Boy, it appears the shaft broke at the grip on the way down and he hit the ground pretty hard.

 

Missed the ball completely. It was ugly.

With no driver, he is now asking if he can lower the tee height to hit his 3 wood.

Yeah just saw this. Funny I think it was Ogilvy (not sure) who was ridiculing initial ruling about how he has to keep ball on tee and not lower the ball to accommodate 3 wood lol... Gotta play it as it's perched Dude.

I think Ogilvy has a point that it is silly that he can't lower the ball to hit with his 3 wood as it is in play sitting on top of the tee.

Rules are rules, but equipment breaking during the round should be penalty enough.

At q school, 1st stage, in 2003 I think, my 3 wood shaft splintered in the middle of my downswing on the 10th hole at Dayton Valley. It went about 210 yards and like 40 yards left, almost out of bounds. Can’t imagine a total whiff. God that sucks.

I believe he stated he wiffed on purpose to avoid injury.

All kidding aside that is a tough break and can impact you mentally. My hubby was never the same skier after his binding broke on a steep slope. Rough, painful fall and total yard sale. He never skied with the same commitment after that.

I had a 3 w head fly off into a pond at a Canadian Mid Am 6 years or so back, out West in BC

 

I was stunned as I didn't track the ball but rather the club head

 

The shot still went 230 down the fairway though I never saw it

 

Old Ping TiSi tec fwy 12* ... I still have the head ... she was as long as my driver back in the day

 

Marshall got it out of the pond amazingly ... and a rules official went to my rental car for a strong hybrid

So it sounds like they are saying that Senden missed the ball on purpose after the shaft broke, but because he passed through the ball, it counted. They noted this was different than when Tiger stops his swing because he does so before passing through the ball.

 

But how is this any different than what Kevin Na was doing years ago at the Players? He was passing through the ball but not penalized. This whole thing was so bizarre.

Agreed. But in the end it’s about intent and at times rulings do come down to the whims of an official. Of course he’s welcome to ask for a second opinion.
