P790 AW vs Specialty

byrne092

Recommended Posts

I have browsed a few topics that discuss this, but was hoping to hear if someone has experience first hand. Just got a set of P790s, 4-PW and I'm trying to decide on a GW. Only concern is if i might have gapping issues if i go with, say, an SM6 50.8, as opposed to the AW. I know I would gain a little forgiveness with the set wedge, but is the P790 face hot enough where the SM6 might fall short?

The 50.8 would go with my SM6 54.14 and 58.12 which i currently have.

Probably just going to pull the trigger on one or the other in the next couple days

Thanks!

I would say it depends on what you typically use your AW for. If it's mostly for full shots it might be best to match the rest of your set.

I went with a P790 AW since I only use it for full swing or pitch shots. I don't really like the feel of the P790 around the green, but I only chip with my 54 or 58. I don't find the face hot, but with the increased forgiveness of the P790 you might hit it consistently farther than a SM6 of the same loft.

Correct answer right here. I use my gap wedge (AW, whatever) for mostly full swings and thereofre have it matching to my set. That, and I cannot hit a blade 50* wedge with any degree of confidence. I like a little more forgiveness in that club so the set wedge was the winner for me, albeit a pain in the a** to locate.

It all matters as the one poster stated what you use it for, if only full shots that match it up. If you want versatility then you might want to do a different one.

When I played the P790 4-AW Modus 130S, the AW always gave me different yardages on what I felt as pure shots causing me angst. So I dropped the AW and added a Mizuno S18 50 and got back to being reliable from a 110-115 yardage number I needed to get the ball close. Chipping and half shots were ok with the P AW, just that occasional over compressed ball or speedier foam that showed up from time to time that caused the lost of confidence...

I didn’t care for the 790 AW so I’d go a different route and this is coming from someone that still loves my 50* UW ping g25 with my g25 iron set.

I'd go a different way, but that is because I'm a massive fan boy for the Ping Glide wedges. Very forgiving but with a compact blade wedge look at address. That extra forgiveness offers a lot of ballspeed protection on misshits giving real consistent yardages.for me it offers the best of both worlds.

Thanks for all the feedback! I think I’m going to go with the sm6 to match my other two. If anything, it will be an inexpensive test compared to buying the AW. I’m pretty confident with my wedge game right now so hopefully it blends in nicely.

On that note; I will take the advice given and at least look into other wedge options moving forward. I just get kind of tunnel vision with the vokeys because I’ve played them for so long.

I don't have the p790's......... but I did not buy a matching gap wedge with my last set of irons. I went with a 50 MD4 for the versatility and I can honestly say it's paid off so far. I can hit full, partial, knock downs, and chips around the green.

I have a matching gap wedge with my z565's and it usually only wants to do one thing. And that's go high and far.

I have played the 790s all season. I experimented with the 790 gap wedge and didn't think it was as versatile as a "real" wedge. I tried to go with 50,54,58 in vokey sm7s but found that my gap between pw and 50 was too big. I settled on the 48, 52 (bent to 53) and 58 in the SM7s. I am very comfortable with the gaps in this setup and have been very accurate with the higher bounce F grind vokeys in the 48 and 52.

I thought about that too. I’ve been trying to get my distances figured out now that I’ve had them a week and just using an old GW for now. I think that’s a valid point as I have gained some distance. Thanks for the input.

I have the matching P790 AW and it can do all that too and then some. Gaps are just fine as well. Guess it’s just what someone wants to play with and can talk themselves into using one way or the other.

I didn’t care for the 790 AW so I got mine 3-pw and got a MG 50*. Much better feeling imo

... As others have said there are several reasons to pick one over the other. I have 6* gaps between my wedges and have for over 30 years so I am very comfortable with those gaps. I bent my P790 pw to 46* and have Vokey's in 52 and 58.

Lw=85

Sw=105

Pw=125

... For me at least the Pw is more explosive than my old Vokey Pw and once I began hitting more 3/4 shots with it, gapping fell into place. I feel like anything above 46* precision is necessary and while I have never experienced phantom fliers, the harder you hit P790 wedges the farther they fly, certainly farther than a corresponding Vokey type wedge. I imagine if your gapping is closer and especially of you hit your Sw less than 100 yds the P790 Aw could be a possible option.

I played p790s this past summer and they were so hot that I went with a 5-AW, basically just treating them like 4-PW. I didn't want to reorganize my wedges and long clubs and that's the setup that fit my gaps best.

Like others have said I found the AW inconsistent. That was kind of a running theme starting with the 7 iron so I've since ditched the p790s. They're great for a combo set to serve as long irons but I think you're making the right choice by going with a separate wedge.
