Hands hurt after returning to Golf

Recommended Posts

This is my first full in a couple years because of other injuries. I have been playing pretty much daily, either out on the course or at the range. My arms were sore for the first month or two, and then that went away. But my hands continue to hurt. I started playing again in June.

I have search the forums for other threads, and it seems I'm not alone.

Seems there are a couple options I would be comfortable with, and I just wanted some advice on what others have had success with, because it will take a couple weeks of committing to a plan of action before I see results likely. I have tried stopping for a few days and that did a tiny bit, but it came back after I got back into it.

Obviously taking a couple weeks off is not something I would like to do, but if others have had success doing this and then starting to play again daily with no issues, I'm all ears

I have a set of P730 heads ready to go on whatever shaft and grip I want, so here are my options.

A.just play through the pain. A couple others mentioned that for the first year after getting into Golf, the pain in their hands was there. Then it went away.

B. Try a thicker grip. I have hit an MCC +4 before, and didn't particularly like it, but will be OK trying a softer grip to avoid pain

C. Try a graphite shaft. I worry what this will do to my control, I have read this may be an issue with fast swing speeds. Never tried though.

Thanks in advance!

What grip are you using now? They may be causing the issue and if mid size are comfortable to you go with it.

Here's an anecdotal story as an example. Years ago I tried Winn grips to start the season and within a few weeks my fingers were in constant pain. As soon as I switched back to my previous grip the pain was gone within a week.

Ping G430 LST 10.5* : Ventus Red TR 7S

Titleist TSR2 4W : Tensei 1K Black 85-S

Mizuno CLK 19*: Ventus Blue HB-8S

Srixon ZX Utility #4: Nippon Modus3 125-S

Wilson Staff CB 5-PW : Nippon Modus3 125-S

I'm 29 with carpal tunnel lol, so I have some more PT to do in general. I am doing pt but I don't think the pain is due to carpal tunnel, started pt two months before golf,it was getting better, and then this new pain in pads and knuckles. Visible bruising there first couple months, went away when the forearm pain did.

Played 770s with kbs flt xstiff and lamkin players cord +4 wraps from June to september. Gp z grips +2 after that until a month ago, now utx +1. Only the Zgrips were midsize(dunno if that's even tru but they felt pretty rubbery).

Only time the pain changed was it lessened a bit when bruising lessened.

Hurts when I play. Cause of carpal tunnel hard to tell if it hurts when not playing, but I don't think so.

Hurts when I massage it with pressure.

Out of curiosity. Do your hands hurt while playing? All the time? Only in the morning? Mine are stuff in the knuckle joints and hard to move in the am but loosen up. Don't hurt while playing. More golf == more frequent stiffness and pain. I've been experimenting with grips to see if I can make it better

Lmk how it goes!

Hurts when I play at all times. I walk all the time, so I think adrenaline kicks in and I can soldier thru, but typically hurts when holding club.

Darn, that sounds like more to what's on the surface.

I was going to say exam how your hands are placed on the grip but, after reading through your posts, you have some very serious issue besides carpal tunnel.

The hurting with you hands should go away with the soreness in the arms.

So many possibilities, you'd better have someone check you out. Start with test for allergy then take your physician's advise for other tests.

When my finger joints started to hurt after golf games (64 yo) I went to the SuperStroke mid-size.

They are a soft grip which works well and avoids too much pressure on the grip and my finger joints.

Best of luck!

Man that's a bummer to hurt when playing. Is it a joint pain like deep down in the hand? or a surface pain like a bruise? Can you swing other things without pain? Tried going to batting cages and swinging a baseball bat just to see? Drive some nails with a hammer? Pain while just gripping something that doesn't go away I think I'd head on over to my Primary Care or find a good specialist if you have that option

Cheaper option might be just buy one jumbomax grip and regrip the 7 iron and see if anything changes?

I figured it should go away too with the muscle soreness in arms, but I have been holding out hope that because I am gripping with pressure, the pad/finger stuff is just deep bruises that I continue to aggravate, where the arm was simply weak muscles catching up.

