Push Cart or Lighter Carry Bag

Gnucastle

Recommended Posts

Hello, Everyone -

New here and love all the helpful posts I've read so far. Now that I am 40 yrs old and want more exercise, one of my 2019 season goals is to walk the course a lot more. I think this will be a good thing. However, I am a little concerned about the bag on my back for hours - so have been considering buying a nice push/pull cart. Although, I do have a little bit of trepidation and may end up just buying a lighter more comfortable carry bag.

Anyone out there have any suggestions on either side of this fence - if so what brand/model?

I carried a light bag and found it was exhausting, but then I'm almost 30 years your senior. Have been using a push cart and enjoy not having to strip down the bag while still being able to walk. If you get a cart get a good quality one, avoid tube tires and get a push cart not a pull one.

37 y/o in Houston. I use a pushcart (Clicgear 3.5 cart and Sun Mountain XCR bag) with an umbrella for the 9 oppressive months of summer here and gleefully carry (OGIO Wisp or Callaway Hyperlite 1) for the 3 months of fall/spring, skipping most of way. I often get invited to play with groups that do not walk or at courses that are not walkable. Those times are always fun and usually drunk, but I don’t consider it golf. Good on you for making this change.

made the switch to a push cart many years ago.

love the convenience and able to walk eighteen with snack and thermos.

once you have your main bag set up and the right cart, you'll wonder what made you hesitate.

now and then a light bag for a fast nine or practice session will come in handy.

keep one around.

You cite "the course", are you a member at a private club & is the course walker friendly?

If so, check out the posts on minimalist golf - to ease into this, try walking with your current bag and a 7-10 club setup, handful of tees, and just enough balls to cover 9 holes. Stop at the turn and reload if necessary. May not seem like much, but carrying all the extra crap we usually do adds up over the course of 4+ hours.

If you can't get your head around that, no worries, try a pushcart & see if that works for you.

PS: If you are looking for a lightweight bag to carry, Jones may be still running their Black Friday promotion. Pretty big discounts.

... I will always remember what the Orthopedic surgeon that performed the 2 operations on my back told me when I asked what he thought of carrying a bag with 2 shoulder straps "I love golfers carrying their bags. It will put my 3 kids through college". He said it is a terrible idea to carry, as it is impossible to keep your spine in proper alignment. He told me some will carry their whole lives and never have an obvious problem, but they are the exceptions. Personally I have used a motorized remote cart since the 90's and it is a little like having a silent caddy.

I’m a walker and prefer a carry bag. For me the push cart can get a little cumbersome pushing up hills and around greens. I don’t really find it much easier.

Same here. I have several carts but I prefer to carry my bag. I have a Sun Mountain four5 and find it very easy on the shoulders and back. I like the fact I can take a direct line to my ball most of the time when with a cart alot of times I have to take a longer walk around things with the cart. My favorite course has alot of small creeks and ditches that I can jump over carrying my bag. I wouldn't be dragging a cart through that kind of stuff and would have to walk around it.

Most of the weight of your bag is not from the bag itself, it is from everything in the bag... so if you want a lighter bag to make carrying easier on yourself, you should take out as much stuff as possible, especially golf balls. But, ultimately, I'd say go for the push cart if you want to get exercise, but save wear and tear on your body.

Push cart. All day.

Many folks like the nostalgia of carrying, but it's just not worth the extra wear and tear on the back and body. My home course has a ton of elevation change and pushing can be a chore at times, but it's really no worse than carrying for the most part. The lack of wear and tear and being able to take more gear when necessary are positives that far outweigh any negatives for me.

Yup, both. Just make sure your light weight bag has the support and rigidity to be used on a push cart. A light bag is nice for every application. From the garage to the car. From the car to the range. Just pushing a lighter cart makes a difference. And if you want to carry for a quick 9 holes, no changing bags...

I have both. Haven’t used the push cart for a couple of years (admittedly I ride most rounds so not having used it for a couple years isn’t as big a deal as it sounds). But I still prefer to carry when I walk. I find it easier to be able to just go where I want with the bag.

I will say though if it’s hot out and I would need to carry extra water I would go pushcart. Pushcart also with the very real advantage of not having to dump all the extra stuff out of the bag.

I’m about your age (42) and I’ve tried them all. Push cart, electric cart and light bag. I prefer light bag (especially my Vessel Sunday bag) the most. One strap so simple.

I haven't carried in over 15 years and if I had to I wouldn't play as much. Push carts are the way to go hands down.

Lots of great ideas. Thank you! Think I'll stay with the bag I have now (Titleist Players 5 - 2017). I live in the Bay Area of CA so most of the courses are walkable year round, with the exception of a couple and those I'll ride. I'm sure there will be some fatigue to deal with either way (carry or push) if you aren't used to walking more than a couple rounds a year anyhow. What I am looking for is a cart that is easy setup/takedown and an iPhone holder would be great since I use U-Swing app for GPS - and of course the drink holder.

Kind of an oxymoron advice?

Golf isn’t good for a bad back period, or any other sport.

the golf swing kind of already jacks up your back, so why put it through even extra stress by carrying? i walk 95% of my rounds and i used to exclusively carry, but since i switched to the push cart a few years ago, i wish i went to it earlier. easier on my back for sure and i feel more energized at the end of round, enabling me to finish off rounds better.
