Apple watch 4 vs Garmin s20 etc.

Recommended Posts

Hey!

I am in the mood to try a gps-watch and retire my rangefinder. I am looking for distance front/back/center of green and to hazards.

My question is, will I get accurate distances with golfshot/grit/hole19 etc for both green and hazards or should I buy a garmin to get that? A apple watch has other benefits as you all know so I am leaning that way.

Sorry for language, I am swedish.

I've been using a Watch 3 this year, after using a Garmin Approach X40 for two years.

The apple watch is great because it has a bunch of other functions (message notifications without constantly checking the phone, health/heart tracking stuff, etc.). But one frustrating thing, compared to the Garmin, is that it constantly turns off to preserve battery (as does the phone it's linked to). In most situations, that's not a big deal -- looking at it wakes it back up in less than a second. But the GPS usually takes a few seconds to adjust to its current location, so I find myself often looking at the watch, waiting for the GPS to normalize (basically, the distances jump around for a while, until it has a good lock on your location), and twisting the crown to keep it from going to sleep again.

With a Garmin, you have the GPS reading ready the second you need it, at the expense of not having many non-GPS functions.

I see, great to hear. I read in a older post that you could change settings in the apps so they don’t close down and need to be woken up again, but that is maybe anorher issue? What app do you use?

Garmin Vivoactive 3 has been on my wrist since fathers day this year. Good blend of fitness with golf functions. Very accurate on the course. Had a Garmin x40 which had a minor amount more of golf function but the larger vivoactive 3 is easier to read and use.

I read alot about problems with the golf app on the VA3, have garmin fixed the issues?

An interesting option is the game golf pro if they would release the yardage tracker as a apple watch app.

The only problem with the golf app on the VA3 that I've found (and reported to Garmin) is that "pausing" a round corrupts the data file for that round. All this means is that if you use the watch for score tracking the file is lost. I just don't pause anymore and I have no idea if they fixed it yet. The autoshot is not as functional as my x40 but I really don't use that. Another minor bug is that sometimes it doesn't offer to have you enter a score after the first hole but works thereafter. But the important stuff like yardage, accuracy, distance to hazards, entering scores and putts it works great. Battery is easily good enough for 36 holes. Hope this helps.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have the Apple Watch and have tried to use game book for tracking stats, yardages and scores but it definitely doesn’t seem to run as smoothly on the Apple Watch as it does on the phones
