My kids have played from 5-10 yo and I never used cut down clubs. It was either a top flite jr set, Cobra jr, or US Kids. I did order a Flynn shaft for a fairway wood, and use the Cobra jr driver, but never gave them cut down clubs. I am building his next set of irons, but they are not cut down adult. Full assembly myself to spec and weight.

My daughter is 8, I've tried cut down ladies clubs on her driver, hybrid and wedges. The ladies shafts have all been very light similar to Flynn's weighting about 45 to 50 grams. I would say on the driver and hybrid cutting down was not the ideal option and she's using Flynn's shafts which have a lot more flex in them. Also the grip area is much smaller in the Flynn shafts.

As for the wedges i just cut down some older cleveland ladies rotex 2.0 with 50 gram shafts and they seem fine but its only been a few days. I'm thinking they will be ok in the wedges since Cleveland just launched new junior wedges and they put steel KBS 70 for 8-9 year old clubs and read that they are using the same heads.

I think in the Woods, I would use Flynn for irons and wedges I'm on the fence if you can find 50 gram shafts will see in the next few weeks. For me its been a cheap experiment since you can find used ladies clubs for very cheap online and then cut at home. If it doesn't work you order a shaft which I would have had to anyway.

My daughter is 10 and I have bought a driver and 3 wood with a ladies flex before and cut them down to what US kids says is the appropriate length. She had no problem hitting either of the two clubs and still uses the 3 wood. When you cut down the shaft it changes the swing weight and stiffens the shaft so you need to be aware of this. My daughter's coach had me add some lead tape to the bottom of her driver to give the club a little more weight. In a perfect world, you would get a junior shaft put in the clubs until the child swings the club fast enough to have a stronger flex shaft. You can get the junior shafts from Flynn golf and he will even put the adapter on for you before he ships it. It does add to the cost of the club you are purchasing so that is why some folks just cut the club down.

Interesting, I didnt know about the Junior Cleveland Wedges. I was waiting on the new USKG Tour Series TS3. Looks like another option to consider now. From your comments above on headweight being same as adults and shaft in the 70 range, it sounds like they may be heavier than US Kids (I dont think they advertise the headweights or shaft specs on their current lines, only "20% less than adults") and the flynn setups. However, Cleveland recommended wedge length for 8-9 year olds is the same as the US Kids 51" series length..28.5". Here is link to Cleveland junior wedges.

I looked at the Cleveland junior set a while ago. I was unimpressed. They do not look like a serious set of clubs. At least with USKG TS, you can get 5,6,7,8,9,PW and SW clubs.

There was a "Junior driver review" earlier on this board that mentions the Cleveland CG Black driver for Juniors...that driver does look good to me and I would not hesitate to have my junior try it out if he had the chance.

Note: My personal clubs are Cleveland.

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

Agree, but I was referring to the wedges only (check out link , they have same models as adults), not the iron set. I just talked to Cleveland Golf and they confirmed the heads in the junior wedges are the same as the adult models, just with a different junior shaft and grip. I was momentarily intrigued because I love Cleveland wedges myself.

My bad, I didn't catch the wedges part. My wedges are Cleveland P and SW. Nothing special though as they came with the set (back in 2003 or 2004).

Just a quick update, my daughter took her new cut down ladies Cleveland 588 CB Rotex 2.0 out this weekend. The heads are heavier and bigger, the shaft stiffer but weight was not an issue. That being said, I think in the wedges the extra head weight actually helps her to control the club and not swing as hard on short shots. She loves the wedges and feels very confident, I think they will be just fine. I felt her distance we solid didn't lose any distance I would say she maybe hits these new wedges further than her series 2 flynn wedges.

Was a pretty inexpensive try and I'm going to keep the ladies shafts cut down in them.

What ladies shaft did you have in there?

When my son was younger, I would buy some used senior flex irons and cut them down. Typically I would try to make them 1/2" to 1" longer than USKG clubs for his size. Then I would grip them with light ladies size grips or just noir grips. Swing weight will be off, but length and lie are way more important. I don't think junior size clubs have typical swing weights anyway. They probably weigh in the A's or low B's because they are so short.

I know this is an older thread and searching has turned up nothing for me so far. So my question is what is the thought on cutting down longer us kids clubs?

