TV help needed.....

Warrick

Recommended Posts

Well, after a nice almost 9 year run my Samsung plasma developed a dead pixel line across the screen. I want to cry.....

I have bought 2 TV's since, but for wife and kid, nice but economical. They don't really know, just a big screen.

Coming from plasma, need a good enough refresh rate for sports. I can't have that lag crap, assuming I need at least a 240.

Is OLED the only way to go? Looks like about $1600 for the new 55. How about Samsung QLED, or the higher end Vizio P series.

any help is appreciated, have not TV shopped for myself in a long time.

I assume they don't make plasma anymore?

Thanks

found the new LG OLED 8 series 55 for $1396, thinking about just buying it, but wonder what prices will do over the next week.

Coming from a 50, think 55 will work for me.

I just read more on the OLED burn issue, now am scared to drop that coin.

Think I may just go with a regular old 4k ultra hd. Now, LG, Samsung, Sony......

Can't help you with any advice. I long for the times when buying a 25" Zenith console showed you had arrived. The three or four channels available made it easy to find something to watch.

Good luck on your search.

And as the kid in the family, you were the “remote”, as in dad said, “go change the channel”.

thinking more economical now.

no matter what TV reviews I read, someone always has a complaint, regardless if it is the #1 rated TV.

Honestly man i agree with your last post about just getting a regular 4K ultra HD

I have a 50 inch LG 4K UHD smart TV in my basement that i use mostly for Netflix, the picture is awesome and it cost me like 600$ Canadian.

TV's are dirt cheap now, i don't think the "premium" ones are that much better for the price.

It really depends on how picky you are. Ie. are you a videophile.

I’m hanging on to my Panasonic plasma as long as I can. It’s brilliant.

I also have an LG 4K and it’s great in a bright room, but I can see too many artifacts and flashlight affects at night, and dark rooms.

If I were you and it’s a basement, or dark room I’d go OLED for the individually lit pixels. Essentially the “new and improved” plasma technology.

Just my thoughts.

Samsung has never really let me down. I had one TV die on me earlier this year, literally 3 weeks after getting it, but they did a free warranty repair on it, and it works great now.

You will find people b**** about something with regard to any TV. Watch for high numbers of defective product but subtle things like blacker blacks, and higher refresh rates are really only noticeable if you have something else to compare to (like in the store)

If I were shopping now, I would prioritize screen size, number of connections in the back, whether it has Smart TV capability, and then technology after that. Most of these new TV’s can’t really shine like they’re supposed to because the programming itself isn’t at the right quality.

The one thing that I do question but couldn’t bring myself to buy it last time is the concept of the curved TV. Heard some rave about it and others just say meh. I went flat and safe.

Right now and leading up to the Super Bowl are prime season for TV’s when you’ll see the best deals. Often the TV’s for sale are slight mods of others, where they remove a couple inputs or change some of the internal programming or some such. Also makes it harder to do price matching because they are store specific models.

OMG, this is the worst thing to try and research in the world. Every time I think I found the one I wanted, I try to go find bad reviews, and always do, things like "This is the biggest pile of crap ever made"....lol.

I am driving myself nuts. My biggest worry is dropping $ on the new stuff like OLED, and getting screen burn or something happening right as the warranty expires.

The Vizio M-Series is rated like 3rd on CNET and I can get a 55" for $529 shipped, would not worry as much an can start saving for an OLED in a year or two.

I need to just pick something and buy it soon.

Everything electronic comes with at least a 1yr manufacturing warranty. So worst case you get a year out of it!

Just stop reading reviews and get the one you want. All of these companies swap designers and engineers, and their products are built by the same CM's.

Whether they have product failures or not is usually just bad luck, often not even related to their own design.

Well, looks like everything changed. I just looked into the benefits of using my Costco membership and Costco Citi card, as in the TV will be covered for 6 years between Manufacturer, Costco, Citi, and Square trade (free with TV purchase).

I verified they do not run concurrent. Probably go Samsung QLED now, 55" - $999

Given that you've become addicted to the deep blacks of a plasma, have learned to avoid the behaviors that lead to burn in, and don't have to deal with ambient light, I'd go with OLED.

My understanding is that OLED is no more susceptible to burn in than plasma.

I’ve not had any issues with plasma burn in and I wouldn’t worry about OLED either. They all have some pixel shifting and nothing a screen wash can’t handle.

Don’t get caught up in reviews either. You won’t have a reference screen beside yours to compare in your home, nor other models.

Go with what gets decent reviews from a brand name and you will be fine.

looks like the Samsung QLED is the choice, just debating on 55 ($999), and 65 ($1299). I really need to decide today or tomorrow, don't want them to sell out.

7 year warranty for free is too good to pass on.

the OLED/QLED screens are sexy as hell but I'd rather not spend the extra money when a UHD LED screen is perfectly acceptable to me. It's not like there's a huge amount of 4K content out there and I don't really play modern consoles anymore (still rockin' a PS3, retropie, and actual arcade machines). Our current 47' LG LED tv is ~9 years old and the only reason we're looking to upgrade ourselves is the prices are do damn cheap right now and we could use a bigger size TV that would fit better in our new house. We were kinda stuck on buying a 65" but now that were actually looking and checking stuff out in person at costco and best buy we may have to splurge a little more for a 75" one. Like someone mentioned earlier, I'd rather not have buyers remorse by getting a smaller size

it just seems like so many of those models actually have a true 60hz refresh rate, and that won't work coming from Plasma. I am sure I can search around and find one, but with this warranty thing being 7 years and free, Costco is a no brainer and they don't have an endless selection. I almost grabbed a Vizio M series 65 for $849, but again 60hz refresh.

I a not sure I am even willing to start reading reviews again, went off the edge for a few days. I am just about to pull the trigger on the 65.

Lol., yes interesting that Samsung itself recommends smaller

https://www.samsung....er/ANS00043948/

"For the best viewing experience, a reliable rule of thumb for choosing the best TV size is viewing distance; how far you'll be sitting from the TV under your usual watching conditions. Today's HDTVs offer more detail, so you can sit closer to the television, but not so close that you can see the screen pixels. Of course, you don't want to sit so far away that you miss any of the amazing details. Here's a formula that makes it really simpleViewing distance (in inches) divided by 3 = recommended TV size. For example, if you're usually sitting 10 feet from the TV, that's 120 inches (10 feet x 12 inches). Divide 120 by 3 and the recommended screen size for you is 40 inches (remember, that's the diagonal measurement of the screen)."

We have a 65 4k and sit about 8 feet away, works well.

That's crazy. No way I'm going with a puny 40" TV sitting 10 feet away. I have a 65" Panasonic plasma, and sit 8' away, but could use a 75".

The main reason for going with a 4K TV is not the increased resolution, but rather the HDR (High Dynamic Range). Unless you're sitting a few feet in front of the TV, you won't really notice the improved resolution, but the HDR is the real deal.
