P790 or pxg 0311 players irons

I was about to pull the trigger on the p790 irons but Given the great pricing that pxg is offering on the gen 1 0311 irons I am now conflicted.

 

Thoughts?

Hit them both, it is a personal decision. I demoed both prior to the reduced PXG pricing and the 790's are now in my bag.

I’ve owned both and sold both. They were very similar in performance for me. 0311 slightly more spin and a little more muted. The PXG should hold their value better and if you qualify through the heroes program they’ll be very similar in pricing if not cheaper for the 0311’s (0311’s were cheaper with SF shafts compared to 790’s when I priced). I sold because I love the new 919f and I like to tinker with clubs. If you can’t demo them, pick the one that suits your eyes the best.

They are both great clubs. I found that the PXG feel a little softer and had more consistency in distance. The p790s feel hotter but when matched for loft go about the same distance and are not as soft feeling. With discounted Gen 1 pricing it's a feel decision.

I agree - hit them both plus the Cobra Fiorged Tec Blacks. I bought the P790s, 2nd were the Cobras, 3rd were the PXGs but well behind the other two for me.

The decision for me came down to offset. The Gen 1 players has noticeably more offset than the 790 so for my eye the comparison was the tour vs 790 and I preferred the performance of the 790

I have P790 and like them so far, but with the new pricing I’ve been thinking about a combo set of 0311xf 5-7, and 0311 8-pw. I think performance is pretty similar but wouldn’t mind a little more help in the longer irons

The 0311P does not have less offset than the 790's though. In fact the 4 and 5 iron actually have 50% more offset than in 0311P vs 790 which was ultimately the deal breaker for me as I liked the rest of the package.

 

4 iron 0311P is 0.22" = 5.59mm vs 790 3.6mm

5 iron 0311P is 0.19" = 4.8mm vs 790 3.3mm

 

They only get close once you are down to the 8 iron

ive only hit the 790s and theyre quite nice. a little too hot for my liking (200y 7iron lol), but theyre definitely nice, and probably 1/3rd the price of the pxgs.

I played the 790’s for half the season. I liked the 5-8 but hated the 9-G. After a PXG fitting hitting them side by side, I sold the 790’s and ordered the PXG’s.

 

As far as cost, if you order the Gen 1 version, they are LESS EXPENSIVE then the 790’s with a much wider choice of shafts without an up charge (especially in graphite).

I can’t speak for the pxg cause I’ve never hit them, but I own the 790s and love them. I actually have a mixed set with the 770s. Probably going to be adding the 760s 8-pw sometime during this offseason.

 

But anyway, personally I would go get fitted. That would get you into what’s best for you

I just made the switch from P790 to PXG 0311. Hit the PXG in Vegas on a end of the season golf trip at South Shore CC. The PXG rep gave me a 0311p with a modus 120 and instantly i feel in love. Got home and ordered a set of Gen1 011 with modus 120s.
