MOI set - Specs when ordering from the manufacturer

I have read a lot on this forum about MOI and ways to modify existing sets to get closer to an MOI matching set using progressive swingweight instead of a MOI auditor machine. But, I didn't see any information specific to new clubs during the ordering process from a manufacturer. Are there specific changes or intervals between clubs you can select when ordering a new set of irons from the manufacturer that will get closer to an MOI matched set rather than the standard swingweight matching? Let's assume the manufacturer will vary the length, lie, and swingweight of each club individually based on requested specs.

To be more specific, I want to order a new set of irons JPX 919 Hot Metal irons from Mizuno. I have hit every iron I intend on purchasing (5-PW) and the 8 iron felt best. Assuming every 8 iron Mizuno will produce has the same MOI, what specs would you request for the remaining irons. 8 iron = 36.5" length, 62d lie, D2 swingweight. I was fit for standard length and lie clubs.

Would you do a 3/8th difference in between irons and 0.5 swingweight increase per club? Would you also do a 1d lie increase every 3 clubs, rounding to a 0.5d for the clubs in between? I will pay extra for digital lofting or go through a fitter to try to get clubs as close to requested spec as possible.

I realize this post assumes a lot of manufacturing consistency that may not exist, but I am looking for the general guidelines in a perfect world.

You have the right idea, but there is a lot of reliance on manufacturing consistency. Getting a set that has a shaft that is 2 grams lighter than it should be, a grip that is 2 grams lighter than it should be, and a head that is 3 grams lighter than it should be will throw the MOI off, even if the length and swing weight is close. There is also the possibility that the MOI of the 8 iron you liked isn't the best MOI for you. Your true personal MOI can only be found through a proper fitting. I'd recommend sourcing a head/shaft/grip that you like and building a demo club, taking note of the static weight of each component and the entire club as well. That way you can request for Mizuno to use properly weighted components and at least be in the ball park. That is about the closest you can get without actually having a set MOI matched.

If you're willing to go away from OEMs, I'd really recommend looking into a local Tom Wishon fitter that is MOI certified. They'd be able to build you a perfect set up. I had an experience with a Wishon fitting recently, and what I thought were the proper specs for me ended up still not being the perfect set up.

Just to say Mizuno won’t build sets (for consumers) with variable swing weight, or variable length, you have to pick one value for the whole set. I don’t know if you can get around this by ordering individual irons with specific spec.

Naturally the best way to get what you want is to find a custom club builder with a Mizuno head only account, that way you can have the set built any way you want.

This. No major oems will build to a 3/8ths length build. Nor will they do progressive swingweighting.

Your best bet is to figure out how long your shortest club is going to be. I.e. i play a 36" wedge. Most PW are 35.5 or 35.75"

Order the set from the OEM 1" or .5" over standard or uncut if they do it and grips in the box. Then when you get the set theres no need for extensions. Get a builder or do it yourself and cut to 3/8ths length increments and SW accordingly.

Quite a lot of good info in this thread already, so I'll just add my personal experience in trying to order irons from an OEM this year to build out an pseudo-MOI set. There's just no way to specify the specs exactly as what you need, and the manufacturing tolerances throw everything off anyway, so I decided to order everything a bit long and then I rebuilt the irons with 3/8" and 0.5 SW progressions.

I had previously been fit for an MOI matched set of irons, so I was able to base the rebuild off the length and SW of the ungripped 6-iron of my MOI matched set. This allowed me to get in the ballpark, but it wasn't exact due to the relative lack of precision of my swing weight scale. If I hadn't known my MOI number, I would not have attempted this build because there are just too many variables. If you can do the pseudo-MOI build with a reference club that has your target MOI value, then it's doable.

Ultimately, this experience finally convinced me to buy my own MOI scale for use in future builds.

If you can, you should get the set you want....and then pull the shafts so that you can weigh and get the exact weight of each head. Now from scratch, you can "retro-fit" and rebuild the set with the exact head weights you need, with tip weights or drilling weight out of the bottom of the bore of the hosel....if you need to remove weight.

This is why building clubs from component form is the best option, so everything can be weighed and spec-ed as precise as possible, before and during the build process. "Factory-builds" always limit how precise a set can really be

Like the other above have written, you cant order a set like this from OEM, but if you know what play lengths and specs you seek in the end (has to be modified after you get the clubs), we can help out with what specs to order to be able to build that set without using extensions etc.

You seems to want a 3/8" set, but what play lengths vs standard?

We have lots of options for what club to start from, depending on how we want the set to be in the end, so look at this chart and tell us what set up and play lengths you want to use, and what SW value your starting club has.

If you need help to figure it out, just ask, there is no stupid questions here, this is over the head of most players, so its not expected that this is easy and strait forward, but when we know where to go, we get the picture of where to start from to be able to make it.

Thanks Howard, that table is extremely helpful. Sounds like my best bet is to find a fitter who can fit me for my ideal MOI, and then I can figure out the ordering specs so I can cut the clubs to length once received.
