What are the benefits of the freezer drill? I've seen GG use it a few times.

Rythem in the swing

Developing personal feel

Those are the big two, but it really shows cause and effect really good as well. When you create "this motion" in your backswing and then hit the ball, what do you get, straighter shot.

I will use it alot to teach length of swing with wedges. All i want my golfers thinking about is swinging the club to point a to point b

Point A top of their backswing

Point B somewhere past the golf ball (should be equal as their backswing if they have perfect rythem)

So a freezer can help them learn to FEEL point a

I use it to work on downswing mechanics, much easier IMO to focus on a downswing thought when you’re paused at the top of your swing. For instance I’ve been working on adding left wrist flexion/right wrist bend in transition and by pausing at the top it’s easier for me to ingrain then making a continuous swing

The freezer is great at isolating positions in the swing to help you develop a feel for what motions you want to create. Also, it makes it more difficult to make compensations to make contact. You have to do a lot of things right in order to make solid contact.

If you struggle, try making a downswing with what feels like 25% effort and see if that helps. The better you get, the more speed you can add.

Helps a lot with transition. Gives your body and brain time to make the moves you want to make in transition and slowly, over time, you can start to make that your transition in your 'real swing.'

I have always avoided this drill because it's hard and makes me feel foolish. Decided to give it a fair go in my last practice session since I need to work on legwork/pivot, but also want to improve the takeaway and position at the top. I found that that 9 to 3's or even smaller swings, along with slo-mo work, just weren't having much impact on my swing at regular speeds, even after 3 weeks of pretty steady work.

Ended up putting an hour in with just an 8 iron. Still used slow rehearsals. Then step in, focus on the takeway, and pause. Start over if the bs was bs. When happy, turn my focus to the leg work, and finish the swing.

For the first 20 minutes or so, the ball was going all over the place, and I was hitting the mat harder than the ball. But the strike eventually improved, the starting lines got tighter, and I started to get video evidence that the changes I want are actually showing up in the swing. After a full hour, I let myself step in and hit two shots. They were well struck on a nice line, and my phone camera showed some real improvement. I actually did a little happy dance and made a guy a few stalls down the line chuckle.

Continued on with driver for about a half hour, but was getting too burned out mentally, so had to quit. Driver was, surprisingly, not as hard as I expected. Only put one idiot mark on the club.

I'm converted. This is going to be the go to drill for the rest of this winter off season for me.

Second session focusing almost exclusively on freezers, but this time with 6 and 4 iron. Started just like the last time -- several pretty embarrassing shots. But it took less time to feel comfortable.

This is 4 iron DTL near the end of the session. Not exactly nailing my positions by any means, but a definite improvement over where I started.

Is anyone doing freezers with the AMG fall forward type transition move? It seems incompatible both in theory and practice or have you broken it up somehow?

I think the freezer drill is a great idea, I use to do it, but if you're looking for a more dynamic pressure shift particularly where backswing is half over and downswing has half started by P3, it seems counter-intuitive.

Maybe you can freeze at p3 and go from there. I’ve tried it briefly and it’s really hard for me to start to shift weight to the front foot and complete my swing at the same time. Obviously with all the data we know that is what happens but it seems hard to do thus far.

This is my conflict with it, too. However, I am figuring out how to shallow the shaft which takes a little extra time - when I create pressure quickly it delivers more speed but I am steep and left.

So my theory is, get a better sense of the shallowing motion then re-integrate the pressure. This probably requires more separation of lower from upper body than I am used to....

Freezer seems to me to be a bad choice if you're working on a "more dynamic pressure shift" -- it's the opposite of dynamic. Not all drills for all problems/techniques.

I am working on better legwork (left knee work out while maintaining or deepening a squat), but I also want my backswing to put me in a better position to start the transition. I can work on those things in isolation (and I do), but the freezer allows me to begin integrating those two things. Not perfect, but way better at this point than trying to focus two places at once.

That said, there's nothing to stop you from doing the pause after you've completed that dynamic shift. Or pause at P3 before the shift. Or both.

Why can't I do it?

What exactly do you mean? You can't pause/stop at top or you don't hit the ball well/at all after pausing?

Those that power their swing with the upper body can't do it, at least not well. That's why it's such a great drill. It teaches you to lead with the lower body IMO.

I wish that was the case...I struggle with the upper body, but can freeze all day long! :superman2:
