Screwed by eBay member...VENTING

On Nov. 4th I bid on an auction and won it for much less than what I expected (I had a max bid of $400.) Two days later I received an email from the seller that he is out of town and cannot ship the clubs until he returns next week. He says that if that is an inconvenience he is ready to refund my money asap. I call bull already but email him back saying that it is no big deal and to just ship when he returns the following week. Today I get another email from him saying he was packaging the clubs up and noticed that two of the shafts had damage and again offered a refund. Before I can reply I have a notice of refund and cancellation email in my inbox. At this point I am pissed, I email him back and told him that he and I both know that the clubs are not damaged and he is being dishonest because he is not happy with the price he received. He followed up with an email only stating that he had no intentions of re-listing the clubs and offered no denial that he had been dishonest as I accused.

 

I called eBay and demanded they open a claim on the purchase, which surprisingly they did. I am not sure it will do any good but it was something. I would not have been so pissed as they are just golf clubs but once I purchased them I went ahead and found a 4, 5 and 6 iron and purchased shafts and everything I would have needed to build the complete set. I will now have to piece together the 7-PW and it will cost substantially more.

 

Anyway, thanks for letting me rant. Hope everyone else has had better luck with their purchases.

Good luck with your claim. You've done the right thing as the seller should have paid more to protect his listing with a reserve if he was going to act like a jerk for not getting the price he wanted.

I would be pissed too.... I had a WRX Member do a similar thing to me of a Srixon Z785 Driver.... He kept saying he dropped the driver off at his work mail room

and that he would check and see what's going on . After a week I about blew my top and demanded a refund because it started to look like I was going to get screwed.

 

He relisted and sold the head and shaft separate . People sometimes just suck.

I see the new auction makes no comment about the dented shafts either. And $400 for 4 718 AP2's is a good sale. I've bought and sold 4-PW for around $700. I wouldn't say $400 is a steal...

I experienced something of the same about 4 years ago. Seller advertised a set of irons as in excellent condition and at a low price. I immediately bought at the Buy-it-Now price.

Seller shortly thereafter notified me that he wanted to return my money because he discovered they were not as advertised. He claimed that his 3 year old son took them and damaged them by playing on concrete with them. I said go ahead and send them, how much damage could a 3 year old do. He replied that they looked like they had been drug behind a car. I said ok, send my refund, and he did.

 

A week later I see the same set relished on ebay, by the same seller. I contacted him and asked what is going on? He said, he had a second set of the same clubs and was selling them. Ha, ha, I called his bluff.....why would you have 2 sets of the same clubs, and sell them a week apart. He obviously lied, and simply found out that he could get a better price than he first advertised. He was a very bad liar.

 

If he would have notified me that he asked a too low price for the first set and wanted to cancel the sale or negotiate, I would have agreed. This man had no honor.

Don’t these people have any friends? That’s what shill bidding is for. The seller gets the price he wants and doesn’t have to relist. If the shill accidentally wins, THEN you cancel the auction due to “damage” and relist.

It is a sh1tter when this sort of thing happens, sellers should definitely get suspended if this sort of thing happens more than once

 

But how can you make a claim, claim for what? Ebay cant make the seller send them to you

Great example of using eBay poorly.

 

A short set of AP2 ‘s with special order unpopular shafts should never be listed auction style. FAR too few potential buyers.

 

Should have been “buy it now” with best offer option. I’m sure the seller panicked when he saw the winning price.

 

Not defending his actions at all, but I understand them. He goofed and freaked out.

 

He could have easily got $100 a pop selling them individually.

You are correct, im not looking for anything else. I left my negative feedback and I do have my money back. I made the claim with eBay so the seller has some consequence of his actions, I had already come to terms that I will never see those clubs.

This happened to me a few times and it always made me angry, so I started looking at prices around the web (such as 2nd swing). I figured out what the general value was for something I was looking to buy, bid under that to save more money (because I could always just get it from the other site if I wanted to). If I won something at a value far below what was listed elsewhere, I just expected the auction to be cancelled somehow.

 

I'm not saying the seller was right, I am just saying it made it easier for me to set expectations.

I had a putter listed on eBay. Buyer makes several offers with a note that says WRX on the last offer. So I go over to WRX, he messages me and then I never hear from him again. His last offer on eBay expired. Complete scum bag.

If anything it should be a warning from eBay about posting fraudulent auctions. Maybe they’ll sweep it under the rug like some of the bigger sellers but an effort should at least be made to protect other buyers.

Exactly. I don’t hope to get the item, I have my money back and I am happy about that. The dispute through eBay is only to see if eBay will suspend his selling privileges or his account. I’m the type of person that doesn’t let things like this effect me, it’s a disappointment, I rant then I let it go. I do however believe people should be held accountable for their idiotic and dishonest behavior.

Exactly. The seller is violating eBay’s terms and should be reported. Especially if he tries to re list them magically with no damage.

 

There’s an element of self-policing to that site. I think the OP did the right thing.

He has an Epic driver listed. Win the auction, pay, and, after you receive it, file a claim that the shaft was damaged (like his claim to you on the auction you won). Since ebay seems to side with buyers, you'll get your money back and he'll have to pay return shipping to him.
