Vegas - Superbowl Weekend

Recommended Posts

Hello folks,

My buds and I are planning a trip to Las Vegas during Super Bowl weekend. This is how we plan on spreading out the golf during the week.

Jan 31st - 36 holes

Feb 1st - 36 holes

Feb 2nd - 36 holes

Feb 3rd (Superbowl) - 18 holes

Feb 4th - 18 holes

I understand that getting 36 in, with limited daylight is going to be a challenge but we are a competent foursome who play fast and not opposed to burning the candle at both ends and starting early to get in 36 holes every day.

Here are our parameters

1) No more that $200 a day per person for golf (including replay rate) AND

2) No more than an hour's drive from the strip

Would you all please point me to some good options given the information above?

Try Paiute, they have 54 holes and do a "golfapalooza" deal that gets you 36 holes and lunch in the middle for like $150-$180 depending on the courses and days.

Whatever you decide on, I would at least book the morning tee times as soon as the tee sheets are available for booking, given the limited daylight and the fact that you will want to get on the course early before too many potentially slow groups get out for the first round.

Paiute would be the starting point.

My next level would be Bear's Best, Rio Secco followed by Boulder Creek, Chimera and Primm Lakes.

A few places do a shotgun start on SB Sunday.. we did Cascata for $350 a couple of years ago and was great fun.

Awesome. So this is how it's shaping up , currently

Day 1 - Paiute Wolf/Snow Mountain

Day 2 - Paiute Wolf/Sun Mountain

Day 3 - Reflection Bay (36)

Day 4- TBD. Bear's Best?

Day 5 - Rio Secco (18)

What do you all think? Is 72 holes at Paiute too much?

I would throw primm in as well 36, good deal, two different Fabio courses.

I love his courses. Underrated.

Is there room for another golfer on your trip? I don't snore.

Not sure if you were asking seriously but we are already a foursome. I would have loved a non-snorer on the trip because my buddy, who I usually share the room with, snores, and I have to use gun range grade ear plugs to get through the night. I also try to ensure that I get to bed 30 minutes before he does.

A couple things to keep in mind...GC AmTour Duel in the Desert is 1/30-2/1 at Paiute and the mornings can be chilly which will help getting the morning rounds in probably quicker than usual, however it can also create frost delays. Primm & Revere would be two turn & burn options to fill the holes. Let us know how it goes.

Thank you. I did not realize that Paiute would be sold out on the first two days of our trip. I will probably move it to Saturday. Do Primm first on Thu or Fri.

I would love to get back to play golf in Vegas someday, but I was just kidding with ya. I haven't been since 2012 when I went with my wife. For the first two days we were there she had a work conference from 8-5, so I played 36 holes each day. Teed off at 7:00 am, 36 holes, lunch, shower, 3 hours of poker, and I was still back in the room before she got back. Great times.

And I know what you mean about rooming with a loud snorer. Couple years ago on my annual buddies' golf trip I got roomed with one of the worst snorers I think I've ever met. I had to buy ear plugs after the first night.

We just got back from the trip and I wanted to come back and provide a short update on what we played and a few condensed thoughts since you all helped out so much with your recommendations.

We flew out from Chicago on Wednesday, Jan 30th at the peak of the polar vortex. It was a miracle that we were able to fly out and get to Vegas 45 minutes ahead of schedule. We were congratulating ourselves on our good luck but in retrospect, I think we used it all up in just getting to Vegas.

Thursday, Jan 31st: We played 36 holes at Reflection Bay. Our first tee time was at 7:30 am. We were the first ones out and we finished in 4 hours flat at 11:30 am. Our next tee time was at 12:30pm. Grabbed some lunch in the club house and got back on to the first tee. We got stuck behind another group on a few holes and managed to get in the second 18 at around 5:00 pm, just as the light was fading. I think the group behind us barely managed to finish. It was touch and go for a while. Damage : $139 + $79 replay + tips

Thoughts : The course was absolutely gorgeous. The greens were fast but fair. The weather stayed in the high 50s to low 60s most of the day, except for the early morning. The staff, especially the starter, were extremely friendly. The guy managing the carts section seemed to have a bit of an attitude that morning and was rude. Maybe he was just having a bad day. This was the first time we played this year with the new flagstick rule. I think the rule is a giant pain in the a** because every player has their own set of preferences for when they want the flag in and when they want it out. I am a single digit hcp and lowest in the group and I honestly don't care if it's in or out. It's just a pain having it in and out multiple times on one hole based on other's preferences. This is going to be a source of serious tilt all year.

