I golfed Fraserview yesterday and lost 3 balls under leaves.

Sunset at 4:30 is bogus too. At least Vancouver is mild all year. You can golf in rain but not in 100 feet of snow the the East Coast is going to get.

Now becoming a real issue. Our course has planted thousands of new trees in my 40 years of playing so the problem has got a lot worse. Even the fairways have ball snatching areas of leaves. Cheap and battered ammo in the bag.

If they are not in play I get wanting to leave (no pun intended) them be. Way off serving as a back drop or delineating a playing corridor or a particular stunning specimen standing in full splendor is a whole nuther ball of wax. Trees defining the fairway edge is stupid. Trees within 75 feet (conservatively) of areas you intend to be playable turf is asking for trouble.

I find if I aim at a tree in the distance, I miss it.

Five inches of snow yesterday. The club emailed everyone that they're still taking tee times for Saturday. Wishful thinking.

I like trees along the edges to mark fairways. I'll also tolerate the occasional tree in the middle of the fairway. That's the only one we have at our club and it doesn't normally bother me.

 

I actually think it's quite nicely strategic.

 

It comes into play on the second shot of a par 5 but in my case my ball will be back on the ground before it gets there. So various scenarios usually present for me:

 

If my second shot was poor (quite common because you're climbing up out of a gulley) then it's one of:

1)Sneak through on the left (risky - OOB is waiting for a pull).

2)Attempt to go over (no chance of going for the green but a wedge will do it).

3)Cut across to the right - either a wedge or a low punch.

 

If my second shot was good then it's either:

1) Ball rolled under and past - fist in the air :)

2) Ball rolled with slope down to the right - a careful mid-iron to(ward) the green.

3) Ball under tree with no room for a full swing - sad face.

 

For longer hitters the tree usually means a high launched mid-iron to go over which might roll down a bank onto the green for one below GIR or a mid-iron around the tree (fade or draw) with a low chance of one below GIR and if they opt for passing left with a fade a risk of OOB.
