What simple swing feels/thoughts work for YOU

My main feel is straight right arm on the backswing

You are a lefty I assume?

Likely a righty! This is my thought on the backswing...on the downswing, I try to send my left shoulder off my chin.

Depends on where my swing is. My goal is to not have thoughts. I can do it for periods of time, but eventually some things get out of whack and I need to work on maintenance and that requires some swing thoughts until I can get the swing back to where I want it.

For now, I'm working on feeling like the shaft gets perpendicular to the ground at p3 and then trying to rotate while getting my left knee to flex as soon and as much as possible by p5.

I have tried a few times over the years to have zero swing thoughts, each time with disastrous results. I have to have 1 or 2 keys or I'm all over the place.

Great stuff everyone. We are getting plenty of ones for the list and from here on out, I am going to start cherry picking and perhaps shorting and making the list easier to read.

I feel like we are missing a few more good swing thoughts or feels that require an imagination. I especially like to read and try those ones as they kind of kill more birds with one stone. Like the swinging a hammer and hitting a nail at an angle one, chopping wood, dragging a wet towel around your body, things like that. If anyone has a unique one especially, don't be afraid to share it!

Swing hard in case you hit it!

Same for me. Almost a lost or exposed feeling trying to swing without one.

Yep. If I wasnt focused on 1 or 2 keys then it allowed my mind to be somewhere else, almost blank minded.

Target is still the primary thing in my mind. But going from preshot target identification, to standing over the ball, my mind shifts from target to how to hit the target. Standing over the ball I'm thinking swing key but I check target twice. When I pull the trigger I have a blend of target and swing key in my mind. Works well for me...

I like to feel the swing starts with my left shoulder.

After that it's a little about the path of the takeaway and then how much I'm releasing my hands though impact.

If I'm playing poorly I need to think about keeping the takeaway nice and wide and slow and keeping my body still for a long time so that it doesn't fire though without giving my arms a chance to keep up with it.

mine are very simple....

grip... right hand controlled by thumb and index , keeps my right hand active and on the club,

backswing - start with my core , arms follow connected.

finish depends on shot shape,

thats it...if i stay connected going back and my right hand stays on the club im good... (right hand tends to come off as im left hand dominant and club doesnt release when this happens)

I think I have a pretty good list of things up thanks to all that have contributed. If anyone has any really imaginative ones they use I would be interested to read about them. Don't be afraid of it sounding silly or anything, no judging here, just curious about some of the more "out there" feels and thoughts people might have especially now that we have covered most of the more tangible body part related feels.

  • 1 month later...

Right elbow to the top of my belt/right hip into impact.

My miss is a push or hook. I was told by the guy I was seeing that it was because I was out to in and flipped my hands at the bottom to attempt to right the ship and prevent the big slice. If my timing was off at the bottom it resulted in the push or snapper, the old two-way miss.

Keeping that right elbow feeling attached has resulted in no duck hooks and a controllable fade. It kind of starts left of center then comes back across the center line 5-10 yards. I can play with that.

The other swing thought/vision I try to do is aim to hit an imaginary ball off the deck that is approximately 4-5" inches behind my teed up ball. Helps me have an upward angle of attack. Otherwise I smother it with that snappity wrist action I mention above.

Man, if I had this many swing thoughts rolling around in my head I could never take the club back.

Always, on every shot, step behind the ball, pick a specific target, then an intermediate in front of the ball. Put the clubhead down, align to the intermediate target, completely relax, focusing on the target, make a slow, full body turn letting my arms come along for the ride, swing back through, completing the turn. Admire the ball flight, rinse, repeat.

This list wasn't meant to give anyone a bunch of swing thoughts to have in their head, but give them ones to try. Everyone is different and sometimes a single thought or image in their head helps them swing the same and more correct each time. I only have one thought in my head at any one time. Some work for me better than others and personally, I am always looking for one that click and is reliable.

I found solice in doing everything that Jason Dufner does... I know, I know, some find it boring and maybe OCD but for me I always fall back on it...

I sat down on Monday night with a coffee and went through all my rounds since April 2016. Pretty much when I started taking the lessons.

For some reason I always seem to go away from my waggle when working on stuff after lessons.

I get mechanical, trying to put the club and my body into certain positions that I find hard to do.. I loose all natural feel and instinct.

Every round I have played I keep a record of on hole19. I always write a comment on how I played and what I did cominyinyo the round and why I missed on the bad shots..

Every round I shot in the 80's It was before and after the lessons. Every round d from 71-78 was when I went back to my dufner swing and switched off my brain and played by feel.. no positions, no tension, all automatic.

So I guess what I'm saying is for me my feels are to stay really loose over the ball, I have a slight caddy drag that stops me from whipping the club inside to early, and I don't worry about the backswing positions.

From the top I just let everything falls through the ball and finish in balance. What usually transpires is shallow divots, more compression, less effort, fluidity, and a complete finish..

I'm at the point now where I don't care what it looks like. It works for me and it's staying..

I just wish that the pros I went to addressed my Early Extension, and my out to in path before they went nuts changing stuff that may not have needed changing...
