Wilson Duo Professional. new for 2019

Loved the Duo U. I'm a bit skeptical about the Duo P though, think it might be simply a rebadged Duo U. Played the new Project A for this year, and it was great. Loved the feel of it more than anything else, but have to admit, there isn't much between the U, A, and QST.

I have found the there are some differences between the U and A and QST. The U is a bit lighter. I'd love to try the Duo P. But, the matte ball is a real turn off and I don't play a white ball. It's too bad as a 60 compression urethane ball sounds perfect to me.

Agree on two fronts. A 60 compression urethane ball is just right for me as well, and after trying a matte ball for the first time this Fall, absolutely hated it. Can't understand how this idea made it to store shelves.

+1 It still amazes me that the matte ball has become a thing. It collects dirt and does not feel as good as a traditional ball.

They do collect dirt pretty easily. But in terms of feel and cover material there a few exceptions I thought. the Volvik Vivid (2018... not 2017), Superhot Bold and the Vice Pro Soft had a good feel off the clubs and had more of that silicon rubber type feel to the cover. Just seemed like they put more thought and $$’s into the outer layer.

Others I tried including the Duo Optix, Maxfli SoftFli, , Project S And Noodle all felt slick and cheap to me at least cover wise.

Before this ball was launched I commented on Wilson’s Facebook page if the Duo U came in yellow it would be a best seller,

Their response was “stay tuned”

I wish it had been, see the Srixon yellow.

But at $30 im more than willing to give it a go.

My favorite color ball it the Callaway Superhot Bold (Red).

I tried the Vice Pro Soft in Red and the color wasn’t as good. Wish the Callaways were a little cheaper but Red catches my eye against any back drop or color grass so it is great for visibility.

Yes they get a little dirty but usually I lose a ball or 2 per round so not a real issue.

Those Red SuperHot's hurt me eyes when I look at them in the sun!

  • 2 weeks later...

I played 27 holes with this ball this weekend.

Course is soaked, standing water on the fairways, and greens were wet and very bumpy.

Played all 27 with the same ball.

Cover held up pretty well, a couple small scuffs, a little discoloring. Nothing beats the cover of the yellow Srixon Tour SL.

Ball felt really good. I didn't notice anything crazy for distance gains or losses, it's wet and I haven't played in a couple weeks.

Ball was pretty straight though.

Looking forward to playing this ball when it's warm, and sunny. Winter is here....

Where did you buy them? I's not easy finding Wilson balls other than the regular Duo or Duo Spin. Did the ball spin? I have found the Duo U did not spin much for me.

I checked my local DSG. No Wilson at all there.

Amazon seller Golfio has them for $34 shipped.

I got them from a Wilson rep.

Hard to tell about spin, the greens are so soft and wet. Anything just plugs.

Getting brilliant reviews. Same performance as Chrome Soft for a lot less money. Wilson definitely upping their ante...

But, I think Wilson's failure to offer the ball in a traditional finish optic yellow is a strategic error. I'm no sales or marketing specialist, but I think this will represent a sales loss for the ball. Many people--including me--prefer a more visible ball, but matte covers are a non starter for me and many others.

I am sure they have done their research and maybe a matte urethane ball is a good market target as Volvik and Vice seem to be the only competition.

Standard yellow urethane in the $35 market already has QST2 at $30 and ProjectA at $35

This is cheaper than the Volvik and easier to get than the Vice which is frequently out of stock.

I think it’s a great decision by Wilson

Played the Duo Professional today it seems like a great new offering from Wilson. I like it much better than Duo Urethane that I found a littler shorter for my swing. The Duo Pro is long and straight off the tee and enough spin into and around the greens. Will use this winter.

I picked up a box today, but unfortunately it will likely be awhile until I can play them (stupid winter). I saw all the colors and the matte balls are super bright. The colors really pop. To my eye, the colors are much deeper and richer than the DUO Soft or any Volvik product.

How's the feel? In my opinion, after playing Vivid, Superhot and TM Project S - the matte ball has a different (rubbery) feel compared to a traditional ball. Will be going with the QST in yellow. Picked up 2 for 40 at DSG yesterday (2 for 50 and stacked a 10 off coupon - you have to question the cashier as it won't come up).

The feel on shots is maybe a little firmer than the Duo U. I like it especially in winter temps. As for the matte finish, I am not a fan of it as it does feel different and it also seems to pick up more dirt etc. I have both matte and regular finish Duo Pros and like the regular polished finish better.

Ok, cool. Good to know. The lower compression is appealing on a good urethane ball. But, they lost me on the matte finish and I prefer a yellow ball. I made the right choice with the QST.

Still not sure why OEM's insist on the matte finish. Perhaps, it is appealing to younger golfers?

If you prefer yellow, then you made a good choice. I wish the Duo Pro came in non-matte yellow.

The Duo Professional is very good. I played the orange on Friday and I really like how it performed. Plan to make this my golf ball for 2019. This is the best Wilson ball I’ve played.

I agree with this. With the Pro V1 also going to be coming out in yellow this year and the AVX in yellow, there's very little reason to buy a Wilson Duo Pro in standard yellow. Wilson has a year of data on the matte balls with the regular Duo. If they were popular, this gives those players an upgrade path. Also anyone who plays the Callaway Superhot Bold (which I see a lot of) and wants to move to Urethane can move into this ball since Callaway doesn't have that covered. This balls is cheaper than Vivid XT and feels and performs much better than the standard Vivid. Plus, for traditionalists, it still comes in the standard white. I'm sure they could have created a standard yellow, but I bet their entire tooling would have to change and it simply isn't worth it when the number of people who want yellow and won't play the matte isn't very large.
