Thoughts on why people are walking away from the game...

Recommended Posts

Well I have had two friends refuse to come play with me again because of blatant racist nonsense(the reason I play alone usually, too many stories to count), there is no youth system worth anything, and market value for everything in the sport is determined by the richest demographic in the world, so most everyone else struggles to keep up.

Oh, and it's hard and take forever.

Not for everyone lol

No one should have to go through that crap in this day and age. You're right though, golf is hard and it's not for everyone. The fact that it's a difficult game to play is still the #1 reason people go on to other things in my opinion.

That's awesome man I wish I could play with half the guys on GolfWRX, I'm sure they would be 10 times more fun than the duffers I get stuck with.

It definitely sucks to go through, and half the guys don't understand they are conditioned to be toolbags (had two guys joking under their breath about how dark people are bad tippers and don't repair ball marks two days ago. One started to look uncomfortable, the other guy looks up and says "oh I'm sorry, didn't remember we were playing with a man of color." I had to hold back both a laugh and a well thrown right hook, super throwback racism). I have refused to play with strangers since.

The topic is why people are walking away, not why we all love it. It being hard is a good reason to walk away, which is why pundits shouldn't constantly remind the public of that, after they send them to a club fitter, then the club salesman, then the ball guy, shoe guy, teaching pro, swing gimmick salesman, pain cream geek, club membership expert, and outfit and rain gear consultant. It is a lot to handle....which is why I suggested earlier that we promote the true value of the game, the emotional and relationship rewards of a lifetime. I will never be as good as Tiger, but I will bet I have had just as many great laughs and experiences on the course. Plus, I even get to laugh at my mistakes because they don't cost me six figures.

The world is changing. As a group young people are far less physically active than they were a few decades ago and for many of them their entire world is built around instant gratification. Everything is at their fingertips. Games, movies, texting, internet etc. Obesity rates rose dramatically in the last couple of decades and I wager many kids couldn't even make it around a golf course without a cart. We're in the midst of a cultural shift the likes of which we have never seen before in such a short time. No surprise that a game that is difficult to be good at let alone master, and is expensive at the same time, is falling in popularity .

It is tough to spend substantial money on a game that you suck at for 5 hours. Especially when all you hear is buy buy buy this and that at $100+ to fix your swing, then get fitted, take a vaca, install your own green, use this pain cream etc.

Commercialism aimed at people with ample money is killing the spirit of the game. Even kids require the best clubs and outfits.

The elemental experience of you golfing, nature, the smells, sounds, swings, miracles are rarely mentioned. Literature (stories, fiction, humor, etc) is all but gone. Golf doesn't answer the question "What's in it for me?"

Today, it seems like you need money to play. Sad. I love golf on my own terms, practice all the time, have a great time with friends, my wife, and alone. My entire set of clubs cost $200--I just upgraded from a set that cost $30. I shoot to a 12. I will be 69 in Nov.

You have some valid points amongst your passive brag!

Brag? Facts aren't bragging. I'm proud to stick with something and get better, particularly against obstacles. Nothing passive about me :)

I'm trying to figure out the "brag" part....................... :dntknw:

Maybe it's this comment;

"I shoot to a 12. I will be 69 in Nov."

I think in short it is all financial. Too much commercialism. You need this, you need that, you didn’t buy the right one, you need to work with this guy and start doing this. And every suggestion is costing the new guy at least a hundred. Golf just doesn’t get it. Well yes they do. Plenty of money going into golf related products and services. It’s still a rich man’s game and they like it that way.

Information overload, too much conflicting and confusing instructional information. What’s a newbie to do with all that plethora of knowledge but go spiraling down the rabbit hole.

If we oldtimers get lost looking for that next angry fix, how much more frustrating must it be for someone just starting out?

Instructions must be simplified to the point that the new golfer isn’t completely overwhelmed to the point of mental fatigue and physical failure.

Damn, I'm 65, a WASP (all my life, I didn't have much choice, mom and dad had sex) and now after many years make high 5 figures. I must be one of "they".

I realize I am so lucky. I grew up in a dirt poor household, suffer from alcohol and drug addiction (Been clean and sober 7 years) lived on the street for a short while, had no food or money and am now in a place where I get to golf, with all manner of people (black, white, brown, yellow) and all of the differences we all bring to the golf course. I play munis in my community, can still walk 18 while pushing my cart , surrounded by nature and recognize how lucky I am to do that .

Just wanted to say that, because where I live, no-one is leaving the game because of bigotry and racism. There is no excuse for that.

I agree, I have played at private clubs where the older members may as well be a stereotype for those "white crackers" I have grown up seeing on TV. But that isn't acceptable.