Feb 1st, Rio Secco - We were scheduled for 36 holes at this course with the first tee time at 7:30 am. This course is gorgeous as well but an absolute beast. We played from the white tees and still most of us shot the worst scores of the trip. There is just so much trouble all around. We did have our challenges and finished in 4:15. We had to let a single through. Other than that there was nobody behind us for much of the round. Our second tee time was scheduled for 12:50 pm. We knew it would be very touch and go to get close to finishing this round. We started our second round behind another group and had short waits on most holes. We finished 9 holes in two hours and fifteen minutes. We knew at this point that we were not going to finish the back nine. We got to the 12th hole and there were 4 groups waiting on the tee. At this point, we decided to call time of death on the round and instead go gamble. Damage: $150 + $75 replay rate. We had a 25% diamond discount from Caesar's

Feb 2nd: We had 36 holes scheduled at Paiute but the weather took a turn for the worse. They were forecasting snow at the course and we called it off to rest and gamble instead. We went to this off-strip place called Bangkok Thai for a 90-minute massage. Don't let the name of the place fool you. This is a legit massage place at a very reasonable price. The massage is really good with some serious deep tissue stuff which had us all wincing at some point or another. For some reason they put us all in the same room and we got a foursome massage. My buddy, who was on the next table had tears running down his cheeks. He drew a healthy Thai lady for his masseuse. If you want to see a grown man cry, have a healthy Thai lady, who does not believe in using the handle bars, walk all over his back for 30 minutes. This was his first massage and he did not know they he could tell his masseuse to ease up on the pressure. So he suffered in groans. I couldn't stop kept cracking up as I heard his cries. Damage: $100 + tips for the massage and a bunch of bruised egos and bones.

Feb 3rd: We only had 18 holes scheduled on this day at Coyote Springs because of the high scoring shoot-out of a Superbowl we were planning on watching at the Caesar's SB party later that day. This was a 50 mile trek but we had a later tee time at 9:10 am. The course was in the middle of nowhere but was beautiful. The greens were not as fast but had lots of undulation to them. I am guessing they could probably go up a couple of feet or so in green speed before the greens became unplayable. The conditions here were not as good as the other courses but you simply can't find a better $75 course for an early morning weekend round. Overall, an excellent choice. Damage: $75

Feb 4th (Departure day) : We snagged a 7:10 am tee time at TPC Las Vegas. This was hands down the best course we played on the trip. It was pristine. I would say the conditions were pretty close to that of a professional event. Very tough for the average golfer but extremely fair. Good shots were rewarded and bad shots..well. The final two finishing holes were beautiful and tough. I had a good round going till I took 15 on the last two. Most of our group s**t the bed but we still finished in 4:05 and had to let a two-some through at some point. Damage: $99 (I would have paid $200 to play this course.)

Final thoughts: We had planned this trip around SB weekend. I think this is a bit early in the year if you are trying to play 36 holes of golf a day. We had 144 holes planned over 5 days but could only get in about 99 holes. A couple of us, including yours truly were burning the candle at both ends and surviving on 3-4 hours of sleep a night. If you took the under on us getting in 144 holes of golf over 5 days in Las Vegas, you won. We were almost glad that Saturday rained out because I couldn't imagine playing 36 holes on that day even though we had to miss out on Paiute. If you like to golf and gamble and you want to do it on the same trip, I recommend no more than 18 holes a day. It was overall an excellent trip except for all the money we tilted away at the tables. Normally, I only play poker and stay away from the table games but due to time constraints I found the most negative expectation games in the casino to play and forked over a couple of sets of Miura irons. I wouldn't trade this trip for anything though.
