Trick question re: Kapalua

Recommended Posts

Here it is ... I'll be in Kapalua later next week and the following week. I'll only have time to play once, likely on Monday, the 17th.

I played Plantation about 15 years ago and loved it. I'd like to play it again on the 17th. Normally this would be a no-brainer, but ... it will be cart paths only as they prep for the Sentry. I HATE cart paths only, especially on courses with a lot of elevation change.

So ... given the choice, would you suggest playing the Bay Course, instead, or just bite the bullet and deal with cart path only at Plantation? FWIW, I've read that the Bay Course is also a fun one.

Putter - depends on the day, but I own way more than I should. Kind of compulsive. 50+ putters in the collection.

I haven't even played the Bay course and I hate cart path only but I have played Kapalua a few times and I would still pick it over the Bay. Its just an awesome feeling playing up there.

Yes this is how I'm leaning. I played PGA West Stadium last month, cart path only, and am glad I did. At a minimum I have booked my tee time for Plantation.

Plantation and it really isn't even remotely close.

As I figured. Haven't played Bay so nothing to which to compare.

The Bay Course is fun, and has some beautiful holes along the ocean. The pros used to play the Bay Course regularly, and its a good challenge, but its nothing like the Plantation. If you want to avoid the cart-path-only stuff, and you like playing new courses, play the Bay, you'll have fun. If you want the best course you can find, and don't mind walking across 80-yard wide fairways, play the Plantation.

I'd rank the Bay course as somewhere between good and very good. But not exceptional. A few really good and fun holes, especially those along the water as noted above...but also a couple that were a bit more forgettable.

If you've played Plantation you no doubt have a few holes that still get you excited thinking about playing again (#8 for me!) I understand it's not everyone's favorite course, so if you liked it the first time I'd say play there again.

Cart path only will certainly make for a longer round and more tiring day, but I'm pretty sure that's still what I would do.

I’ve played both many times. I’ve got a bad hip so it wouldn’t be a choice for me.

I’d never play a course cart path only unless it was a once in a lifetime event or just a spectacular tract.

....and for that matter I don’t really love the plantation. It’s more weird than great. Views are obviously great but the course is not my favorite.

Up hill, down hill, side hill, billy goat golf. Not really my thing.
