Srixon 585 4 iron vs Utility Options

JFM628

Recommended Posts

I am about to place my order for a combo 585/785 set and was wondering what I should do with the 4 iron/22* slot in the bag.

I have not hit all the utilities out there but I have certainly read enough here about them. With this spot, its 215-220 yard spot in the bag and I am simply looking for forgiveness...don't need to work the ball...need to get it in the air and straight.

Am I picking anything up with the U85? Other utilities more forgiving? Crossover? Or is the difference minimal and I should just match the 585 4 iron.

Any thoughts would be helpful

I can tell you that the U65 had a higher flight for me than the z565, which was nice for holding greens from the distances you are referencing. The 85 series might be different though, so you should probably try to hit them under the circumstances they will be used, if at all possible.

Woods/Fairways:  Callaway with Mitsubishi shafts

Irons:  Srixon with Dynamic Gold shafts

I have Srixon i506 5-PW and I'm very happy with the U65 4/23 as my "four iron." It doesn't look all that much different from the 4i from my set, but there's a lot more weight down low and the top line is thicker. It really promotes confidence. The ball goes HIGH and straight.

In my experience U85 4 iron flies a touch higher than the 585. I'm loving my U85. Good forgiveness for the type of club and a monster off the tee.

I have the z765 and went with the u65 in the 4 iron. I ordered mine with the same shaft as the irons.

For me, the u65 works brilliantly and the distances blend perfectly.

Good luck.

Do you guys hit this club off the deck? I understand its good off the tee and all.

Absolutely. To be honest I mainly use it off the deck, going in to long par 4s. I just treat it exactly the same as the rest of the 765 set.

I have 545 irons, 5 - PW but also play the Zu65 4 utility.

GREAT club!

Do the utility irons gap into the Z 545 set? I was noticing that with respect to the Z 585 and utilities, there are only 2 degrees difference between the 585 6 iron and the 5 iron in the utility iron. I know that the shafts are longer in the utility irons, but the potential gapping issues concerned me.

Wish the utilities had a vsole. Hit down on your irons...except for your utility irons, dont hit down on those.

I carry both a 23 utility iron and a 19 degree hybrid. If the lie is not ideal I tend to favour the hybrid

Are you guys going with the stock graphite shaft? Or a steel shaft to match the rest of your irons?

I have graphite. It plays lighter than my irons but I don’t mind that. You get used to it

  • 4 weeks later...

If you are a strong iron or aspiring player, go with the 5 iron set.

Skip the 23* utility and go right to the 20*/3 U45/65/85. You can always bend it weak to 21* afterwards plus, it will look better with less offset and the 1* of bounce will help.

I sold my 23* U45 because the 5 iron 565 was going just as far. Threw the 4 iron back in and custom ordered the 3 iron at the time and went to the 18* bent to 17* U45

I also have no issues hitting the 18* of the fairway or rough.

I am a strong iron game player.

I’m in the same boat. I’m looking on doing 5-7 Z585 and 8-PW in Z785. I notice the U85 4 iron is 23 degrees and the Z585 5 iron is 24 degrees. Potential gaping issue there or will that U85 play the same as a Z585 4 iron which is 22 degrees? Just different flight?
