Odd Us Kids local rule

Okay we played in an event this past weekend in a three some and some strange ruling came down. Not against my daughter but her friend. A few tournaments ago not even the first of this season our tournament director placed clocks at different spots for 9 holes at 5 and 9 you are supposed to write down the time or get a pace of play violation.

 

This past event in our threesome it was player a, player b and player c. Player c hasn't played this season yet and probably didn't read the rules sheet. After the round player a and player b write the time of course it wasn't on their score card but their playing partners. The kid go to the scoring table and all is well. But then a few minutes later player b gets a two shot pace of play plenty for not writing down a time on a card. When it was player c failure to do so. Even more so the fact that the scoring people over every detail but this one. Make sure you sign here and here verify each score 5 times over but they don't check this? A lot of us feel this player was used as an example because she a very active kid. Does cartwheels some of the volunteers seem to get annoyed with her. Keep in mind she is 8. How can you write down your own time when you don't have your card. A lot wrong with this process.

 

Is this a BS rule. Seems like it was made up out of thin air. There was no pace issues if anything we had to wait on the people in front of us. Does anyone else local do anything as odd as this? No results were impacted meaning the placements all were in tact but seem to be to be the wrong thing to do here based on a time on a card.

Hmmm. That does seem odd- the penalty seems to be for NOT writing it down on the card, not for an actual slow pace. Never had them enforce any slow play at locals , not saying they shouldn’t but it’s a learning process at the local level, especially in younger age groups like your daughter. Good reminders at the start and occasionally during the round seem to usually fix any issue in my experience. Honestly I never write the times down on the scorecard and it has never been mentioned by any scorer or official- that’s locals all the way up to world championship. I think this more appropriate at higher levels- heck, as I’ve mentioned before the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year at worlds for boys 7 took 3.5 and 3.75 hours respectively (9 holes!) and both round played on same day due to weather on day 2. Never saw or heard anyone warned for pace of play, although I presume the issue was many groups ahead and had a terrible ripple effect they couldn’t recover.

Seems like bs and common sense should’ve prevailed. No person should be dependent on someone else to turn in a valid card and if that person didn’t know the rules then that should be on that person. If the committee didn’t furnish the new player the rules then they shoulder part of the blame too.

Complete and utter BS ruling. At our locals, there is a volunteer that you bring your card to get marked after usually the 4th (or 5th) hole. Then another volunteer to mark your card after the 9th. If there is no volunteer at 4th/5th hole, the person at 9th hole marks both time slots on the card.

Total BS rule I would be looking for another place for my kid to play. Some tournament directors are nuts and have no clue either. Sounds like a butchered version of what I seen at some 2 day tournaments where you check in at the turn and at 18 holes for pace of play. Even that all you need to do is keep up with the group in front.

Should add that pace of play in higher tournaments can be an issue too. I have seen where the whole group is rushed or penalized because someone is a paired with a poor player.

not the case here. Yes in regionals or worlds they normally use cards and its all or nothing in terms of the group. But only one kid penalized based on the time on the card being missing.

That’s crazy. Our tour has two check points and they stamp the scorecard.

Fill out all of the times before you start your round. Doesn't matter if the times are right, just that they're filled out.

Yeah, I emailed the tour director about it and they did 2 time checkpoints during the round the next couple of tourneys but then stopped doing it. Yeah very frustrating. Some kids play slow since they mimic what the pros do, others just treat it as a casual round of golf with no urgency.

I was talking about state tournaments like FSGA and most likely the case at other bigger tournaments. It crazy to worry about pace of play for 9 holes that much in something like US Kids locals. The reason your playing a 9 hole tournament is you know you kid can't play 18 holes and one those reason is they might be a little slow. You pay enough to have a few hours to play too.

 

The kids who get better seem to move along rather nicely when they start to learn to play 9 holes. I also don't expect 18 holes to be quick either it's only when you get to multi-day tournaments that things pick up.

Been paired up multiple times with players who shot in the 70s (9hole).

Also been paired up once with a player who shot 80. Imagine 4 hours for 9 holes, where you're playing in the dark for the last two holes... :swoon:

That is brutal it also something I come to expect with Junior golf. The worst round I ever did was 8 hour round and it we were running out of sunlight during a season ending tournament a few years ago. At that point I didn't care what the scores were I just wanted to go home.

 

I am finding out just not tournaments either we did a practice round last week I think it was like 7 hours. We had traveled to the tournament otherwise I would have bailed on the round. The reason it was taking so long was some kids were hitting multiple balls to the hole. One kid was playing 5 balls to the hole. Complained to marshall and they didn't really care just like getting the extra revenue from everyone.

 

Lesson learned never play a round the day before a multi-day event on a public course that is known to stuff people on the course.

Unless AJGA, always try to avoid a practice round the day before a tournament.

 

Royal St. Cloud is a pretty cool lay out, nevertheless , and a very easy course.
