What clubs in the last 15 years qualify as "unicorns"?

Just for fun, two questions

1. When someone says unicorn, what do you think it should mean?
   
2. What are your favourite unicorns?

Since 2005, the only club I can think of that is still revered to this day is the 905R. Don't get me wrong, I love the R510TP (in fact I have one myself) but that was made in 2003 (I think), not 2005 (you said last 15 years, not last 17).

 

To me, a unicorn is a club that is quite talked about, but rarely seen like a R500 DF or a Titeist 970 FW or a Superquad 282.

Adams CMBs, had a cult following, many still claim them to be the best set of irons ever made (including myself), yet you never find them in play on the course. A rare sighting is that CMB unicorn.

Second for the CMB;s - I have a set, but they have been very very very well used - the chrome has come off in quite a few places! :)

1. I don't think a unicorn needs to be super rare, but certainly something you may only see in bag or two here or there and not something as common as the AP2 line, as an example nothing against the AP2s, big fan of the 714s myself.

Also something that people are by and large in agreement with. Consensus might be the most unicorny requirement on here actually. Like on Top Gear, where they only agree they all like about 3 or 4 cars.

From a technology perspective, the Cobra King LTD. Although it ultimately didn't work best for me, nothing has been made before or since that has such a low center of gravity as well as a high MOI.

 

A few drivers have been able to get the COG down to the neutral axis but none have had anywhere near the forgiveness level the Cobra achieved.

 

For Cobra it was kind of a "how do we improve from here? " club.

I have two definitions:

 

Something that combines two characteristics that are almost impossible to see together ie low spin and high MOI (King LTD driver)

 

Something that remains great, even while release after release after release tries to get you to replace it (G25 fairways)

Not a clubhead but for me the C-taper shaft provided some freakishly long iron shots....not suppose to be but high launch very low spin and just flew! Hard on the elbows though

Adams BTY fairways were the GOAT .

 

The Adams tour only version of the A3 (square driver) was one of the only open faced square drivers ever and was pretty revered

 

To be a unicorn it has to be fairly rare and unique.

 

The Titleist 907D4 might be another

Taylormade R 510 DF: Most have moved on but affection abounds for this driver.

 

Titleist 681 T stamp: perhaps the most collectible and desired MB of last 20 years and commands lots of money.

Here are WRX, Unicorns are ALWAYS rare stock, hence the name. They aren't qualities, but rather actual clubs or equipment. Most of them have to do with Robopti, before the grand split.

 

Some examples are the HiBore 2 wood, and the Aldila Cinnamon. Not sure why people are suggesting items that are commercially available...

Legacy Black, especially a new set now is a unicorn for sure. I would say the hardest set of irons to find these days would be Epon Copper 302s. Best looking irons I've ever seen.