Obviously if this is the case a few weeks off might be the only option. But as every GolfWRXer knows, that's a pretty awful option lol, espescially without knowing it worked for someone else.

Thanks for the advice! I will definitely be seeing a physician other than my physical therapist, if whatever option we come up with here does not work after a couple weeks

Daily golf is not that much a strain on your body parts, many play multiple rounds a day. Not like hitting a thousands range balls a day.

You're young, 29 years old, and your body should recover faster than a senior. Had you been a senior, I would say lay off golf for a week or 10 days but you're young, some underlying issue might exist.

Do you have any known/existing health issue that might cause the bruise in your hands ? The first thing is to check for allergy, might be food borne or something you make contact with ( golf grip- material or solvent , fertilizer and pesticides used on the golf course..... ), second possibility is some health issue preventing your body from healing. That, your physician should order a battery of test, first will be a full spectrum with blood and urine test.

Good luck to you, I hope it is a simple issue of allergic reaction to something like grip solvent.

Feels like a deep bruise. Dunno if I've ever swung a baseball bat lol, but I assume that would hurt. Hammer and nails naw, only affected by carpal tunnel with that.

If I press on my pinky pad/callous area, pain down the outside of my palm(so if I knew anything about the body, I would guess the muscles and stuff around the pinky metatarsal is bruised heavy.

So get a jumbo max on one club just to see if it feels better to swing? Obviously I won't get long term relief from this if I continue playing g with normal set, but ur idea is that if it hurts noticeably less to swing a couple times, maybe I try whol set?

Good thoughts.

I agree I am too young lol.

But I have been telling myself that most people that take two years off arm workouts, then jump back into golf using heavy x stiff shafts and full cords every day for multiple months would get some pretty deep bruises as well. And the most painful areas are the golfing spots(right index knuckle, bottom three finger pads on both hands).

I have had deep bruises that lasted this long..was hoping someone else had this happen. I may pm the guy on the other thread that said he played thru it.

Maybe aerotechs or heavier recoils with like a Winn comfort grip.... Hope it gets better

Thanks for kind words!

Yea it's looking like graphite and big grips after taking two weeks off is my best chance at eliminating other possibilities. Occams razer and all.

After a lifetime of Boxing and an earlier career as a Lobsterman my hands have been brutalized over the years. I have been using a midsize grip and lately the Golfpride CP2. They have done a great job of keeping the pain away. Keeping your hands active and strong with squeezing a stress ball does wonders too.

I don't use a glove and have average sized hands. When I used regular sized grips, my hands were heavily calloused. As the years progressed, I moved up to larger and larger grips. I now use Golf Pride Tour Velvet Jumbos and I don't have any callouses at all. I always suspected that golf grips were too small, and now my hands are telling me that my suspicion was correct.

I use theraputty pretty constantly so my hands are active.

Thanks for your input! So you have pain even if you take time off and come back to it huh? And midsize grips help? Good stuff

I have pain in my hands during certain seasons and especially spring and fall during the big seasonal temp swings/humidity,, Spring time when I ramp up golf I can get some aching in the middle of my hands. It doesnt last long, but if I play a lot it can be sporadic at times. The midsize and just tab it soft grips like the CP2 keep me from having to squeeze too tight. You wouldnt think it would make a big difference but it does.

Ok seems like everybody is suggesting grip switch may do it, and no one seems to complain of loss of control.

I am wary because of my hi swing speed, but will prob be something I can get used to. If Bryson can win with those massive grips, no excuses.

Seems like the consensus is

1. Stop for a few days and let them heal. See how normal swing feels.

2. Try hitting with thick grips, should helpfully solve it

3. Try graphite shaft if grip switch is not enough.

4. Go to the doc if all else fails.

LOL, has a pre-existing carpal tunnel issue (not revealed in OP), hands are bruising from golf, admits has more PT to do (assuming the doctor ordered it) and plays golf anyway, wonders why he hurts and "go to doc, if all else fails" is the last option he is considering.

See the damn doctor.

I go to a doctor for pt twice a week.

