Hey Ninja good to hear from you again. Been catching up with you guys. Hate to hear Dan is having serious back problems. Our other buddy Big Mean over on the blade users thread is also having some serious back problems. I had been experiencing some slight back pain and stiffness but nothing compared to Biggie and Dan. Part of mine I figured out today. For some reason trying to get balance I had narrowed my stance and shortened my swing. in other words if you use the physics I was binding myself up. Ended up opening the stance some and keeping the left side open as usual. I am now rotating through the ball with some power. What I was doing was binding myself up and shock loading my lower back. I am also rotating good since I have lost 19 more pounds in the last 6 months. On the club front I am building another set of Machogans this time a set of 1980 Muirfields (same head as my VIPs) with #3 Hogan Apex shafts. Hey man gotta have a good reliable back up set.

Swing Maestro STU it is always good to hear from you. Congratulations on the weight loss too! And yeah 'tis unfortunate about the back injury setbacks to dan360dawan and Biggie. Both of those boys are my baby blade brothers. My homies.

LOL it is good to see you talk physics and your swing. But to be clear, when you narrow your stance you will not gain balance and rather it will make it easier to get pulled off balance and it can put more torque on your back. What you gain with a narrower stance relative to a wider one is the ability to make a wider turn. But it is at the expense of balance. Also a narrower stance will put you slightly farther away from the ball too, relatively speaking.

By widening your stance you will be a little better balanced but your turn will be more limited. And then an open stance limits the backswing while also allowing more follow through in the finish. Also it will likely turn your shot shape to a fade.

I am changing my swing to a little more upright and less knee bend and it is affecting my consistency but overall I think it will help me in the long run. I have better power and I don't hit as many fat shots with it so far.

That is a nice backup set with the Miurfields. I think if I were to play a classic set I would love to play them or Wilson FG-17s.

LOL and of course a WRXer has to have a backup bag as game worthy as his gamers. Here are my #1 and #2 bags:

Nice love the bag tag. Love those Black BBs showing a little rust. Yes my left side is open by design and a baby cut is my stock shot. I call it my version of an anti hook swing. Back when I was younger I had a hook problem. Trust me back in the day I could hit some nasty rope hooks darn near left laterals at times. But basically I have freed myself up to get back and through the ball freer . Feels like a well oiled machine.

The black BBs were newer in that pic. Now the black boron has worn off more overall and completely on all the soles. They are still beautiful but not as clean looking as in the pic.

I like to play a stock fade too. My stance is mostly square, feet maybe slightly open as I go to shorter irons and ball slightly forward at address but not much. It's a more consistent shot shape for me. Draws are harder to control and a hook miss can be the wildest and most unpredictable as compared to my slices. Trevino, Nicklaus, and Montgomery played the same stock fade too so it can't be all that bad.

Good to see the posts coming in, Ninja, Stu, hope all is well!

I've been through a lot of golfing changes in the last 6 months, but lately was suffering from some really bad ball striking. Driver was okay, but I just wasn't hitting any greens. Luckily short game would keep things respectable usually, just not very fun or relaxing always scrambling. I'm focusing on really building a better lower body foundation at setup and tightening my hip turn to prevent the dreaded sway. Seems to be promising although time will tell. Also, I've been playing around with finishing putters, found a good recipe for a plum brown finish. Been considering a custom putter project, but the builder has been slow to respond, so I might just nix it. Lastly, I've been really mesmerized with making an Ireland/Scotland trip, so thinking about that a little. Best Wishes to all the Confessioners!

Those black Miuras are sweet! I made the switch to my "winter" irons, the EZ Forged a couple of weeks ago as I noticed my swing was reacting much better to the XP105 S300 shaft on them as opposed to the KBS Tours on my MP-4s. After a couple of rounds though I started to miss the feel of the blades and put the 4s back in the bag.

