Combo set or full blades

I’m z945 4-p with no issues. Some blades have tungsten in the long irons and it really helps. If I was playing a pure blade, I’m definitely going combo set. You’re missing massive forgiveness and launch help that nearly everyone needs in the long irons if you don’t...

I also think it’s quite easy to find oem that makes a long iron substitute that will blend well with your blade irons especially if you’re using same shaft. I don’t need my 3-5 iron to feel exactly like my blades anyways. I use a slightly GI 3-iron that is a go to club...I am useless with a true blade 3i

Hmmm

This thread is great.

I guess I will take recommendations for MP5 combo candidates so I can try and find it piece by piece on the bay.

Since I had my irons extended a week ago, I'm playing way better. I was playing with kiddie clubs. That being said, Ill go to the golf store and try to hit my mp5 against something with more forgiveness.

Have you hit the mp5? its got a little forgiveness I think, tho not much. Im pretty good and looking to improve and compete a bit, so I figured I should get comfortable hitting mp5 long irons. But I'm not trying to shoot myself in the foot as well. If you truly believe pros are the only ones that can hit blade long irons consistently, I guess I am willing to try a taste test at least. I am hitting them alright so far, def room for improvement.

I wish I had a p770 +1 (or similar players cavity type club) to do a comparison video with at home.

My index hovers around 8, and I can hit my baby blade long irons just fine. It's noticeable when I'm having a bad day, but I can't hit my hybrid or 8i on days like that either, so a CB certainly wouldn't help anything haha.

Anyone who says blades are only for pros is a little out of touch, IMO.

Im excited to take mp5s +1 inch out to my local on Tuesday.

Good response though, kinda the way I'm feeling. I have not done index since surgery but I was scratch before, contact not typically my downfall. I have not looked too bad on the monitor and contact feels fine. but I always take that with a grain of salt. Like dj55cornell said score is what matters.

Though maybe my contact was sorta an issue. now that I'm playing proper length, I'm starting to think I was rarely hitting the sweet spot with old clubs! thats the type of improvement I'm seeing. Always played GI's so never noticed, or didn't play enough to be the ho I am today. was never looking to improve equipment, just game.

Played 770's this season, first back, and they were definitely forgiving also, so I got by. but no more just getting by, golfwrx that @*%$.

Committing to being a ho made me a better golfer lol. I think committing to blades will too.

It just depends if you like hitting the 4, 5, 6 iron in blades. Personally I love having blades all the way thru, but to each his own . I use my 4 iron a lot for lunch and specialty shots so I wouldnt get rid of my low number blade irons. GL with the decision

Already made it!

Rocking mp5s for now, maybe will try an mp15/25 4 iron out at some point it I can.

I definitely agree with this! I’ve been about a mid 6 all year and I absolutely love my irons. And yeah the days I don’t are the days I contemplate selling everything and quitting because none of it is working. My driver and putter have been duds lately. I can always count on the irons though! I’m leaning towards reshafting the vapor pro 3i that came with the set to match the c taper 130x in the rest of them. The S300s feel like overcooked spaghetti to me lol

I don’t play blades to look cool. I honestly can’t stand the look of offset and something about a smaller head is SO appealing. As a high ball hitter I don’t need help getting the ball in the air. Especially at the course I play at with wind as a major factor. I need to be able to flight it. I don’t feel comfortable with bigger clubs and maybe I’m an odd one here, but I don’t feel like I hit them as well.

I'm about to get a set of blades. Going full blade 4-PW. I play OG AP2s right now and probably could use the extra support that cavity backs offer, but who cares.

What are you getting?

Update: hitting pure shots with the mp5 feels like nothing. Not "nothing I've ever felt before," or "nothing like it". But nothing. It's like they don't exist, yet the ball just went 200 yards down range. Only the faintest little finger-snapping noise. Very cool.

My round went well, long irons were great. Yes, no room for error. All good, More incentive to approach each shot with purpose.

This is why I play at least as well (or better) with my baby blades. After a couple months with them, I went back to my Z765s and the first few shots felt like I was cheating, but by about halfway through the round I started to get a little lazy with my swing and still ended up with as many mishits as baby blades... although since the distance isn't really punished with the 765's, I would actually wind up in worse shape than had I been playing a blade that would leave me 20yd short on a mishit.

Funny game, this is.

Super lazy with the GI stuff! im focused as $*&@ standing over the ball with the mp5 long iron in my hand. . .

And thats interesting. . . mishits on blades being "more forgiving." It will take me a few days/weeks to wrap my head around that, ill respond then.

  • 2 weeks later...

UPDATE:

Hitting an MP-H5 4 iron now.

I found the distance and forgiveness in that club comes into play far more than the need for perfect accuracy. I use it a lot in 1st/2nd cut or deeper when fairway wood feels suspect. And its literally a perfect complement to the mp5.

keeping 5-pw blade. 5 feels good, and workable.

thanks again for the advice all!

To me, that's what it's all about. Love that feeling and the intensity it brings with every shot.