A little about my son... he is 7 and a lefty. He is currently playing a set of UL 51's and he is an intermediate player as far as skill. Has some low 40 rounds but also can shoot a 50 pretty easily (his adhd makes some days really tough). His short game is his strength so I'm looking to upgrade his longer clubs. I've tried a few adult clubs for him but we keep going back to his UL driver because while shorter is much more consistent down the middle or at least in the fairway. The reason I pose the question is that there are quite a few longer TS3 drivers and fairway woods that I have seen out there and it has me thinking that might be a better option then a Flynn shaft and an adult head or even a ladies shaft(and lighter on my wallet). I have not measured his swing speed either but he gets his UL driver out there about 125 and when he got around on one of the adult heads that I cut down it was about 135 for reference. Hope that info helps and thanks for any responses. This forum has been a great resource for us so thanks for taking the time to put this stuff on here.

He is 7. Stick with US Kids Clubs. An adult head with a Flynn shaft will cause weighting issues which can cause poor swing mechanics. Cutting down clubs can cause the same issues. Just get him a club that fits off the shelf.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Agree with HH above that you should just stick with USKids at least for iron set.

How tall is your junior? What's his driver swing speed? This will help determine the iron set (Tour Series vs UltraLight).

From reading these threads, many have gone to OEM heads including us. My junior is 7O (going on 8YO in couple months), 51.5" tall and has a driver swing speed in low 60's. We played a USKG TS51 driver at age 6 into 7YO. In Spring 2018, we went to a Flynn shaft with adult Cobra Fly-Z+ head (without weight installed it weighed 187g at the head). He hit it well all summer and even had some super long drives. However, I felt the Flynn JR2 shaft was just too whippy for that head. We now are using a Cobra BioCell Junior driver with Cobra junior shaft at 39" (he chokes down to about 37" on this club).

Having said all of that, the USKG drivers had a bad rap (from what I have read) from some past years. The new TS3 drivers are getting good/great feedback although we have never swung one. The entire process can be expensive. For us, we buy nearly everything used off of eBay (our TS51 set and Cobra drivers/shafts except Flynn all from there). Keep your eyes open and you can find some great deals.

Thanks for the replies and we may end up sticking with the us kids driver as I think that the accuracy is more important than the distance at this point. My thought is that if we can have more distance with the same accuracy and not sacrifice mechanics as well it would be a win. As far as irons go I have no plans change out of the ul's as they seem to fit him fine but I will be adding a few more clubs to plug gaps.

He is 51" and I took him today to a simulator and his swing speed is high 50's to touching 60 after about ten drives. So armed with that info would cutting a longer us kids TS fairway or driver be a big mistake? (are the clubs that much heavier) That is just one option I'm considering as I also have a sldr head with the weight removed that weighs about 185g that I thought about putting a Flynn shaft in as well. Again being a lefty there is not a ton of used stuff out there at his size. I would like to try and make changes over the winter and give him time to get used to any changes that we make.

I'd just stick with your current UL51" driver for now. Work on swing speed this winter and maybe then look at OEM or TS3-51 driver in spring. Here are the technical specs from 2014. These specs do not include the new model TS3 for Tour Series as this document is for the prior generation Tour Series. I believe the UL's are the same: http://www.uskidsgolf.com/sites/uskidsgolf.com/files/USKG-2014-TechnicalSpecs.pdf

TS3 for slower swings is probably the best driver out there. My daughter who is 8 hit it at worlds just as far as her Ping OEM if we didn't have so much invested I'd probably go Ts3. Ping Prodi-G is another option but unsure of the weight of that one. Us kids gets a bad rap for being dead but I would bet you could take the ts3 vs most of the kids on here and some and it would out preform it. TS3 as a lot of modern tech in it. Great driver if your kid has the swing speed to handle the tour series.

The kid my son played with in most of the fall us kids events in our area got a TS3 and while it took him some time to get used to, once he did he could fly the ball around 150. It did not seem dead and was a huge improvement over his ul driver. He certainly has more swing speed than my son but the driver definitely helped him and is the reason I’m considering one.

Back when I was ~~mutilating~~, I mean cutting down some adult shafts for my son, I calculated the swing weight for his 54" Flynns and cut down adult Cobra woods by using excel sheet and extending the chart from the following link.

[https://tutelman.com/golf/design/swingwt4.php](https://www.tutelman.com/golf/design/swingwt4.php "https://tutelman.com/golf/design/swingwt4.php")

Junior clubs are so light, that they drop off well beyond the "A" swing weight, so I simply extended the chart using lower case letters. It will give a rough visual as to how the adult cut down clubs will compare to the junior clubs in a set. lynpxk5arz9s.png

We went to tour series at age 6 (51 series) and adult heads at pretty much 9. But we had cobra junior driver at end of age 6 going on 7. Depends on height and strength of the kid. IMO tour series is better than any GI iron. If you are looking at GI heads I would wait until they can hit player profile clubs (forged if possible so you can flatten at least 3*).
