Golf popularity is directly correlated to how good one is at golf. Plain and simple. Can we stop the threads by folks who can't figure out golf...or who tried it and about killed their boss with a shanked PW?

 

Golf is life. Unpredictable...frustrating...mind boggling...which is why folks play the game.

I totally agree! You don't want to be a bad swimmer and jump into the ocean. That struggle is real!

What makes golf so attractive is that it's the one thing you can do in life where you're allowed

to be delusional. Everyone has an imaginary game and reality doesn't change that.

Yeah not sure i agree..... i think what makes golf great is bad players can enjoy themselves. I have seen it happen many times having observed these unsightly players through a powerful telescope. I mean they could even play together in the same group, should the better players be up for a laugh or wish to work on their ironic compliments

 

Having played in men's flag football leagues and basketball leagues. It is REALLY hard to have functional games in these sports when the talent levels are different. Racket sports like Tennis are downright brutal too

 

The only similar popular sport i can think of is softball, which anyone can play and it can still be fun. I think that's why so many companies have softball leagues

Toss in stroke play, match play and all the assorted 2,3 and 4 man formats and you have a wicked hobby

Yeah, I gotta disagree OP. I play with bad, good and great golfers of all ages and the tie that binds is that we all love it. Watching a 20 cap celebrate a solid shot or a par is just as enjoyable as seeing a single digit drop a long birdie putt or stick a 6 iron tight.

Absolutely Bill. The one perfect golf shot resonates. When all the stars align. The swing is grooved, the soft feel of golf ball and club face, and you nut one. Exactly as you intended. And you say to yourself...."Oh Yeah. Thats how you do it." But it's a fleeting moment (for us regular hacks). Nevertheless, the remembrance of said shot, the belief that it will occur again, is part of the attraction for playing at golf I don't exactly remember good scores. But I sure do remember perfect shots.

 

Despite how inept one plays today, the belief is always tomorrow is going to be the day when it all comes together. Still trying to "figure it out".

Golf is about having fun and there are plenty of people I know that enjoy just being out and realize they so t get any better because they do t care to practice. They like being in the course, hanging with friends and being able to play a sport they can continue to play as they get older.

Additionally, the fact that one can play by himself. The flexibility of playing nine if you don't have time for eighteen. If you don't have time for nine, "playing the course" at the range, sequencing driver, long iron, wedge. Then there's the practice greens for putting . . . which is practically a game in itself.

 

That's what I love about golf.
