Spieth Facing Sanctions?

I like when they were throwing around the idea of having to play in every tournament at least once over a 5 year period but the big guys were having nothing to do with that idea. They'd actually have to tee it up when they didn't feel like playing once in a while, how hard would that be to overcome? I don't remember who it was just recently complaining about the travel but I really feel bad for him too. All those traveling salesmen out there scratching out a living back in business class don't have nearly the struggles of these poor tour pros.

 

yea but you cant keep the non profit ( for the tour) and contractor status for all the players at some point if you start dictating their schedules.... Eventually they are employees and it isnt "prize" money anymore... Think NFL MLB... all contracted gauranteed salary players with bonus options... and their schedules are dictated to them ..

 

I'm not sure how it is different than what Spieth is going through now...

 

There were two options on the table. 1. They were going to set it up so that there was a WGC event about once a month and they would rotate which sites got the WGC event so most of the events would have a strong field at least once a year. That didn't sit well with the sponsors because most of them have an interest in the city that they choose to sponsor an event it.

 

2. Much like there is set up now there were going to be standards set for players to play in a certain amount of events and a certain amount of new events every year. Now it's something like you had to play in at least one or two new events per year and that won out over you had to play in a much higher amount of events that you haven't played in during the last 5 years essentially meaning you had to play in every event at least once over the course of five years. That lost out because the big guys weren't going to play in the dinky events.

 

What ended up happening is what we have now. To keep your status you have to play in a small amount of new events.

 

other than me mistakenly thinking they had a players " union" ( they do have a group)for bargaining , how does the reality you describe differ from what i said ???? I literally said the player arent going to allow their schedules to be dictated ... same same . no ? They have to play a minimum number, but they arent being handed out schedules

 

We're actually both kind of right but I never said the PGA Tour would just hand out a schedule. Right now one of the things you can do to comply with the minimum starts requirement is add an event you haven't played in during the last four years. They were talking about making that number six events so essentially telling the guys they would have to play in every tournament over the course of five years but it didn't happen and stayed at 1.

 

The committee you're pointing out isn't even close to a union or bargaining group. They also have a players rules committee that basically tells the Tour what they're going to do. If you follow news you might remember that it was a pretty big discussion about whether or not the players should unionize when Vijay got the boot for using the deer antler spray.

 

I agree that what you’re saying is what is happening. But that’s never been what I was replying to. I replied to the idea that the tour would tell players what events to play. Even if stretched out for 5 years and said you have to play each event once. That’s still not going to ( and didn’t ) fly.

 

No I do not sit in on their meetings. So it’s only an educated guess. But I’d bet anything pga policy is shaped by the players groups. That was my point. Official protest or closed door pushback. Same same.

 

No I don’t follow the news, save for here. But I’d bet the players groups have enough pull as is to not want or need the divisivness of adding an actual union.

Mayakoba is a tournament that I like watching anyway. Even cooler now that Spieth is there. I’m glad he got in trouble lol.

Poulter’s fine for not playing enough events last year was playing in this week’s Tournament of Champions and having to spend a day courting Wyndham guests at his home which included golf and seeing his cars. Interesting fine.
