What are they driving? Cars of the Tour

Even if you can afford it what's the point of like 35 cars? With how often these guys travel you're driving some of them what, once every 2 years?

 

What is the point of 10 sets of irons and 35 putters?

 

Well...the difference could be (since I have more than 10 sets of clubs) that I'll get to use each of those sets multiple times a season. Think his original point is that most of those cars won't get driven much at all (if any) in a given year since their jobs as a golf pro involves a lot of travel and very little time to be at home (and available to be driving those beautiful cars).

 

It's their money though...and they can spend it however they want...even if the cars just sit there...in a garage....begging to be taken out on the road...

Weird how often debates on WRX are basically trying to figure out how often you can apply a stereotype? Who cares? You can apply it all the time, but every time you're wrong, you're 100% wrong.

 

Only guy I've ever know that owned any real exotic cars was a race car driver. His dad had him driving competitively since early childhood. He never "made it" but I'm pretty sure he can drive. He also doesn't have to work. So, if you saw him as a young yuppie driving a special car and assumed he's not a car guy, you'd be 100% wrong.

 

I can't afford fancy cars, but every time I see one I'm grateful for guys and gals who prioritize doing business with a specialty car manufacturer. The world would be a pretty boring place if we all had to decide between a Camry, Accord, or Mazda6.

 

Guys see me drive up to the golf course and assume looking at my ride that I'm not a car guy. Wrong. I've ripped old FJ40's down to their frames and kept a VW Westy on the road for 20 years doing 90% of the work myself. It's just not in the cards for me at the moment. Such is life.

 

If I had two majors under my belt and a huge contract with a sporting clothing company I'd be tuned in to the Michael Fux sell off coming up. That'd be a fun day to shop. I'd also rent track time, but to each their own.

 

Have you ever been to Jon Shirley’s (believe that’s is name) open house or museum day? He lives in Seattle and is said to have the most extensive Ferrari collection in the world including several running f1 cars, one of which was Michael Schumachers. He opens his garage up once a year for people to just come look.

 

The racing driver point is a great one. Michael Schumacher used to drive a Fiat 500. A very good friend races GT3 stuff and he drives a Golf, and he could drive whatever he wants.

 

I’ve asked him a couple of times why he doesn’t drive faster stuff, and he says that there is no way that you can drive any road car even close to the limit without getting banned, and if you can’t drive flat out then it’s simply not fun for a racer who spends their life pushing cars to the limit. That gets even more the case when you have a supercar, because even on an empty road you can’t get close to the limit.

 

They simply don’t see the joy in driving at road speeds, as they are able to push so much harder when they’re racing. Even my granny can drive flat out in a straight line, but it’s cornering that separates good drivers from bad. The top guys can go so much faster than us, that they can’t get close to their limit on the road, so they don’t try!

 

That’s what go-karts did for me. I used to be a big car guy (but couldn’t afford too much) and after racing karts and getting into auto crossing for awhile cars just became transportation.

In my thirties I met and made friends with a guy in his late-fifties that had raced sport motorcycles his entire life making a career of it. He was running a repair and retail motorcycle shop and we talked bikes quite a bit as I was riding some enduro at that time. He basically explained how they looked at a race, from the preparation of walking the track and hand picking up debris to his feelings about having accidents and crashing. It made a lot of sense to be from a sporting perspective. It's not that inaccessible to drive on closed courses if you're a motorsports enthusiast. I 100% understand why guys and girls with that kind of training don't drive anything fun for a daily driver. Driving around town is much more dangerous in a lot of ways than driving on a track. And most importantly you put other people into the mix. Not fair to them and not fair to you. Getting from A to B is one thing, having fun in a car is different. Just about any car or bike is fun to put through a little S curve without taking too much risk, but much more than that is reckless and unfair to those around you.

 

I think it would be a fun hobby, but I can also see a pro golfer not wanting to risk even the smallest injury. Probably smart to focus on golf until you can't make a living anymore from it and then have all the fun you want.

Yeah, if I had the $ and was a car nut tour player I would either rent a track out or go to track days. That is one huge thing I learned out there was on a track there is acceptable risk on the road, not so much.

 

Plus taking a hairpin at 60 mph with nothing around you and 2” off the ground really tells you where your man parts hang. I could run with a lot of guys but not race. Just a different mind set.

My ex-neighbor is an exotic car dealer. Every week he'd bring home a different Lambo, Ferrari, Porsche, Bentley, etc. Over the years I've had the chance to drive a bunch of different makes and models including all of the above plus most of the top-end performance MBs, BMWs, Maserati, a Lotus, a tricked-out Hummer, and a McLaren.

 

All were very cool, the Lotus being the most fun to actually drive. In the end though, they're really just a novelty unless you take 'em to a track and do some racing. I'm not the kind of person that appreciates the "hey, look at me" factor that many of these exotic rides elicit.

 

Personally, I'm happy to have had the experience but also grateful because it has really erased all desire and aspiration to actually own one.

My ex-neighbor is an exotic car dealer. I used to love listening to my Harley Roadking Classic while cleaning out the garage.

This past Dell Match Play in Austin, Spieth drove his personal black Range Rover and Patrick Reed drove his personal lifted black Jeep Wrangler. Everyone else was driving the loaner Escallades. Jimmy Walker drives a black Porsche GT2 RS but didn't drive it to the course.

 

I'm noticing a trend. A lot of black cars.

I disagree about having a nice little sports car to tool around town not being any fun. Not true at all

 

You don't need to track your car to make them enjoyable

A couple of years ago i was playing in a scramble here in the Nashville area. As i walked to the range i crossed paths with Sneds as he got in his very old pick-up.

 

He can afford to fix it when it breaks.

 

There's a rather large group of car enthusiasts all over the world that have an old car/truck look but everything else under the old looking body is newer than most of the cars people own on this forum.

Yes he does, it was built for someone else though i cannot remember who, and he ended up with it. He talked about it on "Comedians in Cars" with Seinfeld.

 

It's actually a wagon too which makes it even better, and he still has it as of recently.

 

I love stuff like that, i'm a moderate car guy at best meaning i have a hard time spending on cars, though i do enjoy them, i've been in some doozies. But if i had unlimited cash i'd rather do something weird like that. I bought my wife a Buick Encore, and part of me thinks it would be a bada** rally car if i lowered it a bit and put another engine in there. It's great in the snow already. So if you ever see someone in like a 350hp lowered Encore with gold rally rims, you know i have won the lottery
