What if Tiger's Back?

If he wins he wins and I think ratings will be good. But as far as the same effect as back in the late 90's early 00's, no. He was younger then, in his 20's and younger kids relate to someone like that. My oldest son, born in 1987, began playing golf partly because of Tiger and when we'd go to the range he'd swing hard and say "I AM Tiger Woods" like one of his commercials from the time. I don't think he would inspire younger kids today like he did then. He's in his 40's and his oldest kid is a middle schooler now I think. It'll be great for his long time fans though.

I'm guessing you didn't see the last hole of the 2018 Tour Championship. Pretty silly to ask what 'effect' a competitive Tiger has on the game. If he's able to stay healthy, 2019 should be good for both Tiger and everyone who wants a piece of him.

I absolutely did and it was quite a scene. But to expect that kind of reaction every time he wins now probably isn't realistic, unless he's coming down 18 with a lead in a major, which he probably will. But in terms of a general, overall effect like the OP was referring to then I would still say no.

Welcome to another action-packed episode of Post Breakdown by Ferguson.

Love him?

He’s a fantastic golfer. He is a true living legend. Forget the guy – he plays golf like no other - what’s not to love?

Hate him?

Too strong of a word.

It doesn't really matter.

Is does matter or you would not have started this thread.

But what if Tiger Woods is finally back and able to be a threat to win multiple times on tour?

He is back and will be a threat. Look at the stats and the win in 2018.

What does that do for the sport?

It does nothing but fuel the sport of golf. It will bring yet another generation of young players to the game with real dreams and real aspirations about becoming great golfers – in a time when a good number of kids want to sit around, play video games and smoke drugs.

What does that do for the ratings?

46-52% increase across the board. Unfortunately it keeps Rosaforte and Chamblee in jobs.

We all know the impact he had in the late 90s and 2000s, but could he have a similar effect again?

Impact you say? Did you see the crowds this year? They were bloated, the numbers, not just the people.

It won't transform the game because he already did that.

But anytime he's in contention there will obviously be very high ratings.

If he's in the final group of a major you will probably see some TVs exploding from excessive rating syndrome.

The concern should be what happens when he retires in a few years. Who's going to take over the spotlight or will it be the smorgasbord (DJ, Day, Rose, Spieth, Brooks, JT, Rickie, Bryson) that take brief turns at #1?

Personally, I think it has the potential to be absolutely fantastic for the sport. It allows for a better "passing of the mantle" to the next generation. For example, I really think it adds it adds a little something to extra to BK's last major win that he stayed cool and held-off a hard-charging Tiger.

Plus, just imagine if Tiger is able to win a a major and is playing well enough to have an actual rivalry that isn't one-sided? You have the young-gun or guns versus a resurgent all-time champ adding to golf history. Just look at what happened at the Tour championship (which no none normally cares too much about). It would be absolutely explosive for golf!

That got me pumped up!

Yep, it looks obvious what it will do for the sport and the ratings. I have never seen anything like that at a US tournament, only the British Open.

True golf fans care naught for television ratings. Of what possible consequence are ratings unless you are a direct beneficiary of brand marketing spend? Golf is not a rock and roll concert for the mindless fanatics to idolize a single player.

No, no. True golf fans wish to see equitable competition on proper golf courses. And fine sportsmanship. Ratings be damned. It's the pursuit of ratings that has turned our beloved and once respectable game into a spectacle. True golf fans want less patronage, not more. Do you follow, my good man?

The title of this post should be "What about Tiger's back?"
