My quest for a black putter head begun

So I have the new evnroll er 1.2 that I like, finally something that works but I like black murdered out putters so I did my research and was going to try blackwell ss blackener but then I was going to do polymer but I was really worried about changing the feel of the putter

So being im a Wactchsmith and have done so many one offs on panerai and Rolex mainly pvd finishes to give that tool watch look but in Rolex most wanted that shiney black look but I really don't think pvd is durable enough for a putter and then I asked my friend that does the coatings for me what his thoughts were and bamm dlc was the way we decided would not change the integrity of the feel of the putter and be durable, but instead of bead blasting , I'm going to leave it in it's factory finish, anyway I thought you guys would like to see another way you could change the look of a putter you love

Here are some before pics and I would love to get your ideas as well, I almost did the torch thing but I felt it didn't really impregnate the metal enough and I don't like maintenance lol08a9eab874ac473a116ac1a5f1352694.jpg79004076c7102f8d218f13e228ffd165.jpg7f51e06469776ae8cdb33eecc52e9b7c.jpg0c62c748bfddeefdb95a4fb881845616.jpge89ff549b5027708001b900670a24d66.jpg122bd1b8138ad29581880a69271d8976.jpg0c199b9c01ed5e384a828947d3d722e1.jpg

I'm not too familiar with DLC, is it the same or anything like Black Nitriding? I'm not even sure if Black Nitriding is available for SS, but I had it done to a set of TM RAC TP Combos and the finish is amazing and didn't change feel much. Also, I had the chrome stripped from mine and then bead blasted to get a "satin" finish so not sure how the Nitriding would come out on a shiny finish?

Well it's basically pvd on steroids, pvd is now ceramic based and doc is diamond hardness here is a small article to help

DLC Coatings

In recent years, a new generation of PVD + PACVD (plasma-assisted CVD) coatings has gained widespread commercial success. As is well known, carbon can exist in three allotropic forms. Carbon, in a diamond crystal structure, is one of the hardest know materials. Carbon, in a graphite crystal structure, is very soft and lubricous. Carbon-based coatings, referred to as Diamond-like-Carbon (DLC) coatings, combine these two different properties of diamond and graphite - hence possess high hardness levels - in the range of conventional tribological PVD coatings (1500 - 3200 HV), coupled with a coefficient of friction which is 200-500% lower than that of conventional PVD coatings.

I really think it will be better than polymer and bluing and torching

Why are you worried about changing the feel with polymer? How do you know this DLC coating won't change the feel either?

I've owned 2 polymer finished putters and have never really cared about the feel changing.

Yes it's like best blasted and then coated see that's how I do watches with pvd but it's much thinner but makes a watch look more like what we call a tool watch, but dlc is just atad thicker

I notice they use what they call armour 5 something sounds very durable , it's 8 microns thick which is better than the polymer stuff but still thicker thank dlc which is usually around 2 micron at the thickest and toughest but can get to 1 micron, I'm going to be honest I really am putting well with this putter I mean I was sinking 10 footers like it was easy, lol but I always loved my black Scotty's and others but the finish would quiet frankly piss me off because I'm picky and those oil cans didn't matter how good you are at keeping them oiled they still end up with rust, but that black finish on them cobra forged black irons I had were so darn durable and I was hitting the ground with them so that is another reason I went with dlc which is basically the same coating

Your putter is beautiful how long have you had it and what made you decide it was the one? Lol it's almost like when I made my decision to marry lol

I have had it for a couple months. Went up to Evnroll when they were first getting started, tried all of their heads, staff was helpful and even met the owner. Liked how they updated from the butterfly ER3 to more square edges.

I'm a fan of Evnroll..good feel, sound and even roll ;-) They are the ones that recommended Labworx. First time ever going with a custom finish on the putter...like you...can't stand bright and shiny. Give me clean and simple.

Oh...you mean something like this:

Yes I had the forged tec blacks but same thing basically, except I'm not bead blasting mine I'm going with the finish that's in there which had a satin finish with some matte finish on the top line,I figured it might be cool looking, I just sent it off so it will probably be next week sometime

I'm definitely a believer in those dots on the top my usual miss is left because of me sightly pulling it but I made way more of those than I usually do, lol made me wowsers now I had to get it black lol
