Shadow Creek?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure there is another thread somewhere, but after "The Match" I was curious to find out what people who have played it think of it.

This course has always had some allure to me...mainly due to the cost (to build and play), and initially at least, the exclusivity...when it opened it was essentially Steve Wynn's private course...for buddies, high rollers and VIPs. Nearly impossible to get onto unless you were a whale.

I’m curious also. Does the $500 fee include the caddie fee, or is that an extra charge? (I’ve probably read in here before, but can’t remember).

I’ll probably get called out anyway for asking a question, like in the match thread. Instead of learning the internet and asking ESPN.

I cut this from their website.

Your entry to Shadow Creek begins when you register as a guest of an MGM Resorts International® destination - the finest resorts Las Vegas has to offer. A private limousine will transport you to and from your appointment and upon arrival, your personal caddie will greet and guide you through a golfing experience you will never forget.

Shadow Creek is awesome - first class service and course all the way. Even though it is public, there is no guarantee that you will get to play if you don’t work some connections (you also have to stay at an MGM resort). My understanding is that very few rounds are actually played there even compared to many privates and especially true when compared to the likes of Pinehurst No. 2, Pebble, etc. In fact, the day I was there I played as a single and my understanding was that only 3 other groups were allowed to play the whole day and they made an special accommodation for me to play on very short notice (I pulled a string). Note I played in less than 3 hours (vs the typical 5 or so at other top publics).

Round is $500 and includes caddie and luxury cart but not caddie gratuity (caddie rides on back of cart).

The best parts about the experience are the service and the crazy visual contrast between the extreme green course conditions and the high desert mountains in the background.

I cannot say enough about the service (as good or better than the top privates I have played). For example, my caddie told me that I could have anything I wanted at anytime - they would just bring it to me in the middle of the course, locker room, etc. Also, the waitress at the restaurant simply asked me what I wanted and to order anything I wanted (no menu) and they obliged with a perfect breakfast order. Finally, you are not allowed to drive to the course - you have to be picked up via limo/suv.

The course is fantastic with a great variety of holes. Holes 15-18 are right up there with the best closing holes in golf. Also, I loved watching the air force jets - everything from A10s to F22s fly low overhead during the round.

When you say they'll bring you anything...is that included in the $500? Surely not...

I was not charged for anything I consumed while I was one the course (however, I did pay for my meal in the clubhouse). Keep in mind that the purpose of the course is truely to wine and dine VIPs and High Rollers and thus I am pretty sure “anything goes” for those on the course (it is Vegas after all). My caddie had some eye opening stories about on course requests and some serious bets that he had witnessed by some very well known people.

Thanks..Finally someone who responded to my OP

From what you describe, it sounds sort of like my experience at Sherwood CC about 10 years ago. Course was totally empty, as was the clubhouse...felt haunted almost. Service was superb, and we played in well under 4 hours.

I don't really care about service, food or the clubhouse...especially in a city like Vegas which has great restaurants, and I'm usually too hungover to want to eat anything but greasy food before dinner.

And spending the $500 on golf will probably save you $$$ as it will keep you away from the tables, blow and hookers!

I've played there twice. 2nd time was about two years ago. I was a guest of MGM VP so can't comment on costs etc... as didn't pay for anything.

Course was immaculate. As good as any modern course I've stepped foot on. Service was 10/10. As an example, our caddie had spent 6 years on the PGA tour for a top 100 player. He was now semi-retired but said the money was almost as good at Shadow plus he no longer had to worry about travel, missed cuts etc...

It is certainly not as exclusive as it once was. A lot changed when Steve Wynn left MGM and set up his own course again at the Wynn. The only thing I have experienced even close to Shadow Creek was Queenwood in the UK.

Just try to spend enough to get a few free drinks. How much fun would that be though, at the table with those two.

Now granted to get an invite I know you have to be donating/playing pretty heavily at the tables but for $500 bucks I think this is a bargain, you look at some public options Pebble $495 Per Round, Whistling Straits $425 a round, Pinehurst #2 $415 a round. The place is intriguing but when I first heard the price I was not taken back one bit.

it's not worth $500 AND a mandatory stay at MGM which IMHO is one of the worst rooms to stay in on the strip.

does it feel exclusive? of course. Is it exclusive? nope. nada. you're paying for a forest in the middle of a desert. paiuteapalooze and all you can eat buffet at the bellagio is just as good or if you want to spice up your life add the unlimited mimosa at the wynn. thank me later.

This statement makes zero sense to me.

You do realize the requirment is to stay at an MGM property and not the MGM hotel right? Those are actually two different things. There are @ a half dozen MGM properties you cant stay at - if not more - each probably with 15-20 room categories to chose from.

Nice rant though. Not based on fact unfortunately.

Not a rant. Our ticket through was based on our stay there. We had one of those suite which was god awful. One of the worst in comparison to bellagio and venetians which was around the corner but worlds apart.

They can call the concierge themselves and ask. That's how we were literally forced to stay at that dump.

I still dont understand your story but I'm OK with that. I made a reservation at Bellagio, called them up and they booked the tee time. It could not have been easier. Not sure how you got forced to stay at MGM but I'm fine with not knowing at this point.

From what I have seen and read that course more or less sums up everything I don't like about the game.

If I had "real" money, I would spend a season driving around north america, in my Maz, playing these types of courses.

I don't have real money, so I play a muni and drive a honda civic.

I like to play golf

well we got suckered into staying in a purple velvet suite that felt like a throwback from the 70s
