What clubs do you generally chip/pitch with green side?

I always ride now so, not wanting to have to walk back to the cart, I always take my 3 wedges and my putter - just in case I don't chip it in. :D

I use my SW most of the time but on longer/runout chips I'll use the 50* GW and when I short side myself I'll usually be using the 64*.

Then again, there are times when the distance to the green isn't the only consideration on which club to chip with. Sometimes the lie dictates a different shot that it looks like from "far away", e.g. a short-sided chip may call for a bump into the slope instead of popping up the 64*.

That's why I almost always bring all 3 of them. :)

Whatever is the best club for the situation, but it’ll usually be between 7 iron and lob wedge.

I did once chip and run with my driver on the Old course when I was on the wrong side of the double green on the fourth as a bet with a friend. Was happy to get within 15 foot and take his money!

Guy in my golf group uses a hybrid unless he needs the ball to stop quickly. He is deadly with the club from 30 yards and in. Almost comical to watch some of the shots he pulls off with that thing.

I will use any club necessary to get the ball closest to the hole. Prefer to get the ball on the ground as soon as possible.

Whenever possible I'll use my 50* u wedge. If not then my 56* or 60*.

Years ago I used a 7 iron quite often but for some reason I've gotten away from that shot. I need to re introduce it to my game.

Too many variables to take into account to keep it at 1 or 2 clubs. How much green do I have to work with? Is there slope? If there is slope is it downhill or uphill? Is it wet or dry? Thin lie or nestled in some rough? In the 9 holes I played yesterday I used the following clubs to chip with: 60*, 56*, 52*, 7 iron, 9 iron. In the past I have used all the way up to a hybrid or fairway wood to chip with.

my current partner always uses a hi loft wedge and does pretty well. he plays an air game.

I prefer to start as low as possible, depending on where the ball is sitting and what has to be carried.

Ray Floyd would chip w a 5 iron if the coast was clear and carry it as close to the hole as possible.

keep that in mind.

8i chip and run from open lie, and either a 48*PW or a 54* SW depending on how shaggy the rough is. After a couple of holes, I can usually tell 48* or 54* depending on how much turf resistance I feel.

Putting from off green is iffy, as most greenside turf I play on is fairly scruffy and clumps can knock shot off line. I've been experimenting with a 7i hit with a putting stroke - this pops ball up a couple of inches initially to get it onto the green surface. A 4H can sometimes be used off of moon-crater lies in spring and fall.

Only a handful of courses I play have the closely mown areas around the green. These I can putt on.

Whatever the situation calls for... don't rely on one club over any other....

Yep. Circumstances dictate. I wouldn’t rule out any club, but usually it’ll be a shorter club, 8i-60*

I mostly use my 56 or 60, depending on how much green I have to work with. Sometimes the 50* if I've got some distance to cover and the green is uphill or very slow.

I generally like the idea that you should get it on the ground sooner, and use a club that you don't have to swing hard because you are less likely to skull it over the green, etc. So I definitely don't try to add height to my chips except in extreme short sided "flop" situations. But I have never been able to make chipping with an 8 iron (or similar) work for me. I just can't control the distance nearly as well without some "check" on the ball. I feel like I have to hit it so softly, and I still have no real sense of where it will stop, especially on faster greens. I have no trouble hitting a low running chip with my 50* vokey, so that is as low a loft as I generally use around the green.

Since recently discovering a nearby practice facility (think it's called Golf Driving Range if you're around north austin) with a vast chipping-only area, I've converted to using my pw for the most part. Like, 98% of the time. Kind of a putting stroke. More consistent for me than the sw I used all the time. But I will use the sw if I'm too far from the putting surface. But I can tell which to use as I pull up in the cart. Like carrying the wedge and putter only, especially when it's wet. The facility also has a sizeable short iron area with targets from 50-80, and the range for 100+ and driving. The putting area could be bigger, frankly, but I feel like I'm getting deadly from 8ft in. Been playing mon-fri, and practice sat-sun.

Used to be lob wedge nearly 100% of the time. Now 56 for the most part but have had a ton of success with 9 iron from the fringe lately. I feel I have way better distance control on chip and runs with the 9 than I do 7 or 8. Really use whatever the shot calls for though it's not really cut and dry. 56 definitely most used though.

A friend of mine uses his 8i, sometimes 9i, from 50~60 yards and in. He basically plays bump and run from that distance on courses that were designed for drop and stop. Thing is, he's pretty good at it, and certainly much better than when he was trying to throw a lob wedge up. I've seen him punch an 8i from 60 yards out to land on the green, bite a little, then roll out to 4ft from the cup. More than once.

I have really mainly used my 60*, but I am trying to develop more of a bump and run game and play more chips than pitches.

Honestly, it just depends on the situation. I wish I had some dogmatic system, but for me, wedges are largely based on feel so it depends on the round. My 58 degree gets a lot of play in and around the greens, but I will employ anything above 7 iron (and sometimes hybrid) around the greens depending on the course.

Interesting that no one has mentioned being biased to what they learned on - I grew up playing in Seattle, where it is always wet and doesn't lend too well to bump and run - frequently need to fly everything to the green, which meant hitting a lot of 54* and 60* and not so many 7i-9i bump and runs. This sort of stuck with me, and despite trying to hit more lower shots now that I'm living elsewhere, I will forever be more comfortable throwing it up in the air. I would guess the opposite is true for guys who grew up in warmer/windier climates.

I'm a big believer in the Utley method that all shots are either high or low.

High shots are always a 58L with a vertical shaft (no lean, back or forward) and no change of angle between hamstring and calf is the goal. Want lots of spin.

Low shots vary from putter to 58 with forward lean to 54 m grind to 9 iron. Typically hit without any wrists, just shoulders. Again, no change of angle between right hamstring and calf is the goal for me to control low point. Its very rare I land anything except the 58 on the green. I have a hard time controlling spin and run out hitting an iron that doesn't bounce before the green starts.

It is kind-of a double edged sword. We have huge wind off the gulf most afternoons, and when you block an eight iron into a left to right wind it can end up in some pretty funky places. So if we're clear yeah players who grew up in wind like low to the ground but the catch-22 is that wind usually puts you in spots on your approach where you can't.
