Winter Golf Withdrawal Symptoms

Recommended Posts

I am having a hard time with the weather being very cold, and not being able to play golf. The idea of waiting for warm weather is driving me nuts. Snow is on the forecast and that does not help at all. I guess I can read about golf swing improvements, but is that like throwing logs into the fire? I can only clean and resort my clubs so many times. I need support!

Bag is in overhaul mode

I was literally just thinking this while driving home. I was sitting at a red light debating trying the new cobra irons and i swear my hands started twitching. Thought i might ask the guys on here the same question. So i put it off and took the dog for a walk. Mid walk i realized i had found a 5' stick and was practicing my driver swing right there on the sidewalk next to a fairly busy road. Im sure the people driving by were thinking "man that guy has some issues!" Indoor golf is cool and so is playing with LM but its just not the same.

My brother in law drafted me to be to be his partner in his indoor golf league. It should help keep me sharp over the winter.

Since we shut down for the winter I have:

- Bought three new shafts for driver testing.

- Ordered a new 4W for Christmas

- Taken apart my irons and re-swingweighted them

- Measured and adjusted the lofts on my irons

On a plus side, I'm going to a golf simulator twice a week.

I finally set up a little practice facility in my basement. I got a net and 4' x 16' higher end putting green. I can really only swing 8 irons in the net. We have these stupid floor joists running across the ceiling that need to be removed to give me another foot of clearance. I figure I can take a joist out. Worst case scenario I can't sell my house someday for being out of code or the wood floors above get a squeeky spot. Besides that I found a local range with heated bay.

Good grief, don't remove the floor joists! If you have a garage use part of that. If it's unheated, use a portable heater.

While it is frustrating not playing there is an upside at my age. Rest will help all the little golf injuries incurred over the past 6 months. Left hip sore, left hand hurts with most swings, back is tired. Repetitive motion injuries that hopefully will improve with a few months off.

A small break and some rest are good when you run 100+ rounds a year. We indoor golf every other Saturday morning, and I have a yearly trip to Palm Dessert in early February.

That and buying crap I don't need get me by.

I went out to the range last week after some heavy frost. No one there, but that’s not out of the ordinary for a winter weekday morning. Put my money in the ball machine, which feebly clunked and.. no balls. Walked across the deserted range and filled up a bucket, knocking as much ice off the balls as I could. Came back and cleared the frost off the matt. Did my range session, and only as I was leaving did I notice the “Closed for Season” sign on a rope over the parking lot gate. (I had walked in from the other way)

When I lived in Chicago, winters (some courses stayed open all year, playing on frozen ground is an experience) were head to one of the several simulator places where we'd play on those.

Best solution is to move somewhere where it's possible to play golf year round, or mostly year round.

If it's only temperature then put more clothes on (probably find I'm talking to someone who lives above the Arctic circle now). As long as I'm dry and can see the grass I'm usually fine in any weather. And wouldn't snow just be a great way to check your swing path?

:D

Idiots from Florida chiming in, in 3....2.....1.....

California says "hello" too!

Here is a chime from Arizona. Only in the 60's all week. Brrrrrrr!

I watch YT vlogs of guys in UK playing when it's in the 30's (F), rain, sleet, snow, 5 layers of clothes and playing some pretty good golf. Get's in the 40's and I can't swing, ball goes nowhere, feels like a rock. I don't know how they do it. I don't mind the cold (I was a ski bum for 6 years), I just can't play (well) in those conditions.

Forgot the important one - trip to Phoenix end of January, get 2-3 rounds in while I'm there.

As an architect please don't remove the floor joists. I also have a lower height basement that I practice in but just adjust to half swings, etc. but it can be annoying.. Outdoor heated ranges are the only option unless you can find a course that stays open through the winter months. Thankfully I have both somewhat near me, but it's still not the same. Keeps you from going a little nuts without golf though.
