claw grip

I've noticed that tour pros who adopted the claw grip, when taking their putting stance, invariably assume first their former grips (e.g. overlapping), then, just prior to the stroke, change to claw. they don't even rehearse the stroke with the claw. why is that so? why not assume the claw grip right away?

Generally the best putters in the world have always sat the putter down and aimed it with right hand on the club, then put left on and adjusted stance/setup to the aim. So one using the claw grip would then adjust the right hand to whichever variation they use.

 

Tommy Fleetwood certainly uses practice strokes, as does Rose

Now that I think about it, I do the same. Align with a normal right hand grip, grip with the left and then change my right to the claw. Never thought about it, its just a habit.

 

Any practice strokes are done with a normal double overlap before I setup.

I do my 3 practice strokes with the claw (pencil version), then set putter down with right hand to aim face, place left hand on and then position the right in the claw position. Changing to the claw (mid summer) along with installing a counter weighted mid size grip has improved my putting greatly.
