What clubs in the last 15 years qualify as "unicorns"?

Recommended Posts

Adams Redlines: 5050, 4060, 3070

I still play the 5050, nothing can kick it out of the bag. Have not found a fairway wood that outperforms it (for me).

Don't forget the 4555 and 2080!

I gamed the 3070 and 4555.

The 3070 is a Top 5 All Time Great! In the likes of the conversation with Titleist's 970, Taylor Made's V-Steel, Tour Edge's CB1/CB2, etc.

I saw one of those 4555 heads not too long ago. What's the story with those? I've never had the chance to hit one.

Was a "Hybrid" Fairway. Was a blend of the 4060 and 5050. Was a cult like club. I had one, along with my 3070, and while I didn't LOVE the 4555, I DIDN'T hate it either. Just didn't fit my setup at the time. Was a bit awkward, I was trying to force it.

JMO, but I thought the 3070DF, was the club to own of the bunch from the time period.

If I had to go back in time and change history, I would have gone 16° 3070DF and the 20° Idea Pro Hybrid; rather than, 16° 3070DF, 19° 4555, and then 20° Idea Pro Hybrid.

Thinking about this and talking about it makes me appreciate "BigHitter's" sales skills! That man must have made a mint for a few years! Lime green everything, Adams and TM!!

In no particular order:

Taylor Made R7 425 TP - perhaps the most perfect pear shaped driver ever.

Titleist 905R - great shape, great performance, great sound

Mizuno MP-32 - revolutionary, most forgiving blade ever, and maintained the feel of a Mizuno

Taylor Made R9 TP “B” irons - maybe the best ever by TM, despite not being forged

Titleist AP2 series of irons - almost a decade with minimal design tweaks, and still one of the top three players iron every year.

The word gets thrown around a lot in the BST, seemingly reserved for clubs that were unexpectedly good or popular, and have remained popular beyond the standard cycle. Having a 50+ page thread on here seems to be a pre-requisite too!

Just for fun, two questions

  1. When someone says unicorn, what do you think it should mean?
  2. What are your favourite unicorns?

I'll start - UDI 1 iron, Adams BTY Fairway wood, R510 TP driver?

Since 2005, the only club I can think of that is still revered to this day is the 905R. Don't get me wrong, I love the R510TP (in fact I have one myself) but that was made in 2003 (I think), not 2005 (you said last 15 years, not last 17).

Though i'll admit I didn't check the numbers before posting, 2003 is 15 years ago by my maths? Regardless, 905r is a great suggestion!

You're right...my bad....

He is commenting from the FUTURE!!

Quite possibly, the OP's defintion of "Unicorn" differs from yours....In Post #1, the OP mentioned clubs that are not only "unexpectedly good" but those that have remained popular well beyond the normal product cycle, even as he is asking others for their opinions as to the meaning of a "Unicorn Club"..

Above is the 1st (OP) Post suggesting a definition, but also asking others what "Unicorn' should mean...Obviously there can be no 'universally accepted definition' for the term "Unicorn", since the term is based on a ficticious image to begin with!... You can therefore define it however you like!... :taunt:

Wasn't there a rare version of Taylormade 300 irons? Tour or TP version maybe?

Tom Lehman used them. Less offset, boxier toe. Miura made. Nice club.

I was thinking Miura forged TM 300 Forged, I once owned a set which had belonged to Gregory Havret. However they are 2002 clubs so just miss out on the OP's parameters.

As for Unicorn status I personally think that a Unicorn is something that we know exists but could equally be a myth as either nobody has seen one or next to nobody has. To that end the V steel cannot be one as my friend has one in his garage which he bought for next to nothing. His was cheap and is unloved.

My nomination for unicorn status are the JDM Taylormade R9 Forged irons.....stunning. I know they exist because I've seen photographs of them, just like I've seen photographs of unicorns and I once saw a set for sale on ebay, they were tatty and expensive. However I've never seen a set in the flesh, just like a unicorn.

I remember a friend that had both the taylormade XR03 and XR05 drivers from release day. They went absolutely miles but I never saw them in anyone else's bag or in shops.

I had an XR05 for a season - it did go miles, just not always in the right direction :)

To be fair to it, I hit 2 of my most memorable drives with it - one 350 yards downhill at Conwy, and the other to 2 feet away from the pin on a 290 yard uphill Par 4. So it was long, but wildly inconsistent. I should have kept the R300 I had before, but was tempted by new shiny.

The multimaterial heads Taylormade forgot they had produced when the 16 M1/M2 came out!

Adams is listed on here a bunch and I'd have to agree, they seem to have made as many prototype clubs as production models. I still game a BTY tour issue 3 wood and two of there Idea Pro hybrids.

The 3446 "clamshell" has been one I've always wanted to try.

And the Speedline Classic driver with the square protrusion on the sole is one I'd love to get a hold of. I had a 9015d that was a bomber, but they all seemed to sit open. As the legend goes this was a more squared up forgiving version of that club.

MP-64’s?

I have a set in beautiful condition that I’m close to putting on the BST. I love them but I just don’t see myself playing them. #shamelessplug

Ahh I see, drum up interest in this thread, build them up as a "unicorn" set, then buff up the price in the BST for a profit... :pimp:
