I haven’t heard one person yell “get in the hole” or “ bubbaboui” at the Australian Open. It’s been great to watch. @GeoffShac @chambleebrandel @bhughesgolf @Rod_Morri

Australia has too many good courses to have such small events. Pitty.

I think the "it is too far to travel" is still the main excuse for lack of major names in Australia.

Look at the tennis, how awesome would it be to have something similar :(

Even though it was a major, the Australian Open tennis tournament had weak fields for much of the 1970s and 1980s.

Meanwhile, the golf Australian Open was considered to be on the tier just below the majors and had top players show up every year.

It has the history, it has the prestige, it has more OWGR points than any other tournament on that tour and it's a qualifier for the British Open. It needs a date away from the Race to Dubai finish and the Dunlop Phoenix and the top Australian players to show up. Most importantly of course, it needs a lot more money. Making it a Rolex Series event on the European Tour might be its best shot.

By the mid 80's the Australian Open for tennis became more respected by the top players. It has the advantage over its golf equivalent in that it is a grand slam and the prize money is one of the largest on tour.

Bjorn Borg only played the Australian Open once and didn't even bother with it when he was at the top.

Does anyone know what putter Ancer is using this week? Looks like some kind of wide body Anser style, double shaft, with sole weights. May a custome Artisan? What do you guys know??

Scotty Cameron Select Newport 2 Mallet or a Squareback. Most likely a old Squareback since I don’t see an insert.

Get down there and throw a few Fred, no court will convict you.

Superb play all day from Abraham Ancer including a couple of darts with what I presume was a 4 iron on 16 and 18.

Abraham Ancer cruises to a five shot win and also gets a spot in the British Open.

Dimi Papadatos and Jake McLeod are off to Royal Portrush as well.

Four amateurs wound up in the Top 20.

Ancer has had five Top 10s in his last 12 PGA Tour events and this is by far the biggest win of his career.

  • 2 weeks later...

This was an impressive win for Cam Smith. The kid's a killer with ice water in his veins. I see him with a couple of majors before he's done. He is one cool cat with a Seve-like short game and he plays best when the pressure's on. His girlfriend plays on the Symetra Tour. That should be interesting. Impressive indeed.
