Big Bertha Alpha 816 Fairway - Good Club? Still playing it?

How many of you still play the 816 Alpha fairway?

I have a 16 degree 816 Alpha fairway that I picked up while back at a good deal. I did not like club but it was due to the Rogue stiff shaft which felt whippy compared to the V2 86 stiff I played for years in a Diablo Octane Tour.

I plan to try a Diamana 80 gram WB stiff out as I play 70 gram WB stiff (same vintage) in my driver and I cannot seem to part with that shaft.

Just put one back in the bag as it seemed to be the only decent 3W I could hit off the deck reasonably consistent. Tested it against the TS2/3 fairways yesterday and it held it's own. I like the flight of the 816 a little better and I know it's great off the tee, which is where I didn't get a chance to test the TS2/3's because of time.

Also have the 18* 815 hybrid that I don't think will ever leave the bag. It's been by far the longest tenured club in any bag I've had.

I have the 14 degree with Black tie X-flex 70gm shaft.

Like it a lot, when its set to 14 degrees with the heavy weight forward its basically a 2nd driver. I do feel a more in control then a driver though, I think cause of shorter shaft and heavier swing weight

I've just started to play it at 15 degrees with the heavy weight at the back to see how forgiving it can be - having 2 clubs that hit essentially the same distance is kinda pointless...

I currently play an X2Hot pro 15 degree.

Have any of you ever compared/tried out the 816 against the X2Hot pro?

Just curious.

I had the X2Hot pro and the 816 beat it in distance. I think the 816 appears smaller in size and sits a little more square, not sure if it is or not. Also like the adjustability option on the 816, definitely can fit more people with the weight options based on what you're looking for from your FW. YMMV

Still have, and play, the 3 & 5 wood. I have gamed some good fairway woods, but these are some of the best. I won't be changing them anytime soon.

I didn't get along with the 816. The clean matte look is great, but I think I just prefer cleaner look of an adapter-free hosel on my fairway woods. Performance on good strikes was on par with other top Callaway models for me, but I just prefer the xr16/x2hot.

Just recently purchased the 816 (rogue r-flex) from Callaway prepared. Great looking club and more forgiving than I expected. Seems easier to turn over than others I've had.

Very user friendly and quite forgiving.

It’s rare to find a fairway wood you can get airborne easily from the deck and work both ways.

Agree. Particularly for fairways. I think I have about 3 of them hanging around is various clubs/states.

I have the 5 wood and really like it. It’s currently in a battle against a ‘17 M1 5 wood. I like the shape and look of the M1 better, but I hit the 816 better off the deck. But to answer your question, it’s just as good as anything out there, and if you’re looking for a smaller 3 wood head than most of the current offerings, the 16* is the ticket.

I have 2 bags and have an 816 in 14* and 16*.

I game the 14* with a Kurokage TiNi 50 Stiff in my main bag ( my driver SS is only 96 these days ) and that light shaft works very well off the tee and turf. The 14 sounds much more muted at impact compared to my 16 , with the same shaft.

The Cally 815 was too shallow of a face for me.

I bought an Epic 15* but did not like the sound.

Also had a 2016 M2 but still preferred my 816.

Anyone have a source for additional weights for the 816 ?

I play the big brothers, the 815 Alpha 14* set to 16* and the 18* set to 20*. I''ve switched the heavier weights to the back of the sole and get good launch... the 665 shaft (see below) is one of the more aggressive FW shafts I have tried.

The 816 Alpha is supposed to be a bit more forgiving (from reviews), so I suspect it works fine - as long as you tune it up correctly for your swing.

  • 4 weeks later...

I just started similar post with

Just wondering who is still gaming Cally 816 Alpha Woods. If so what have you compared to and or what have you moved in to. Especially looking at off deck comments.

Myself I have 816 14 turned to 16D. Also wanted to try weight forward but weather now getting cold. I have PX red 6.0.
