Bethpage Black is likely to be very very very wet come the PGA. Does the Tour have any alternative venue sites if the course and the forecast appear to be not ready for the championship?

The PGA Tour has nothing to do with where the PGA Championship is played. The PGA of America does. The last US Open at Bethpage in June of '09 was soaked with 5 days of rain and they still managed to finish it on Monday.

Unless the course blew up or was washed out in a hurricane, it will be played there.

There was a PGA Tour event that was cancelled because of flooding.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

Does the Tour have any alternative venue sites if the course and the forecast appear to be not ready for the championship? I am thinking about more than the course conditions.. I can imagine spectators walking through mud-trails and players complaining about the conditions. Its as if they all grew up playing PERFECT weather 363 days a year... Not that a little rain could hurt but the tour is really soft when it comes to anything that involves a sprinkle of rain.

Opinions or any news on "what if" scenarios? I have read several articles on the poor conditions of Bethpage leading up to these championship dates.

Doesn't know PGA of America runs it, seemingly ignorant of the 2009 U.S. Open (as ably pointed out already), "tour is really soft" about rain, lol, players all grew up playing in perfect weather (beyond ridiculous).

The winter time "what silly things can I post about tournaments months away" run has begun.

I know, the "tour" should move the PGA Championship to Dubai to "grow the game" and get some nice, dry weather.

I've never seen somebody take more shots and miss. Nothing in your post is rooted in any reality.

I see on PGA.com the future venues/dates for the championship are mapped out all the way to May 2031, I guess they are 100% convinced the May date works - contracts signed.

I'm tellin' ya. There's nothing like reacting to a compliant that hasn't even happened yet.

We all should try it sometime. I bet it's very liberating.

The PGA Championship starts in 164 days. If your forecasting ability goes that far out, you could make a fortune revolutionizing the weather and climate industries.

I'm sure some locals can provide better info, but I think the Black drains just fine. I went up earlier this year and the entire place was closed on Friday because of weather. That night there were gigantic lakes of water pooled on Red #1 and Green #1 (which are on either side of Black #18 and #1), but none on the Black. By Saturday morning when we teed off, they had pumped the lakes out and the entire Black was in great shape. No standing water anywhere. We had a lot of mud balls, but the ball rolled okay, nothing was mushy, and no balls plugged. It was perfectly playable for normal people, and the worst they would have had to do to stop pros from whining was put in place LCP in the fairway.

Lift Clean Cheat! (kidding)

And it will be interesting to see how it plays under the upcoming rule changes. But by then there will have been several regular stops too, so that will be interesting.

Why is Bethpage Black "likely to be very, very, very wet come the PGA"? Is May the rainy season on Long Island? I was not aware of that. And I grew up on Long Island.

Lol, ya, I'm not from LI but grew up not far at all and, while it tends to rain a bit in April and May, it's not like things are soaked for months.

People out her thinkin LI be like,

My only comments are that they often can't get the weather correct the day before .... and that I dislike the same course doing US Opens and PGA's .....

May is perfectly fine. No issues with that date. No difference in rain compared to June and August. Temperatures will be equal to a good Masters week. Course will drain just perfectly. The fescue thickness could be thick or thin depending on the winter. When I last played it a few months back it was very sparse. Will still tangle the hell out of clubs. I liked how it was because a ball could end up playable or it could work out where you have a half decent chance. The second cut, forget it. If pros miss the fairway, they're absolute toast. Even if you can see their ball, they're in trouble.

I say bring on the rain ! I know a certain young master looking for the grand slam who dominated a soggy Eastlake one year. Could be perfect conditions.

Dear OP,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We had not previously considered any implications of moving our flagship annual event to earlier in the season. With fore-thinking like yours and help from industry a top-tier expert we just found - he goes by "The Club Pro Guy" and his recommended greenskeeper - I am sure we will finally host a successful tournament.

Sincerely,

PGA of America
