PGA of America moving to Frisco (Dallas)

Recommended Posts

Evidently it's been in the works for quite some time but this is the first I heard of it. This would be a huge boost to golf in the Dallas area.

-----------------------------

PGA of America officials have been in discussions with officials and business leaders in the Dallas suburb since mid-2017, with talks becoming more serious earlier this year. However, the association was also weighing other options, including remaining in Florida, where its headquarters have located since 1965.

The deal in Texas is expected to include a 100,000 square-foot headquarters, two 18-hole championship-caliber courses and a nine-hole practice course, along with a new resort. Additionally, multiple PGA of America-hosted championships are also expected to be played in Frisco, including two PGA Championships. The vote is scheduled for Tuesday, according to the Dallas paper.

As long as they keep the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando I’m fine with it. I need my yearly winter getaway to Florida when Cincinnati gets too cold. The PGA show is the perfect time for that.

Just because of money or there is comething else?

Don't know. The article doesn't say. But likely lower costs and access to a major airport.

It sounds like a very big package

The original "deal" between the PGA of America, and Ecclestone, the developer of the PGA National Resort - and the many other aspects all related to the original deal - never really seemed to be all that solid, with a great deal of friction coming between the 2 at times.

Even the acquisition of the PGA courses in Port St Lucie, FL were so tied into the original deal.

Of course, this original deal was way back when "nobody was ever going to live and/or play golf west of the Florida Turnpike" and the PGA was becoming a real "for profit" business entity, placing more emphasis on making money for the business entity (as well as great perks for national officers, etc)....

Hopefully, any new deals will be more favorable, in terms of benefits, to PGA members....but, I won't be holding my breath.

I genuinely associated the PGA more with Valhalla than I do Florida in any event.

Just because of money or there is comething else?

Setting aside the other things, a friend of mine told me that the WPB headquarters are too small for the current organization's size. Not to mention the fact the apprentices go to Port St Lucie for their classes.

Having said that, I agree with every single post about how this is likely more driven by the $$$ and perks for the national officers, etc., and is certainly not about the members.

How is that any different from any other business? Do you think Tim Cook makes decisions because they benefit him or because they benefit the factory workers building Apple phones?

If I remember correctly the Learning Center (the apprentices utilize the Education Center building on this piece of land) has already been placed up for sale. It is a far more valuable piece of property for condos or housing than a practice and education facility. I'm sure the town of PSL is drooling over the potential tax revenue.

Education can be done almost anywhere. Dallas would be far more centralized for transportation rather than West Palm Beach airport (45 minutes from the Education Center in PSL-requiring bus transportation to and from) with it's limited non stop offerings. Coming from CO three times we always had to connect either thru Atlanta or Dallas.

The old, single course PGA Country Club located across I-95 from the PGA Golf Club which has three excellent courses has already been divested. The PGA has indicated they are committed to the PGA Golf Club. OK.

I will feel very sorry for the staff members in both Port St. Lucie and Palm Beach Gardens being placed in the difficult position of potentially uprooting their families even if the PGA offers them relocation packages. Been there done that with my corporate life and dealing with closing facilities a number of times.

The rent at their FLA headquarters was astronomical...

I won't say 100% - but I'm pretty sure that the PGA owned their Palm Beach Gardens facility. They used to rent BITD - like pre-1980 - off US 1 in Lake Park, FL, just a few miles from their current facility.

What remains unclear is when the move would occur if the deal is approved, and whether the PGA of America will maintain a satellite office in Florida. A source said this was still to be determined as of the Annual Meeting. The PGA of America owns its current main headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens, which could be a possible location. The PGA of America also occupies a second building near the headquarters that it rents for what sources say is $1 million annually.

What will happen to the 3 courses at the PGA Village at Port Saint Lucie ?

That is an interesting question. The PGA has invested a lot remodeling the clubhouse and having a top flight super really improve the condition of the courses. And they have told the membership they are committed to maintaining the investment/operation from what I've heard.

Conversely it is not in a great location for destination golf given the FL competition. It has a definite seasonal volume variation.

So who knows, only the PGA leadership.

After 2025, Frisco might become the permanent site of the PGA Championship.

Doesn't seem like it.

https://www.golfdige...ships-ryder-cup

As outlined in the initial reports, the new headquarters will have two championship courses. Under the PGA of America's agreement with the Frisco City Council, the PGA will bring two PGA Championships, two KPMG Women’s PGA Championships and, potentially, a Ryder Cup to the site. The golf course is expected to open in the summer of 2022.

They publicly announced it this morning on the radio including the incentives and plans... looks to be a very interesting venture for us here in North Texas.

You'd have a point if the only way to make a career out of being a factory worker building Apple phones was to pay Tim Cook for the pleasure of being certified to be a factory worker building Apple phones, and if the factory workers building Apple phones could vote on replacing or retaining Tim Cook as they see fit.

As for the move, meh, so it goes. One, money talks. Two, the old guard that put the PGA Tour in FL in the first place is dying off and/or retiring. This is a generational change. They'll move again 40 years from now when they get bored of Texas and some other locality opens up the checkbook.

Tim Cook is responsible to shareholders of apple, to maximize the value of their shares. Apple pays taxes, and the factory workers are compensated for their work in the chain.

So I can see how that is totally analagous. Except it's not.
