What clubs do you generally chip/pitch with green side?

Norboo

Recommended Posts

I prefer to get the ball rolling like a putt whenever I can. To that end I try and use the PW off the back foot when I can. That said, I will use almost any club to fit my perception of the required shot. To be perfectly honest though, I carry a 60 but almost never โ€œchipโ€ with it. Lob it over or out of a bunker, yes... But hate that much loft for routine stuff around the green.

Generally my 54ยฐ, unless I need to get the ball up fast and stop. Once the greens dry off from the morning dew i mainly play a low pitch and chip and run. Can do everything i need to with my 54

ย

This has typically been my strategy for years and itโ€™s worked well, especially at my home course where I knew how the ball was going to react on the green. I didnโ€™t join my course this past year and just played different courses in the area. In doing so I found that I had better success by using different clubs and went to more of a running shot with less loft.

... When I first started playing I struggled with chipping and pitching like everyone else. An instructor recommended using your LW for every shot around the green and once you became proficient, move on to other clubs an different kinds of shots. Well after year of exhaustive practice sessions, I became so proficient with my LW I never moved on to other clubs.

ย

... I will add while there are certainly advantages to using multiple clubs, the advantage of using just one club is, it takes the changing conditions on different courses out of play. An aggressive one hop and stop is equally effective on slow greens or fast greens. I throw it right at the flag on slow greens with a short hop and dead stop while on fast greens I land a little shorter as one linger hop and stop turns into a hop and trickle a few feet. Of course it takes anomalies in the green or tiers/ridges/slopes out of play as well.

Most used is the 58*

If I want more run the a 45* pw

Running quickly a 7 iron.

ย

Iโ€™ve used every club in the bag but a driver, hybrid chips are handy on occasion, but those are the 3 most common.

I prefer a higher lofted club around the greens.

That way I can aim 5 feet short of the flag and fly it all the way there instead of guessing on how much release I need.

ย

If it's a very tight lie or short sided, i've been known to use my 8 iron.

Anything from a 7 iron through my 58ยฐ.

ย

It has taken me years and years (and many wasted shots) to accept the fact that the lower the trajectory, the better the average result. I don't throw the ball in the air any higher than I am forced to.

Anything from an 8i (36ยฐ) to a 58ยฐ wedge (including putter of course). It all depends upon lie, slope, green speed, etc... .

I use my 54* most of the time and I manipulate the hell out of the face for different trajectories. I've always done that over going to say, an 8i as I feel like I can stay aggressive. I'll use more loft if i'm short sided or in a nasty lie that I need to maintain more speed through, my 58* normally gets that job. After that the 62* is for emergencies, hard bunkers, or silly shots only.

I'll use any club really, longer irons for longer chip shots and the wedges where I need the ball to stop a bit quicker.

ย

I actually don't like relying on too much soon around the green, I prefer the ball to roll like a putt so tend to use lower lofted clubs

If it has to be an aerial attach then 60 or 54. If it's a ground attack then usually 8i.

How does your strategy change depending on lie? Higher lofted out of the rough, lower lofted on tight lies?

Any lie, including tight ones, where you can easily get a club on the back of the ball with a shallow strike allows any club to be used. Basically pick your shot and club and have at it. As the lie worsens the loft and bounce need to increase to extract the ball in a somewhat reliable way. Then it all comes down to carry, slope, and green speed for the type of shot to attempt.

ย

I tend to use more loft out of the rough around the green so I can hit it a bit harder to help with the quality of strike.

ย

With tight lies it depends on what type of shot fits best. If I've got a lot of green to work with / less fringe I'll hit a low chip shot, if it's a shot where the ball needs to stop quickly I'll use a bit more loft.

ย

Although really it depends on what you're comfortable with.

I prefer to use "lower" lofted clubs whenever possible to get a bump and release....instead of a bounce bounce check. So I'll go all the way down to a low 30's loft club, if only a few feet of carry is necessary with a lot of green afterwards

ย

If an average golfer wanted the easiest way to take strokes off their game this is exactly what they would do, but they won't, they will stick to chunking 56 or 60 degree wedges and wasting shots around the green. I never understood the mindset of the average golfer... they could improve their game by doing nothing else than changing their approach to their game between their ears. I guess I always was more proud of shooting a low score than doing what everyone else was doing....
