I was looking for bands that have been around for a while, and have been big influences on the music scene, not necessarily your favorite bands that most people haven't heard of.

I'd add Nirvana to this list. But I agree with most. I think the Dead were able to encapsulate that early punk vibe (even tho they were jam rock) due to the fact that they were anti establishment to the core. Now that's Rock N Roll. Their musical expanse over such a period of time, touched not just one demographic, but many.

Earth, Wind, and Fire is a great choice. I guess I should have been more unambiguous in the criteria. CSN&Y was formed in the states, but neither Nash nor Young are American, so that's a borderline pick. I was looking for bands that have been around for a while, and have been big influences on the music scene, not necessarily your favorite bands that most people haven't heard of.

 

Oh, and cdnglf - shame on you.

 

There is a huge difference between greatest American band and most influential. And I would say, very few of the truly influential bands ever made it big because they were largely ahead of their time, and subsequently hung it up shortly thereafter (or the savant died early like Hendrix and Cobain).
