Hogan Apex Plus to What

Cart Path Only

Recommended Posts

Have played Ben Hogan Apex Plus irons (pre-2000 version with Apex 4 flex) for about 2 years now and am looking for something new. I dabbled with the P770s last year but did not like them. The Hogans are starting to show some age but hard to replicate their feel and control. Played with MP-64s this Spring but they were used and had significant wear and tear on the face. May get criticized but the Hogan's felt just as soft as the MP-64s.

Question is if anyone has had similar experience and found irons they enjoyed. Was considering some newer options like the 919 Forged or new Srixon line. I am also intrigued by the new Cobra Forged Tec Black irons. I am a steep iron player/digger and am pretty against bulky irons. In addition to newer clubs, any suggestions on older clubs are also welcomed (newer than Apex's). Also as a former Marine, I have wrestled with the idea of just getting PXG Gen 1's.

Apex Plus to me is all time best irons. I switch to Adam CB1 many years ago. For older iron, I think CB1 and Adam Xtd are quite similar in feel and look.

PXG Gen 1 is a very good choice also.

Callaway Paradym TD 9, Autoflex 505.
TM Stealth Plus 5W, Hzrdous Smoke Red 5.5

TSR2 7 wood, Ventus TR 6S.
Paradym X 5 hybrid, Ventus 7S.

Paradym X 6 hybrid, Ventus 7S.
PXG Gen4 0311ST, 7 to GW. Steelfiber Private Reserve 95R.
Artisan 54, 58. KBS TGI 90.

Callaway PM grind 64, KBS Hi-rev.
Odyssey 2 Balls Armlock.  Vessel Player 3 Stand Bag.

Those Apex Pluses are still nice clubs. I could see why their feel is hard to replicate as they're forged by Endo.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

I play the ’99 apex blade, with a backup set of apex edge pros. If those are a little too like-for-like, I found a mizuno MP-30 at my local range to try from the loaner bucket and hit it; felt softer than about anything else I’d ever hit, but I had just made an iron purchase and couldn’t afford another one.

1999 Apex MB is bodacious . You want comparable GI to Plus's, TM RAC MB is quite easy to get on with. Or Titleist 962B, a fine cast CB of that day.

This is what I did. I had 2006 Hogan Blades that I loved. They started to brown pretty significantly in the center - transitioned to 2005 TM RAC MBs 3-PW with the same shafts and I found them to actually be better and I enjoy them more than any other club I have hit. I’ve got OG Nike Blades, PXG Gen 1s, Hogan Blades, and the TMs and I play the TMs every time. The rest are either wall candy or getting sold. The PXGs were a huge let down to me in feel and performance. I too got the Hero discount which made it worth the shot - I won’t be trying any other PXG irons I don’t think.

Carried the RAC's for many years, hands down best mix of traditional forged feel/performance and GI forgiveness I've come across. Still have them just moved on from shafts of my set.

I played Hogan Apex for about 10 years until I decided it was time for a new set of sticks. I went with Mizuno MPH since they felt similar and had virtually the same look from the topline on down. Switch was seamless. Flight was a bit higher but I wanted that.

Callaway Rogue
Callaway Mavrik 3w
Callaway Epic hybrid
Callaway Rogue 5 wood
Mizuno MPH 5-PW
Vokey 50,56
Scotty Cameron Red X2

Bridgestone RXS

I played a mix set of Hogan Apex Plus (5,6,7) and Apex (8,9,E) for almost 10 years.

This past February I replaced that set with a split set of Mizuno MP-18's.

The MP-18 MMC's shape really reminds me of the Apex Plus, and the feel is amazing. Strongly recommended.

The Mizuno PW shape still looks goofy compared to the Apex/Apex Plus Equalizer.

The Srixon PW shape is better, but I couldn't deny the MP-18's performance.

  • 2 weeks later...

Good timing, I had exactly the same clubs and just changed as they were totally worn out.

Was a hard thing to do as I had used them for the past 7 years, but I tried pretty much everything out there - P790 and i500 I did not feel in control; not enough control or spin and just went too far.

I did not need more distance, but wanted more help with off centre hits - recently got myself some P760; love them so far - they do go very high for me - so I can stop a 4 iron on a dime :)