I don’t wonder why I hurt, many have felt this pain and it’s pretty clear why it hurts. Which I said. Keep up lol. Doc says she does not think carpal tunnel would affect the recovery time. Why I didn’t mention it.

I play golf anyways cause it’s not debilitating and others have said they played for a year thru the pain, and was able to avoid it completely with equipment changes.

Well, one person said they played thru the pain, hence why I start a thread to get more opinions.

Believe me, hate to see anyone struggling with anything physically and sounds like you are doing what your doc says, just didn't get than impression from a couple of posts, sorry. Nothing worse than nagging injury. Dealing with an elbow issue, and avoided it earlier in the year so as not to mess up a very important golf trip with the family, but finally got to be too much. I'm no hypocrite, but started with my chiro, but resting the left arm meant no golf, no a lot of other stuff and using my right arm too much to shovel food in my mouth. Appointment with a sports medicine specialist/orthopaedic surgeon just after Thanksgiving. He has some vids about the Therabands some folks speak highly of on his site so I figure he maybe less surgery happy than some and tennis elbow isn't necessarily a surgical result. Also see he is into platelet replacement therapy so I may join Stenson in that, who knows, just want a good eval and plan to get better, whatever it is.

Hope things get better.

no worries I could have detailed the carpal tunnel/doc-input bit in my OP, you are right it would have been useful.

Theraputty can potentially help tennis elbow. it worked really well to curtail my carpal symptoms.

Thanks for the kind words man. Hope you feel better as well!

gotta get this under control, playing this often has been great for my game.

I may build the p730's with graphite and thicker grips anyways and play that for a while after taking a break. curious to see if it affects my game a lot.

Lots of graphite is as good as steel in heavier weights. ... don't worry about graphite ... it's not for seniors and whippet like the old days

Do you practice off mats?

Certain steel shafts can be murder on hands and elbows .. ie PX for me

You can also try softer grips like iomic sticky 2.3 .. I do this and add 6 wraps extra of tape

Seems like the consensus is

1. Stop for a few days and let them heal. See how normal swing feels.

2. Try hitting with thick grips, should helpfully solve it

3. Try graphite shaft if grip switch is not enough.

4. Go to the doc if all else fails.

If you do go with a change grips, also have some prosoft inserts installed. They tend to be a bit more effective than the grips (and it certainly wont hurt anything).

For grips, I'd recommend the Lamkin Comfort plus (mid) as a first choice - they are better than the Sonar's. GP CP2's would be the second choice.

If you do go to graphite, you will not have any control issues as long as you get the right shaft - with the right weight and stiffness profile for you're swing. Don't just get whatever 'off the shelf' stock graphite offerings you might find in the local store. They tend to target a different market so could cause problems. If you let us know which steel shafts you are playing that is a good fit, someone can probably make some more specific recommendations for a particular graphite model/flex.

I use 127g x100s so I'm more inclined to change grip first since I'm happy with flight and dispersion, feel like finding shafts that fit will be harder then just getting used to grip.

On that note, went to pga ss today and purchased 3 grips and put them on wedges.

1. excel soft w6 midsize

2.cp2 jumbo

3. Jumbo

max mid

Very surprising results.

First surprising result ..instant difference is pain. Swinging all these against my utx felt effortless and reduced pain. I guess with bruises still fresh I coulda expected utx hardness to impact the bruises more directly. But still nice to swing without hurting, makes me think that it wouldn't hurt to switch purely to see if carpal tunnel is positively affected.

Surprising result number two, I really like the way they feel. The grips fit into my palm while allowing me to keep gripping in fingers. Feels more stable, less shifty.

Last surprising result, going full Bryson lol.

The jumbomax was the winner. Cp2 and excel felt great, but when swung really hard it felt like I could feel the shaft through the excess material, like it compressed way down. The jumbo max not only stayed firm throughout swing, I actually am into how "in the palm" it feels. It's massive lol.

Gonna hit range tomorrow, might stop and get another jumbo for my driver. Would be pretty cool if I got thru it with less pain.

Unless tomorrow goes poorly, gonna be tough to not try jumbos on the full set after I heal up
