San Antonio Golf - Bachelor Party

Recommended Posts

Going to San Antonio for my bachelor party and need some course recommendations. So far I've looked at: The Bandit, TPC, La Cantera, Hyatt Hill Country, Cedar Creek, The Quarry.

Any others? Out of those listed above which would you choose? I'm playing to an 8 at the moment, and my best man is about a 12, but all the rest are just "for fun" golfers. We will have around 16 guys going.

Thank you in advance for your help!

There are two courses on the TPC San Antonio Resort. The one that hosts the PGA tournament is TOUGH, while the other one is a little more friendly. La Cantera is a fun course also. Fairly tough as well with lots of elevation changes. Really challenging and fun course. Those are the only ones I have experience with.

Really depends on where you are staying how much you want to spend and when. DM me I used to live there so can def point you in the right direction.

It said you could not receive DM's?

We're not looking for anything super expensive, but probably something between $50-100 per person. We're most likely going to stay in an AirBnb close to downtown but willing to drive up to 30 minutes or so to a good course.

I live in SA.

TPC has 2 courses. Both are great. Not $50-$100. More $150+

La Cantera has 2 courses. Palmer course is my go-to for scenic views of SA. Closer to $100 depending on times and dates.

Hyatt Hill Country has 3x nines. They are all fun imo. This would fits the $50-$100 stated budget and are nice courses.

Quarry is a unique course. Front 9 is wide open with penal native grass roughs and hazards. Back 9 is laid out inside an old quarry. I love it. Fits your budget. I would say it’s a must-see.

Bandit is out of town in NB. Could be 20mins-1.5 hrs away depending where you’re staying. It is a tough course but nice and scenic. Fits your budget.

Cedar Creek is a San Antonio muni course that is next door to La Cantera Palmer and has some nice views too! The conditions are usually fairly good as well but their greens can be slow at times. Definitely in your budget and a good choice for a budget hill country experience.

Other courses you could get in your budget that are great and within an hour of downtown SA:

Brackenridge Park: 1916 Tillinghast design. Tight parkland style course with a lot of history and always in good shape.

Canyon Springs: solid hill country course. Always good shape.

Silverhorn: less press about this course but I like it and it’s always in good shape

Vaaler Creek: a hidden gem across the entire state. A little out of town but absolutely gorgeous and a very fun course. Would play it if you can make the trek up 281.

Tapatio Springs: A nice hill country course in Boerne. There is a little resort there too. No clubhouse since it’s being rebuilt after a fire burned it down.

So you only have 2 golfers and the rest could take it or leave it. Why wouldn't you go to a place like TopGolf? You're all in one group, can drink and eat however much you like and those that aren't really up for 5 hrs on the course, will have a great time too.

I second everything J-Bird said but other then the Marriot courses ( I haven’t played those) Cedar Creek is probably the toughest course for a first timer and may not be enjoyable for the other golfers in your group. Lots of uneven/hanging lies and large multi-tiered greens.

Hey JBird have you heard they might close down the Palmer course. I have a buddy who plays out there a lot and a worker told him the Ca. Company that owns the Rsoort is thinking of selling it off.

If they sell the Palmer, it's a huge mistake. The resort course is just a glorified muni track. Anyone I know who has ever decided to stay at La Cantera always mentions playing the Palmer Course, not the resort course. Based on some of the decisions made in remodeling the entire resort complex over the last few years, it wouldn't surprise me if they did dump it to recoop some cash. High expectations, low returns due to bad management and customer service.

Glorified muni is a little harsh, its still a nice track and has some sweet holes. It ain't Riverside or Olmos Basin lol

i didn’t see a rec for The Republic in south SA, so I’ll give one. Great layout in your budget, always in good shape

If you have one serious golfer and the rest are just for fun golfers, than La Cantera Resort course would be my top pick. Wide at times with some trouble, the 12 will be able to score and the just for fun guys won't be in the junk all day. The quarry would be my next pick along those same lines. I have played the Bandit a couple times with some less interested golfer and they've enjoyed it both times. If you want a challenge then the TPC courses or Palmer course at La Cantera, but the just for fun golfer won't be having too much fun.

How many rounds are y'all wanting to play?

And have fun a the river walk, as there's not anything else worth going to for a bachelor party if you know what I mean.

Also hit up Chama Guacha (spelling?) Brazilian steak house Friday for lunch if you can. May not still be, but it was like half price for lunch on Friday. Well worth it.

I concur with the above that if you go to La Cantera, the Resort course will be more fun for everybody in your group as the Palmer is a very tough and unforgiving test.

The Bandit and Republic would also be good choices with relatively reasonable rates.

I've lived here for 8 years now and have played all but the Dominion and Cordillera. My favorites are as follows (but not in this order)

Brackenridge - muni with an incredible history

Republic - great layout and is always in great condition

The Quarry - very unique setting and incredibly different 9's

Cedar Creek - million dollar views for a muni price tag

TPC Oaks - tough layout that challenges the best of players, especially if the wind is blowing

The only downsides to Brack and Cedar, is that they will be very busy courses during peak times. I have played many a 5+ hour round at Cedar

I never have slow rounds at Brack but Cedar absolutely on peak times. it is a hard golf course and people are always looking for balls

This is why I don’t bring new golfers to Cedar....it will tear you up.

Even if you keep the ball in the fairway the hanging lies and multi-tiered greens can be tough.
