Tiger and Phil's side bets....

LongWayToGo

Recommended Posts

If you watched the entire match as I did, you heard Phil and Tiger making side bets as they went along. Does anyone think those 6 figure side bets were real? Or were they for the cameras? Assuming Phil and Tiger have 200k readily available and liquid, do you really think either of them were actually willing to pony that much dough up on a single hole for a side bet?

I’m pretty sure there was an agreed side bet “pot”. I guess when you’ve made $88m and $125m in prize money alone, you can afford $200k here and there, even if Elin took a pretty large chunk of it.

Side bets go to their charities. Tax deduction. Also based on their worth, those bets are proportionately small.

I suspect the sponsorship deal will have provided for a pool of side bets as a player "expense". Anything to raise the interest in the match which translates into betting activity.

That's also the reason I suspect Tiger and Phil both conceded putts that you wouldn't expect on 18 and 20 to keep the bets coming in on a match that otherwise didn't deliver as a golfing spectacle.

I believe things will be different in the next go around as they would have learned some great lessons from this event. The BR, reporter should have been walking side by side with either of them, for every walk up to their 2nd shots in order to "stir" the pot. Because these guys want to win, they won't be thinking about drumming up conversation to keep the viewers more engaged. They will need someone who can initiate the bets, trash talk, etc.. Maybe incorporate some sort of lottery on every par 3, where the 2 competitors draw out of a hat, in regards to what the challenge entails for that particular hole.

This will only get better over the years and I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday.... even though my pockets are tad bit lighter this morning.. :)

They got away with the fact it went 22 holes to save the event. Tiger wasnt interested in side betting because he himself (and he knows this) is enough to keep eyes glued to televisions. There needs to be a 3rd party in there spending each others money. An announcer basically calling out situations live. They are walking up to a shot. Phil, if you can get this ball inside Tiger's ball which is 12 ft away, you win 100K. Tiger, you will have the opportunity to take that 100K back if you make your putt. Score on the hole and who wins is irrelevant to this challenge.

You have got to have every freaking hole made to be more interesting. Otherwise, this should.be broadcast on ABC.

Couldn't agree more. The danger if a 2 man field is 2 cold players, which we saw yesterday. Add Barkley to the twosome with the ability to trash talk and throw in challenges suited to the situation - up and down from here is $100k. It would've been more entertaining than we saw.

Of course, a mic'd up Tuesday morning "game" with these two would be FAR more interesting - especially if neither realized they were mic'd up. I promise you, there is far more trash talking and risk taking in those games than we saw yesterday.

There was a sign/standard bearer showing the side bets tally and it was labeled "Money to Charity" or something to that affect. With the dollar amounts raised next to each guy's name.

They already give to these charities as it is, and they are still going to be net positive in their own wallet after this event (after the few hundred thousand going to charity).

Tiger did offer Phil a side bet at one point and Phil turned it down because he was 40 yards back of Tiger in the fairway. I think once the match got to the last 7 or so holes they both got more serious about winning and not on making side bets.

I read an article a few days prior to the match in regards to how the PGA Tour was looking forward to examine the data collected in regards to "Sports Betting" aspect of the match. I believe the change in Sports Gambling across the US was a catalyst for this event to take place and was an excellent pilot for the PGA T, to figure how to position themselves for a future "win". The data gathered from all the sports books, etc, will be invaluable for the Tour and it's future gambling revenue.

200 Grand for these two guy really is nothing much than a $20 to me, Sure they have it liquid somewhere, probably the nearest bank.

apparently PGA Tour has something to do with limited (800k total) side bet actions!! WTF

"Some of that had to do with the limited number of “challenges” each player was allowed to offer. Sources close to the event said that was dictated by the PGA Tour, which limited the duo to just four side bets, which totaled $800,000 and went to various charities."

Tiger didn't seem that interested in the side bets. Kind of disappointing.

Should have paid immediately in cash. The spectacle of Phil stuffing $200K in Tiger's golf bag, after failing to make birdie on the first hole, would have made those side bets more real.

It's Vegas. If they were not on TV it would have been casino chips exchanged in the grill room afterwards.

Huh.

I guess the PGA Tour doesn't want to sully their brand with the image of being..... too charitable?

So, if Tiger or Phil felt they had a 5th bet they wanted to make, some charity lost out on the money?

I'm trying hard to understand their thinking.

I was disappointed there weren't more side bets and many that they did wager on were unlikely to ever happen.

Yeah that was chicken 5hit when they made bets that didnt gaurantee a winner like making it from fairway was the dumbest even for a billion...phil missed green and Tiger was a mile from hole. What do they think were that stupid! Why not go closest to for $1mill....lost respect for Phils reputation of being a big time better...couple chickens

Can't figure how to like my own posts

Why did this event need to be sanctioned by the Tour?

Because it was in America and in America the PGA Tour is golf, just ask the PGA of America.

It made no sense, the PGA Tour got involved late and based on what I heard on Hanks show they got very nervous about the gambling so they instructed Phil and Tiger the money would have to go to charity and the bets had to be non-typical golf bets. That's why we didn't see any bets on whether or not they could make or miss a putt. It ruined the entire betting aspect of the event and likely impacted their interaction and smack talk. They need to get this worked out if there is a next time.