I have a confession. There's a very good chance I had an epiphany on Friday. I was doing some stretching and when doing upper body rotation stretches with a stick on my shoulders, I came across a feeling I haven't noticed before. Once you're set in the backswing and start your downswing by rotating your hips, at some point, at your maximum separation between your hips and shoulders, the hips drag your shoulders around and that shoulder rotation, in turn, pulls the club down in, what I think is, the correct way.

We went out yesterday and I had some success in translating that feel to the swing. With only a quick pre-round warm up, I managed to hit nine of the most effortless, flushed, straight iron shots and three or four other very good ones during the round. With temperatures around 6-8ºC and three layers of clothes on, effortless, easy and long are definitely not the adjectives I get to normally use about my swing this time of the year. :) Of course there were some pushes and a couple of terrible hooks but that's just tweaking in comparison to possibly finally figuring out how to actually swing a golf club.

The weather forecasts are showing daily highs of around 4ºC with chances of first snow, and with the DST ending on Sunday, the chances of playing are getting very limited. Thus this revelation might be the building block for my unrealistic expectations for the 2019 season over the long, dark winter months. The good thing is, the feel is so distinct and simple to create, there's no chance of forgetting how it's done.

I am open stanced and basically I cut across the ball from outside in. LOL most folks use alignment sticks to see how straight their divots are . I use them to see if I am cutting across it. Had a guy make a comment on the range one day telling me the divot is supposed to be straight. I told him not for me. If my divot is straight it means I am inside out and a hook will occur. You mentioned Monty. One of the few people that uses the reverse C follow through that has not had back problems. IMHO it is because he has such even tempo and smooth. One of the things that my Old Man warned me about. He had taken a sports medicine course and knew the human body and swing mechanics. When he showed me why it made sense. I never did the reverse C thing even though it was the thing when I was growing up. But basically since my swing is my own homemade swing I have to straighten myself out no one else can do it for me.

Glad to hear from you too---- Hey I have never considered myself a good ball striker but a creative shot maker. My short game has always saved me. 90% of my practice time when I practice is still around the practice green. I have been reading lately on WRX about a certain custom putter maker that has basically been brushing people off and is more interested in making ball markers and such. I do not have a dog in that fight so I am not mentioning names or forming an opinion. But I am sure you can find someone who can and will build you the putter you want. Have fun on your upcoming trip

LOL Mr. "Lefty" (aka MattJ reborn) it is good to have you back again. And yes to confirm, a stable and consistent lower body turn is key to consistent ball striking. Much if this season has been dedicated just to that for me and it is paying off. Ball striking and consistency off the tee has become a strength of mine rather than a weakness. Even my playing buddies have noticed I'm a better ball striker. And yeah it has all been about lower body stability.

If you think about it, the peak velocity of the clubhead in the swing is around 100 mph and this creates a fair amount of centripetal force. And that force is going to "pull" on the body at the arms, where the club is connected to the body. This is an inherent force and thus unbalancing action in the swing as compared to address and so it can be a huge source of inconsistency if one does not properly "counterbalance" it. Furthermore, if you look at all good swings as compared to us hacks, the stability of the lower body is observed. You can have a great swing in terms of mechanics but it can all be for naught if the lower body sways and gets the center of the swing out of position.

Good to have you back and LOL it's good to see your putter ho'in hasn't changed!

The more I play my black BBs the more I love them and don't want to play anything else. Exception of course are my satin BBs but even they have a 10 g heavier shaft (NS Pro 950s vs 850s in the black set) and I lose a few yds with them due to the weight. I have been playing more solo rounds this year where I am grouped with strangers and often my Porn Stars get ogled. Best. Clubs. Ever.

It's so good when you get a swing epiphany and it pays off with a swing improvement. Makes you want to keep playing and keep hitting. And bonus if it is cold weather!

In a few more weeks I fear I will have to put the Porn Stars away for the winter and go exclusive with my Cal Hotties. That said I have some new paint to do a "new and improved" paint fill for the black set and so when I break them out again they will be sexy as f*ck!!!

A divot is supposed to be consistent in shape. And ideally at impact it should start square to the ball. That's it.

