Welding new hosel onto putter

Ok so I got the hair brained idea to redo a putter that I have and it's a center shafted putter but I want to put a short slant neck hosel on it instead because I've never been a big fan of center shaft but I like this putter. So my question is when I get the hosel set on the putter, I know I'll have to make sure I get the lie angle set to where I want it, but will I also have to adjust the loft that will be on the putter when I put on the hosel? Or will the be something already there with the way the putter face is milled?

The answer depends on how the putter sets up in the playing position. If your plumbers neck replicates the shaft position same as the stock shaft then the loft will be the same. If the shaft comes up at a different angle than before you will have a different loft. The devil's in the details.

The only good way to do this with any acceptable level of accuracy is to first know precisely what loft and lie you want to have on the putter after the hosel is welded - then you have to build a jig to secure the head and hold the hosel in that exact loft and lie position while you do the welding.

Any other way, the hosel will pull off position when the first weld is done. And if you try to bend the hosel after welding, that's a very dodgy proposition that very often results in breaking the hosel off at the weld line. Been there done that and a proper jig is the only way to do this with any level of accuracy.

A jig is a great idea. I was kind of struggling with how to get it precise but I will definitely be building a jig to keep it simple and easy to make very precise. Thanks Tom, I will take pictures as I progress and eventually show the finished product on here.

That's a good idea but I'd rather not drill into the putter honestly. I have an uncle who is a welder and owns a machine shop so he will be helping me with it. That's the only reason I'm willing to try it honestly.

Don't weld, GLUE.

Epoxy these days is so much stronger and cleaner and will last so long as to be forgettable. You can also make a mistake and redo without a whole lot of fuss and bother.

That's not a bad idea but the only reason I wouldn't do it is because I want the hosel to flow into the putter head with a curved not just straight on there with the possibility of a gap underneath it. But glue would be a good way to set it on there and really be able to see where exactly I want the hosel and how i want it set up exactly so thank you!

That is true. Definitely going to be a tedious process to get it set properly and with the right loft. Thanks for the help!

Just a quick mention that a properly welded hosel should easily tolerate bending and aligning thereafter. Welding heat WILL create warpage, so some post welding coldsetting to get the hosel in the exact position needed is recommended regardless of what kind of fixture you use during the weld process.

Sounds simple and it actually works, provided you are truly a good welder with the right equipment for the job. You might find it somewhat surprising how many people actually do not know beans about making a proper weld.
