Srixon Z545/565 Alternative...

I think you made the right decision (on 545’s anyways, time will tell if the S300’s are right for you). I was at my course range today with my 790’s with DG 105’s and 565’s with CTL’s. Man my 565’s with the CTL’s are just so smooth and I was consistently hitting it 5 yards further with slightly better dispersion than the 790’s. Just a mid-high penetration flight! Love the looks of the 790’s but slightly better feel and performance of the 565’s. I’m sure you’ll like the 545’s, srixon makes great irons.

I play 545 as my regular set during the season, and play a set of the Adams CB3 in the satin finish in the off season. I love them, I've owned a couple sets (did the old sell one set, regret it, buy another, sell them, regret it...). They have great feel and sound, similar shape, and comparable turf interaction. The lofts are stronger than traditional, but not as strong as the 545 (I think 45* CB3 pw versus 44* 545 pw), they usually end up being about a half a club to a couple yards shorter than the 545s. The one thing I sometimes love, sometimes hate about the CB3s is that they only want to hit the ball straight, whereas I can work the 545s in both directions when I'm hitting them well. It's really nice this time of the year on windy days when I start hitting a lot of 3/4 swing knockdowns to keep it lower, but sucks when I want to hit a big sweeping hook when I'm blocked behind a tree. I tend to hit a lot of "shots" during a round of golf, probably to a fault. The CB3s are easier to flight down though, but that might be a product of the shafts - I have Recoil 110 F5 soft stepped twice in the 545, and Recoil 110 Prototype F4 straight in the CB3. The Prototype feel much more "stout"/ low-launching, to me.

The dark CB3s are a nice look to begin with. But, I really like that standing over the satins, they resemble the 545s I'm used to looking down at. And, IMO, I feel like the satins have a slightly better feel than the black finish - they feel slightly less firm than the black ones. It feels like I'm playing near twin iron sets, and extending the life of my favorites (the 545s) for that much longer only playing them April through October. I paid less than $150 for the satins on eBay on a Buy-it-Now listing that had a best offer option, from maybe Global Golf? Or a similar type seller. They were listed in excellent condition, and they looked like they had shop wear and two of the irons had been hit a couple times. I see the same generic listing from the same seller from time to time when I'm searching for a satin 3 & 4 iron and they are usually well below $200. The black CB3s seem to be all over the place price-wise, but the most realistically priced sets are in the $150 - $300 range, depending on condition and shafts.

Maybe you should make the CB3s your regular set & sell me the 545s with the Recoils :) :)

Well I pulled the trigger. Hopefully they work out....

Your reply was so interesting to me... the S300s felt dead to me as well (years ago). Maybe this time around with a different swing (I'm sure my swing has changed/evolved over the years) - I will like them. I'm hopeful the dispersion is better as I did get some wild hooks with the Recoils (not entirely the shafts fault, I know).

Another reason I went to Recoils is elbow issues. I'm definitely thinking I'm going to put Prosoft Inserts into these shafts. I've heard nothing but good things and they are a dirt cheap investment.

Also, I'm thinking I want to go ALL IN with the v-sole and get some RTX 3 wedges (50,54,58) to complete the set. I'd prefer a 545 gap wedge but very hard to find.

Thanks again...

I hope the shafts work out for you. I really don't know why the shaft fells better this time around. Surely my swing is much better than way back then, but I also had a whole lot more power before. Perhaps it's really more the better rhythm is making all the difference. I have heard great things about the Prosoft insert for people with elbow issues. Luckily I don't have any first hand experience though. I wouldn't bother with 545 gap wedge. Specialized wedge are almost always better than the ones come with a set.

Maybe you should make the CB3s your regular set & sell me the 545s with the Recoils :) :)
