Why not have fake greens?

Recommended Posts

My home course is a beautiful hilly course with nice views etc... But the course sucks now cause the greens got a disease and tough to putt on! Even the practice greens are no good now....

Why not put in fake greens? There will be very little maintenance needed besides a leaf blower and the perfect roll would be awesome even for pro courses.

I dont know how they would be to hit a ball into them but if they currently suck for hitting shots into I think it would be worthwhile to design a green that would be receptive to shots...

You could make a mediocre course instantly much better with perfect rolls and might be a great long term money saver....

good question, I am sure this topic has been discussed on here before. Obviously there will be people who are very much purists and will be against this. Obviously were not saying every single course should do this as many courses don't need to even consider it because they do well enough financially that it isn't an issue but for munis or an average course that those same people wouldn't be caught dead at I don't see why not. Youre absolutely right in the longterm it will save money and maintenance over a grass green especially for courses who cannot afford it. Especially in harsher climates. I think many of these same courses would benefit from turf tee boxes.

How would they drain?

Proper contouring and drainage surrounding the green, along with drain tiles subsurface.

With synthetic greens, moving hole locations would be impossible. Unless they put multiple holes and had some type of plug sys

That’s exactly what happens. There’s just a cap that locks in, may have been a modification made by the owner, but it just snaps in there’s four locations on his green.

I remember a Par 3 course in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio called the Little Bear. It was designed by Jack Nicklaus with synthetic greens, tees and fairways.

I never played it and often wondered if it was still there.

I think the main problems would be holding shots and getting avid/serious golfers to play there.

It might work at a budget course with low rates.

I have heard of Little Bear but never actually been there.

Based on the online reviews, holding shots is definitely the main issue.

Artificial greens are not cheap, and difficult to maintain. People who purchase artificial greens for their homes quickly find out that it takes a lot of maintenance to maintain them. The heaving of winter freeze and thaw would wreak havoc on them as well. I think the idea has been thought over many times before and courses realize the cons of artificial turf and just keep natural turf because it is easier for the golf courses to maintain.

They'ed probably be as good as the mats you have on driving ranges, fake greens, fake mats. Hit a ball off a mat and you think you can play, try that 3-wood off the turf and see what happens. Fly that 6-iron into that fake green and watch the ball react, never the same.

Here's the answer, sand greens:

http://www.kcur.org/...ssouri#stream/0

Ha, that brings back old memories. I played on couple courses with sand greens in early 1980's. Both of them no longer exists. It was an unique experience, both of them are very low maintenance course.

Harrisonville is only 90 miles away but I don't think play it. But maybe will just for old time's sake.

It still would take too much maintenance, and they still would not settle into place very long. How would you move he's around? They would be a costly pita. So Cals don't understand anyway. lol