Just for fun, go find a lawyer who enjoys stirring it up and make bigotry and racism an issue for that club/course. No place in the world for that

I wasn’t making a 1 percenter type argument. Certainly not going on the race card. I have no issue with people who have done well financially. My point was simply there are many financial obligations for those with families. Golf is much more commercialized today and there is a lot of selling going on. So it can be a nightmare for new golfers on a tight budget. There are definately bargains out there, but it takes some research to know what the bargains are. I’m thankful I learned the game in the 70’s from my father who never believed we had to have the latest and greatest. Anyone that is committed can get into it, but hard to argue against other less expensive hobbies.

I'm in my early 30's and struggle finding anyone my age that is interested in the sport. There are probably a few reasons:

1. I don't live in a warm weather climate, so golf can only be played half the year. And that's only if you're dedicated. The few golfers my age that I do know are really only interested in playing when it's 65+ degrees and sunny, so we're limited to a few months a year.

2. The cost is somewhere between annoying, prohibitive, and obscene. Driving ranges start at $10 for a small bucket and obviously go up from there. The worst courses are all about $40 for 18 with a cart (I live in a very hilly area with no real walkable course options). The course we play at most frequently, which I would consider a decent public course, is over $50. The fall rate is $49!

3. It's not an easy sport to pick up, and it requires a lot of practice, which is made difficult by points 1 and 2.

What gives me some hope is that heated driving ranges and indoor facilities seem to be becoming more prevalent around me. We also just got a new Top Golf. I'd really like to see indoor simulators take off. There's a winter simulator league that's unfortunately a bit too far away from me to manage, but I'd love to see more of these pop up.

I understand your thinking with the simulators and Top Golf type places. But for me, maybe partially due to being a 50 something golf lifer, all the synthetics are part of the problem with golf. It’s just changing the expectations of what golf is and whats acceptable. In the mid to late 80’s we started seeing the turf ranges. Ithey realky didn’t start catching on here in Texas until recently. In the Houston area it is becoming a real challenge to find quality grass practice facilities that are open daily. Even some of the better clubs restrict access. I am probably in the minority, as I don’t believe even many old timers have too big an issue with this. But it is changing how the game is played and practiced. The new golfers don’t know any better and they accept it all as the norm. The trend will continue and who knows what golf will look like in 50 years?

That's an interesting point. I've only been playing golf since the mid-to-late 90's and all the ranges I've seen have essentially been the same: several bays of turf mats with a small and usually terrible grass area off to the side.

What I like about the simulators and indoor facilities is that I can play year round and rain or shine. As a weekend golfer in SW Pennsylvania, it's a serious crapshoot as to whether the weather will hold up during golf season. It makes our short season even shorter.

Is it that people are leaving the game or is it that not many people are taking up the game? My 30 year old son lives in the DFW metroplex. He gets home from work at about 6;30, depending on traffic. It's at least 30 minutes to the nearest muni, so he might have 2 hours to play during the week. Weekends, it would take nearly all day to get to a course, spend the 5 hours, and then get home. He's not married, has a good job, no debt (thank you for the full ride, TCU), but the time and expense are more than he wants to deal with. He has friends who play, and they tell me that weekends on the munis are an endless slog. Get out into rural Texas and there are many, many little golf courses, and they are all struggling as the communities are hollowed out.

Different generational priorities, in conjunction with the time, cost and difficulty factors. My father in law played golf 2-3 times a week, including Sat and Sun, plus he bowled in a couple leagues. My wife called her mom a golf widow. It was normal back then.

For my generation (I’m 52 with 2 teenagers) and younger, spending time with our kids and family is generally more of a priority. I’ve almost never missed one of my kids’ events in order to play golf, and often just forego golf just to stay home and hand out with my wife and kids. And my wife has never had a bad word to say about me playing golf...it’s just my priority.

Now, I’m a golf addict, so I’ll never walk away from the game. But take someone who’s a more casual player, and these factors could easily make them give up the game.

Ended up leaving a course before teeing off #1 and going home instead today because the self-important ~65 year old I was paired with today on a very busy course refused to share a cart with me and attempted to swap me out for some random walker single with a later tee time that he claimed to "know from playing with before." The course staff finally agreed to give me my own cart, but Mr. Self-Important still wasn't interested in having me along and basically told me his group was taking the walker and teeing off without me. The next group they could pair me with was at a time 45 minutes later with little chance of getting in 18 before dark, and at that point I had zero interest in playing with this a-hole even if he caved in to the staff and let me join, so I told the shop staff to give me a refund and I went home golf-less today.

I can see how a less dedicated/newer-to-the-game player could end up deciding to leave the game altogether if they have repeated experiences like this involving other players. It ruined my afternoon, and I've been playing this game for 20+ years and 2000+ rounds.

The price of PXG's...younger folks think that's the new entry price to play golf.

Interesting. I got my PXG clubs through the Heroes Program and were actually cheaper than a set of Titleist. Now, they are even offering the Gen1’s for a very good price.

I never thought PXG clubs were aimed at young people with no money to spare.
