What grip do your kids hold driver or iron?

Recommended Posts

Jealous about those parents who have played golf and coached their kids!!

I have no golf experience, but somehow my son loves the game... Having set up with a few coaches for him in last two years, I notice that each coach tends to make adjustment on my son's grip when they coach him. My son, at 10, kind of settles on neutral grip for now. (From my tennis experience, I change my grip frequently for shot selections during the game. I know how crucial it is in tennis ...)

As I am learning the game my self now, I begin to know the strong, neutral, and weak grip in golf, and I am curious what most juniors do: do you switch from one type of grip to another for shot selections as well? or does your grip actually evolve as you grow up? what might be the best grip for junior? (my son's club swing speed is about 78mph)

The question may have been covered before, but I am new on the forum, and really hope to learn on this specific topic.

Thanks in advance.

It depends on your son's shot pattern. If his shots are always going to the right (for right handed player), then you probably want a stronger grip (generally speaking) and vice versa. I noticed when kids first start playing, they like to hold a very strong grip where the right palm is facing the sky and the thumb is on the side of the grip.

A lot depends on his swing. If you have an instructor this is a question you should be asking and one the first things they address. If your getting private lessons for a 10 year old I would recommend being there when your kid takes lessons and listen in to what is being said. Don't hover and even walk away for a few minutes sometimes. The instructor should talk to you so you understand what the are teaching and can help correct in practice.

Some instructors don't like you there others don't care. I think though it crucial you understand what to look for as well. We have all been there and had no clue about what to look for in a swing. The fact your even asking the question here is a good reason to fire a instructor if you have one. If you don't go find someone.

My sons grip started prett neutral but noticed the other day it is drifting toward the strong side. I feel like a lot of kids start to gravitate toward a stronger grip because they can hit it further. Right or wrong I don’t know (I am far from a PGA instructor) , but have read both sides of the argumen. As others have said, check with the PGA pro.

when you first start out a lot of people and coaches will have you with a strong grip as you get better push you to more neutral. Some will adjust their grip to the shot they are trying to have, but I try to have my keep have a pretty neutral grip.

It all depends on the coach and how they teach.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Thank you all for the replies. This was one of reasons I was jealous of you guys. I always stood by during coaching sessions, but I could not understand the importance of the topic as I only had mini golf experience. I had a blind trust in coaches, and assumed that their interests align with mine, kind of naive here. This is all part of learning curve... Sometime, I really think that some of coaches we met are like doctors, wanting you to feel better, but definitely not fully recovered... so that we can keep paying visit to them... Their interests definitely don't align with mine... :derisive:

I suppose my son will eventually figure it out by himself...

Thanks again.

I think I had a pretty neutral grip when I started. I think at age 10 I'd focus more on having a consistent grip than whether it's weak or strong. I don't know that being strong or weak makes a huge difference at that age. As I got older and could control the ball better, I moved my grip weaker because I wanted to fade the ball easier. Now I'll make small tweaks throughout the year when I want to change, but I try to stay pretty neutral. As long as distance isn't an issue, I wouldn't want to get too strong because I think you lose control. Hope he has fun with it.

Depending where you live a lot guys on here could help with good coaches. If you getting a coach make sure there actually certified. A lot guys work under PGA pros but have not real training on how to teach. I personally like TPI certified coaches . You find them at the link below.
