Rickie Fowler's new Cobra King F9 Speedback driver

Recommended Posts

Is the IZ shaft something new for Fowler or did he play that last year?

Oh great. Bulging toe and another pointy triangular butt and more weird ridges on th top. A shape only it’s designer could love.

Gross. Not a fan. . I guess the LTD gets another season or two.

LOL! I better edit this....I still think it’s ugly but the performance is great and it sounds great. I’m getting one.

The IZ is definitely new. I have an 80 Stiff in my fairway and it’s fantastic. This driver looks great minus the yellow. Good thing two different colors are coming to retail.

Looks fast.. Definitely pulling some inspiration from the F1 world. Even the font has the Nascar/ Racing inspired look.

I really just wish the OEM's would stop slapping marketing jargon on every piece of visible "tech" on a clubhead... Speedback, CNC Milled, F9 Speed Tuned, MyFly, 360Aero, Ultralite Carbon Wrap. COME ON

I don't mind the headshape. It kind of reminds me of the old R9 Superdeep with that triangular shape and the way the yellow is wrapped around the back. If it had a taller face, I would be a lot more interested. Didn't care much for the way the F8 looked at address, and aside from a tweak in head shape, I would imagine this will be similar. But, I will give it a fair shake and get it in hand before I say that I am not interested. It does have some good things going for it.

in my humble uneducated opinion, i feel this one will be a miss for cobra. i am not sure i understand why companies keep throwing their hat in the aerodynamics ring. i dont think it can be measured in real life. I dont care if the head is 300 times more aerodynamic. what can that translate to in real numbers??

got some new irons in the bag there? Possibly F9 long irons? or just for marketing purposes?

This driver looks sick. How's that AD IZ shaft?

Looks like he has 18 clubs in there. Likely just hitting 4 of the new irons for marketing and a commercial or something.

I agree completely. It's also E9 technology, not F9. That's been around since the Bio Cell days. With TM bragging about twist face, I think they decided this year to step up the recognition of their E9 face from years past.

Because they don’t have a choice. There isn’t much left. Any improvement on performance at this stage is minuscule at best. OEMs are grasping at anything they can improve to make it “better” than the previous generation.

I dont disagree with you there. this just seems like a step backwards and has already been done. A number of times. but again, i guess that is just the industry, rename and rebrand old tech.

  • 2 months later...

If he’s at 43.5”, why not extra weights on the bottom ?

I noticed that too. This might seem ridiculous, but when those pics were shot I’m betting the heavier weights didn’t exist yet.

Cobra actually just added the heavier weights to their inventory a few days ago. Hotmelt was probably the only way to adjust it in October.

Hotmelt?

Hotmelt..and lot's of it...If it's setup like some of his previous drivers , the

hotmelt is forward center , 1/2 on the crown , 1/2 low , against the face..

He gave an interview once stating that weight added in the rear of the head

had negative feel to how the head released thru impact . Felt like he was

" dragging dead weight " thru the hitting zone..

Looks like he is using all the spin killing tricks in the book....

Higher lofted head , adjusted lower / opening the face angle . Tip stiff

and short shaft... Heavy weight in the back would add launch and spin....

It actually means a lot. After going through a half dozen iterations of my driver design to improve aerodynamics, it resulted in an increase of 1-2 MPH in club head speed.

With variances in spin, 1 mph in club head speed results in 3-5 yards extra distance.

While it’s very buzz word right now, there is legitimate scientific data to back it up. The faster your swing speed, the more it can positively affect your potential distance, and since COR is maxed, aerodynamics is then next barrier to over come, and cobra has something special with the F9.