I agree with your old man. A reverse C is not good on your back over the long haul. It's good for consistency, but since getting to that position AFTER impact, I can't say it is essential for hitting a cut.

Monty's 'Playing Lessons with a Pro' episode was one of the best shows. He talked about his divots too and said they all cut across the ball...consistently...

It was good to have a swing discussion yesterday. I stopped obsessing about standing too upright and settled on a little more knee bend than I have been working on (but not as much as before) and it worked out. I had a good ball striking day. It seems that some swing talk is good but not too much at once. And anytime I compare notes with you my buddy it always helps me.

I added a TaylorMade M2 Tour 7 iron to replace my 6 iron and I think it will stick. I like the crazy shovel as a hybrid hybrid. It performs like a hybrid but I don't appear to be a grandma when I take it out of my bag for a 160 yard par 3. I already get a truckload of manure every time I pull the 5 hybrid on a par 3. Usually just inspires me, but nonetheless I don't want to invite more. So, I have two 7 irons and 2 60 degree wedges, one is bent to 56. Mad scientist bag. Finalized the order for the custom slant neck putter today too, with Carbon Putters out of Denver. We'll see how it goes...

Anyone ever wrenched their back from golf? Dan, your injuries seem to be more from previous trauma than from swinging a club?

I experimented the last two weeks with a new setup. I think I was S curving my posture too much and now my lower back is a mess. Supposed to play with a bunch of friends on Sunday, but today has me scared I'll have to cancel.

I have mildly tweaked mine but nothing major. I think it is more so from doing things in the swing to overexert the muscles than just a different setup. For example when I learned to use my hips turn to accelerate my shoulders turn, I realized that it can be too much stress on the back. It was then when I realized Jim McClean's "X-factor" was a load of sh*t.

In other news I confess that I am struggling to want to play golf in the PNW rain when it has been such a good summer. It's exacerbated by the fact that I'm loving playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on my Xbox One-S. Can't decide on what to do on this gloomy Saturday.

I think I have it figured out, iliolumbar ligament strain. I was experimenting with more S curve in my posture. Trust me, don't make that mistake. I've been out if commission for two days. Might go get a steroid shot if it doesn't improve.

Makes sense.

From a pure theoretical basis, unaccounting for the nuances of human physiology, turning on a straight spine is the least stressful on the spine itself. The moment you add curves it will add unevenness to the stress along it.

Skipped my tee time this morning. Instantly my back felt better. I think I was tense knowing I shouldn't play. I still have some pain and plan on waiting a few more days before practicing. Reading about iliolumbar syndrome makes me cautious in dealing with the problem.

I just read up on it myself and I seem to have the symptoms. I have only hurt my back twice swinging a golf club. I do not know what else I may have done between bouncing around in Trucks cross country , racing and crashing dirt track cars and hard tailed Harleys who knows?

The season seems to be very much over so now is good time to forget everything about the swing for a while.

I do have a confession, I thought the ferrule on my 8 iron was coming loose, boy was I wrong. It was the head. After the dust settled we started to wonder where the ball went as both of us had our eyes on the club head. To our surprise the ball was almost pin high on the green.

It's good the head flew only 50 yards down a hill, another 15 and it would've been in a water hazard. It was my best (and first) stroke on which I break a club though. :)

Back pain is back, unfortunately.

I've been ho-ing too. I bought some AP2's off of eBay last night. Probably will combo the 6 and 7 into my CB set. Also have a SS cord grip coming to try out.

Mounted a graphite driver shaft into my DH89 which has been a fun experiment. Wrote a little about it over in the putter sub forum.

BIG STU, Ninja, anyone have an opinion about something...

I've been considering building a half inch over standard set. I like heavier swing weight and think it will close the gap to my 5 hybrid better. Is there anything I'm overlooking here?!? That seems like a ridiculous question, but I built one seven iron with an old 6 iron shaft with no slug and I like the feel. I'm thinking of just building the whole set straight in and wherever the swing weight ends up so be it.

