Ultimate Tiger Mom

I think it's safe to say this is likely his first and last tourney on her bag lol

I don't know. She made $652 last year. He will probably apologize to her and suck it up to stay on that money train.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

This article shows both sides of the story from Doris and the caddie. I believe the caddie's account. It is really bad. Even more so because it was in the higher levels. Just desperate behavior.

When I played junior golf there were a few cheaters. I remember at a county tournament, one of the guys in my foursome came to me and said the guy he was keeping score for was cheating by telling him different scores than he was counting. We were young 11-12 and didn't do much. But, I recall us confronting him but he just denied it and we didn't have much proof. The jerk did end up placing second. Ugh.

I hope the LPGA bans the goofy golf mom from all sanctioned events for life. She should never be allowed at another tournament! And the player should get a few years off to think about it and learn to follow the rules of golf...

Ironically, I was talking with a competitor in our club championship and he expressed concern a FC's wife might do exactly that. The players were walking but she has an super fast private cart and would speed off to her hubby's drive from the tee box. She's an accomplished player too, and they both have that type of reputation.

Glad the Mom got caught. Sad statement, clearly they invested too much in their daughters' golf dream.

Did the guy you were talking to also arrange a "spectator" for that round?

Someone help me understand the title of this thread? Tiger mom?

https://en.wikipedia...Tiger_parenting

It was the Club Championship so there were some other spectators. He had a friend walking with him who actually refuted the score on one hole. The match was going favorably for my friend so he quit worrying about it too much. I'm sure had it been a tighter contest it would have been more charged. The FC has a reputation in our region that precedes him. We have another friend who is the assistant coach for the high school and we were just using him as a hypothetical example of how you never clear your name once your suspect. Good reason to never become suspect.

The caddies account is very damning. I don’t think Chen has any obligation to trust the spectator or take a penalty if she legitimately disputes their version of events, but she certainly has an obligation to seek an official for a ruling or clarification. I don’t think you can worry about pace of play or other such considerations in that situation.

The real head scratcher here is that even if Chen were intentionally cheating, she probably would have gotten away with it had she sought a ruling. Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t most he said she said rulings come down to letting the player determine what they think happened?

Chen can play two balls, but she cannot simply ignore the spectator. This decision discusses this exact situation:

18-1/4

Spectator Says Ball Was Moved by Outside Agency But Player Not Sure

Q.A spectator tells a player that his ball has been moved by an outside agency. Neither the player nor his caddie was aware the ball had been moved. Is the player obliged to take the spectator's word and replace the ball on the spot from which the spectator said it was moved?

A.No. In stroke play, if it is impractical to get a decision from the Committee, the player should, under Rule 3-3, hole out both with the original ball and a second ball played from the spot from which the original ball is alleged to have been moved, and request the Committee to decide the matter at the end of the round. In reaching a decision the Committee should interrogate the spectator, if possible.

If she had asked for an official immediately, the official would have "interrogated the spectator", which is what I assume they actually did. My guess is that they would have reached the same conclusion, and Chen would have been required to go back to the tee to hit her 3rd shot.

The most bothersome thing about this whole situation to me is that, fairly or not, I tend to believe that when something like this happens with a parent or family member, what are the odds that it was the very first time it happened.

How many events has her Mom attended in her junior and college career? What is the likelihood that her Mom just decided at that moment that this would be something to do, and would be caught the very first time having done something like that?

I know it’s not a fair way to look at it but it’s human nature.

The other thing that really bothers me is how Doris handled it at every subsequent step of the way. And I regret that as a young person she didn’t have the presence of mind or maturity to listen to her caddie and respond in a way that would minimize the downstream consequences.

And the consequences for this one will be fairly harsh I suspect in terms of her reputation amongst her peers.

Exactly what I was thinking. Kinda like when a person gets a DUI and says it’s the first time they ever drank and drove. You don’t just start throwing balls back in bounds ...

This is what I'm thinking as well. Think about it. How much was this really helping Chen in this event? Unless I'm missing something there was nothing to gain by doing this.

This is not politically correct, but feels like this speaks to the pressure the Asian ladies are under from their families

I've lived in Asia for 8 years and can't do anything but agree. I think the biggest factor is that as an Asian (especially Chinese) kid, then you are expected to support your parents for the rest of their lives. Couple this with overcrowded cities and you end up with a culture of hyper competitiveness and win at all costs mentality. It's what you need to survive.

When I was in Singapore, the kids would start school at 7.30am, often stay until after 7pm, and would often have evening and weekend tuition. School holidays were spent on extra tuition in subjects where they were deficient. The result was hyper intelligent kids, but emotionally and socially stunted.
