Bead Blasted Mizuno Chrome Finish to Satin (Pics and How To)

I know a lot of people prefer a satin finish on their irons rather than chrome and the associated glare. The best result I've seen on this forum is from a five-year-old thread with a guy's MP-64s. I wasn't interested in paying $30 per club or more for a shop to refinish my MP-57s since my irons are new and the shops don't appear to offer what I consider a satin finish. So, I set out to do it myself and found a guy locally with a blasting cabinet who did this for me for a small fee.

 

Here are some pics and specifically what I did in case anyone is looking to do something similar. I'll post more pics of the clubs outdoors once I have them re-shafted. I'm really happy with how these turned out!

• Note that the chrome was not removed, just dulled.
  
• I used 80-grit glass beads at 75 psi. It took 3-4 minutes per club to achieve the desired result.
  
• If you want to keep the grooves and scoring area as is, ScotchBlue exterior painter's tape works well on the face. The exterior version has the highest adhesive and effectively kept the beads from seeping in the edges during blasting.
  
• If the scoring area extends to the topline and you also want to keep that as is, basic electrical tape worked better than the painter's tape.
  
• Similarly, electrical tape worked best for protecting the cavity due to its flexibility.
  
• When taping off the face and cavity, craft scissors will make it a lot easier.

Those Nike's look to have been sanded, not media blasted. They look nice regardless and as a bonus that type of finish doesn't show bag chatter as readily as bright chrome.
