Player iron recommendations wanted

Recommended Posts

I bagged the 718 cb irons this season. They felt good but want a little higher flight from the heads. I like the consistent distances these give me and turf interaction. I realize shaft also plays a roll but any recommendations to try for 2019.

Really enjoy the consistency of the i200s.

Messed around with a few shaft combos but keep coming back to them.

Also found a second hand set of MP53s. Feel is amazing.

Hit some really tight approaches with them.

Easily a half club to a club shorter than i200s and I may not have enough game for the 4 iron.

But, ya know, mizuno butter feels.

AP2's or Mizzy 919 Forged would probably be as good as anything. Feel like they are step up vs a regular CB like the Titleist.

Going for a softer/lighter shaft would also help accomplish this if you're open to changing that.

If you're open to trying a heavier set, you could also think about adding some tape to the lower half of your clubs to help just lower the CoG slightly.

The Srixon Z785's are really impressive. If I didn't already have the 718 AP2's they'd be in the bag. Either them or the MP18SC's are the best feeling irons I've hit this year.

Unless you really must play all the same irons, what about keeping your CB's in the bag for 7 or 8 through PW and just adding in AP2's in the longer irons?

I wanted to like the AP2’s but could never get along with them. I’ve tried every set. I played dg s300 in the cbs. I’m open to suggestions on shafts. I looked at the Mizzy line and was drooling over the mp 18 mb in a combo set with the mc. I haven’t hit them but i doubt its the best option for what I’m looking for.

I will say I am loving the feel of dg s400 in my new rtx 4 raw wedges

Callaway X Forged 2018 - heads are single piece forged. Consistency, accuracy and feel are as good as any blade. Best part is you get a little forgiveness. My recommendation is valid. I am scratch/competitive local/state am player plus I have tested the below irons in the last few seasons.

PING S55, Callaway APEX MBs 2014, Callaway APEX, Titleist 690mbs, Titleist 712 CBs, Titleist 716 AP2, TM RAC MBs, TM MCs 2014, TM RSi2s, Mizuno MP 18 MBs, PXG 0311Ts and then I finally found these end of this past summer. I played the S55s for four years so I am hoping I finally found some keepers.

I’ve hit these tanker. I only hit with stock project x shaft but they spun too much for me.

It may help to say my previous sets of irons:

Can certainly verify Tankers assessment

of the X Forged. They are a blast to play.

TM MCs 2014 KBS C-taper stiff

Bridgestone J15 Steelfiber 110

Titleist 718 cb Dg S300

Long story short. I forgot to mention I bought the X Forged irons twice this year. I got them with PX the first go around. Never swung PX. I heard they were harsh but what the hell. I have played DG s300/x100 my entire life and gave it a shot. I loved them but the PX took hours on the range to load and sync with my smooth tempo. Eventually caused some tendinitis in my left arm so I dropped them. I then picked up PXG 0311T through the PXG Heros program - got Gen1s for super cheap. But they were horrific. They performed like a set of old Top Flights. So after a long conversation with my priest I realized I had the best ball striking with the X Forged even thou it was a bad shaft combo. So I bought my second set of X Forged but this time with KBS Tour 120S.

Only other option I can recommend that I have swung would be the P760. I hit them and they were pretty promising. Just about everything else out there isn't any better than a set of TM MC 2014s. Good luck.

I wish I would have tried the Callaway X forged with a different shaft. The $ taper would be high on my list. I’m like you were the project x are too soft in the middle. It’s hilarious you bought them twice. I thought I’m the only ho that has done this :)

Pretty cool to see how Phil has his combo set in the bag; MB 8-PW, X-forged 5-7, epic pro 4, x-forged UT 3

He has had this setup for awhile. I know he likes to tinker and he's up on the latest tech and what works best..

S400 is a great wedge shaft.

S300's are pretty standard stiff shafts but are on the heavier side at 130g for the standard version. The other manufacturers (PX/Nippon/KBS) all have their stiff shafts are 120g which should allow you to hit it a bit higher (well maybe not in PX case).

That’s correct. Unless they’ve changed it since I purchased my set. You can configure them on callaways website and purchase whatever combo you like. Bunch of grip options as well.
