Anyone Care About Web.com Q School?

It's clearly not the contest it once was, but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Q School.

Living in East-Central Alabama, I was able to watch Pre-Qualifying and First and Second Stages a number of years in a row. Always interesting.

So, anyone else following the action? Anyone know anybody in the field?

As an Auburn alum, I will be pulling for Blayne Barber. War Eagle!

Hoping Zac Blair does well. Seems like a likeable guy and has the game to play on the PGA tour.

Yes, he clearly does! I assume he was exempt into the finals.

I know Blayne Barber played in the Second Stage, but it is always so hard to track players through the stages. I wish they made that easier.

The name Blayne Barber almost feels like a blast from the past, didn't really seem to hear his name much at all after the news about his caddie at the start of the year.

Seems like a nice guy, hopefully he can put in a good showing.

Looks like they're showing 135 players, playing 72 holes of stroke play from Thursday the 6th of December through Sunday the 9th. Tournament will be held at Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, Arizona.

Like I wrote earlier, our town will be following Dylan Wu's progress closely. As a Bulldog I'm interested in Lee McCoy's play as a human not so much. After watching his impressive match in the U.S. Amateur finals against Doc Redman I'd like to see Doug Ghim play well. I like Zac Blair. Getting his card back would probably help his dream of The Buck Club getting built.

Anyone from Phoenix and familiar with the track? Looks to be part of a Sheraton resort. Well received by the general public, with 4.4 stars on Google.

I'm guessing the tournament is on the Devil's Claw which is Gary Panks designed and comes in with a 72.7 CR and slope of 127 from the tips. That seems low for this caliber of play. Should we expect these kids to be licking their chops and go low. I guess that's the Web.com way. Ironic, the Cattail Course is rated harder.

Not sure which course they are playing but neither is difficult. Like most web.com events low scores will be required.

This thread got me thinking of my evolution of folllowing Q School.

Mid to late 90’s: what scores are they posting and can I do that?

Early 2000’s: Nice to see player x, player y, whoever make it through, he was good in junior and college golf.

2010ish: huh, not seeing any names I recognize anymore except tour players trying to get their card back

Today: wow, that’s the CHILD of insert club pro or wannabe tour player that I knew in the late 90’s.

I’m old, and can’t play a lick anymore. Apparently neither can any of my old fellow competitors but their kids sure can.

That's pretty accurate to my experience, although I can still play about half a lick...

Q School certainly used to mean more. Maybe the field has been diminished because of the changes made a few years back?

Outside of sponsor exemptions and Monday qualifying, are people finding other roads to the tour?

Other than what you mentioned, Web.com is the only path to the pga tour now. I guess some guys are going Euro tour and trying to get enough world ranking points to get into events and earning tour cards that way, but if they are good enough to do that they wouldn’t have any issue with a season on web.com resulting in a tour card.

I do miss Q School for tour cards, it was awesome to watch and follow.

Man, I don't know how I overlooked Vogel in the field. He came all the way through from the First Stage. Hard not to respect a guy who Monday qualifies seven times in the same season!

War Eagle!

Zack Fischer is a Slicefixer student

Sam Love is student of my current instructor, Robert Merrill , Sam is -35 for stage 1 and 2, not that it matters for the final qualifying stage, but good luck to both.

I guess I could look on the web for the field and find out, but I’ll just ask: are you in the field?

Negative. I got to second stage so easily last year in my first attempt I think I had a false sense of just how hard it really is. I thought I should get through 1st always. Reality is that’s not the case. A lot of good players don’t get through 1st every year

Nice! Wishing them the best of success. I've personally benefited from Slicefixer's writings - that 9-3 drill is a life changer!

I don't think many people appreciate how many rounds you have to play to go all the way through.

When the Pre-Qualifiers were local to me, I used to go watch and then see how many guys made it all the way through to the finals.

It was usually like one or two, maybe, every year.

Did Matt Hansen go far in the qualifying?