Lefty aka MJ the things about SW are that 1) it is only the MOI of the clubhead as it rotates around the wrists but not the total MOI of the swing rotating around the center of the shoulders sockets and 2) it can be changed through length AND weight. So adding length will increase SW but it also increases the total swing MOI which makes the overall swing literally "heavier". This creates a trade off in that your overall SS *may* slow down. Also added length adds a little bit of error at the clubhead relative to shorter length. These are things to consider if you go the route of a 1/2" longer set. You will get SW added for sure but at what *cost*?

Another option you can consider without affecting length (or adding overall weight to the club) is to go with lighter (combined with stiffer) shafts and lighter grips. This will give you added SW without adding total weight and slightly more error. Plus the total club weight will be lighter (while still "feeling" *heavier*) so you should be able to swing it faster.

When I went to lighter and stiffer shafts with my black boron baby blades I got my desired SW feel but the lighter club total weight allowed me to swing faster and I gained a few yards distance over my satin baby blades.

IMHO club length is a variable that should be set based on the golfer's body physique and swing. And then weight and shaft stiffness are set AFTER the length is set up. Meaning, if you like the length of your clubs don't mess with it over SW. You can change SW in better ways than changing the length.

In other news, I'm planning on going to Bandon in late December. I will PM you to see if we can hook up. Also I'm on work sabbatical until February so maybe we can play outside of that too.

Ninja, stay in touch! If we get some nice weather, I might run down to the coast and meet up with you. Although, I doubt we could play together, because getting a twosome on is a pain.

I think I'm going to build a set and see what I think. I've built a bunch of test clubs to play with the idea. I'd like to be able to stand over my 6 iron and know a nice smooth swing will put it out there 165. The way I look at it is what ever stance changes etc. I would have to make, I was making them for a 5 iron before. I can understand not wanting to go longer in the 2 iron or 3 iron, but I play hybrids in those spots and they're so long that I actually play them in shorter lengths so the gaps are good.

I'll build them and report back.

I will definitely keep you posted, Leftissimo.

And also if you can swing those 1/2" longer clubs at the same angular rotation swing speed, then you will also gain some distance.

I still say go for lighter and stiffer shafts at the same time you add length.

Swing changes weren't perfect today, but better than expected. Hit 10 fairways and the 4 I missed resulted in no penalties and were no worse than second cut. I only hit 5 greens which is really what I'm working on, but the misses were closer. Short game was fine. Had 27 putts with 1 3-putt. One ball into a hazard. Nice weather and good company, good to be playing so close to the solstice. Got dark at 4:30.

Edit to add: b.s.ing around WRX thinking about my round and clearly the putting was good, I never get under 30 putts without feeling pretty good over the ball. I think I sank about 80 feet of putts. But, I've been putting better the last year, so I was more impressed that both times I pulled 3 wood it saved me a shot. Put one close on a par 5 for an up and in bird then pumped one on a long par 4 that I missed the drive a little.

That's more proof to me that the full swing work is good. I didn't do anything special just locked in and hit them straight. Good feeling.

Edited to add: Ninja, I see you're getting some heat in the baby blades thread. Good for you, not to rise to the bait. I've been having a similar feeling about a few threads, but it's just not worth it.

A new thing for me this week... I set up my air compressor to blow grips on and off clubs. Considering all the tinkering I've been doing I think it's going to be great. I also experimented with a frequency tester at a friend's home shop the other day. Pretty cool technology. Don't know if it's a placebo thing, but every thing we looked at seemed to be exactly what I would have guessed from actually playing the golf clubs. For instance, a few clubs didn't really frequency match into their iron sets and they were always clubs that I would balloon or couldn't elevate properly out on the golf course. At the range, the second ball is no problem, but on the course it's important that the club respond exactly how you expect on the first try.

LMAO. Lefty I always said I'll keep posting in here until the bitter end as long as there are others. Merry Xmas too, confessions brother.
